“Everything here is copacetic,” Faye said with a nod. “And you’re welcome to drop by anytime. I’m on the bridge more often because my bridge training but otherwise I’m here and it does get a bit lonely. Though at least the computers keep to themselves just ho much I talk to them,” she said with a grin.

Shedda nodded, she could see how working on such a project alone, although necessary, could be too quiet and lonely at times. “Thank you Cmdr. I look forward to it. Just send along the day and time and I’ll be here.” Shedda stood up and offered her hand to Calloway again. “Thank you for your time, Cmdr. really. Your work is quite impressive.” As much as Shedda would love to stay and learn more about the system and the virus and what Faye was doing, she did have other appointments that day and it wouldn’t do to be late.

Faye shook her hand. “Hey, you’re just lucky you came now. Six months ago I would have shot you in the ready room,” she said with a wink. She’d explain now if she had to, or else she was sure the new XO could ask the right people about that particular incident.

Shedda paused assessing if Calloway was serious or joking and settled on the former. “I’ll keep that in mind. Of course six months ago it may have been justified.”

Faye threw her head back and laughed. “Oh trust me it was. And the Captain was the one who handed me the phaser,” she said. “If he doesn’t tell you that story in the next bit as you settle in, come back and I’ll tell you. It’s, uh… something else,” she said, chuckling some more.

An intrigued and curious expression crossed her face. “I look forward to hearing it, from both of you.” The same story told from separate points of view. The anthropologist in Shedda was thrilled at the idea. “Thank you for your time, Cmdr.” The small PaDD she was carrying beeped to remind her she had another appointment. And her time might be valuable, but to Shedda her officers’ time was more so. She might help coordinate but they were the ones that did the significant work and she wouldn’t play wasteful with their time. “I look forward to watching your test.” And then with a nod she was out the door.

“Later,” Faye said with a wave of her hand as she swivelled back to her screen and resumed her work. She supposed she should get used to explaining her work to new people because she’d be doing an awful lot of it in the near future. But that wasn’t now and right now she needed to focus on making sure all the tiny details of her system were in good order before she turned it over to others. The very thought of it turned her stomach, but she also knew that it was a necessary process. She would have to learn to let go.
