Though they shared the same methodology, pure scientists had a particular way of interpreting the world around them that was just different than a physician or counsellor like herself. Many defaulted to observable external things, even if a situation required a more internal response. It wasn’t bad, it was just different, but it could make digging deeper harder at times. Fortunately for Sair, she wasn’t one to get hung up on details and so was happy to go where this conversation led them.

“So, I like to think of myself as a partner in crime, so to speak for people. I’m here to be a sounding board, test ideas out with and if needed, challenge your own preconceptions of even yourself. I say that up front because I want you to know that anytime you need that, I’m here. People take that for granted I think, but I do mean it.”

Shedda nodded with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “I appreciate that. I do apologize for seeming so…concrete I guess. Not all decisions are so cut and dry, but the process is similar. Or so I have found so far in regards to command decisions.”

She was silent a moment considering Sair’s words. Then she sat forward, elbows on knees, “I am feeling very impatient and anxious. Not about my new position or the ship. I am, so far, very excited about it and thrilled for the opportunity. But personally I am waiting on information, on news that can’t come soon enough.”

“Tell me more,” Sair said simply. She was never one to turn away proffered information, especially since it sowed that someone wanted to talk about something. The less digging on her part, the better.

“I grew up on this little boarder colony world, Delotha. There is a village there, Caspian, that my father and I lived near. I guess you could say that we are a part of the village, even though we lived beyond the far edges. Caspian is actually well known in the alpha quadrant because of its orphanage. We all help out, volunteer in any way needed. We all, the children there included, a large family.” Shedda’s gaze turned distant with a small smile across her face, “There is a little girl there, Mavva, she’s just a baby really. I’m trying to adopt her. I am waiting to hear from the judge about my security check. Because of who my mother is they are doing my background and security checks again. If they find anything they don’t like, they can put a complete halt to the adoption. And when I left to come here, Mavva was sick. Just a cold that was going around. The medic in the village wasn’t concerned, but she’s so little.”

“Based on what you know so far, do you think the adoption will go through?” Sair asked. Becoming a parent was a monumental process, but adoption could be even more fraught with stress because of how complicated it could sometimes be.
