“As noble and important as the medical field is, my passion has always been with research,” Kiama replied and gave a small shrug. “And-” she hesitated a little and tilted her head to the side as she pondered how to continue. Finally she said, “I come from a family of very strong telepaths and empaths. I don’t know how much you know about the battle of Betazed during the Dominion War, but both my mother and grandmother were among those who fought against and defeated the Jem’Hadar with their abilities. Mine are as strong as theirs and while I have my mental shields up at all times, there are things that are just harder to block. Like people being in pain. And I’m not sure how good of a physician I would be and if I might not get overwhelmed at times and unable the think and act as fast as I’d need to.” There was a flicker of nervousness, maybe even fear in her eyes as she admitted that. After all, it might be a problem in her current position as well.

Shedda considered the woman in front of her. It took a strong willed person to admit such a thing. “I am familiar with the events.” From an historical point of view what the Betazoid people had done was massively significant and she had heard that it had affected them culturally as well. It was to be expected of any society, especially one that were so ardently pacifist, that such choices would prompt a deep questioning. Shedda admired them as a whole and the individuals she had met over the years. She couldn’t begin to imagine what it was like for them. She did catch Naim’s nervousness, and Shedda leaned back in her chair relaxed as she nodded. “I can only imagine it would be difficult. Everyone has moments, Naim, that they wonder if they will act fast enough, come to the right conclusions, see the larger picture and minute details at the same time. All we can do is do our best in each moment, the rest will fall into place.”

“Now tell me, what is your own current project? Do you have time to pursue them? It would be shame for you to have access to all the facilities here, and not have the time to do so.”

“Not as much as I would like, but I make sure I have some time every week to work on it. I had planned to really put some work into it while we were at Event Horizon, but then my mother showed up unexpectedly and things got … complicated,” Kiama replied and then pressed her lips together for a brief moment as she took a deep breath. “So the project I’m working on is actually in part to help a friend of mine. She is anthropologist and currently on a pre-warp world to learn more about the people there. They are telepathic and empathic and in many ways in a very similar way to Betazoids. She is sending me all the data they are collecting that might help us get a better understanding. Like brain scans. Genetic makeup. You name it.” And just like that any hint of nervousness and anger were completely gone. Instead her face was lit up with a wide smile and her black eyes glittered with excitement. “They can’t get scans as thorough as I’d like, but what I have is absolutely intriguing. And right down my ally. Comparing brain activity from different telepathic and empathic species has been my main focus while I was the topic of my PhD and my main focus while I worked for the university. So what I found so far…” And off she went going into details about everything she had learned so far and all the questions she still had. That is, if Shedda didn’t interrupt her at some point.
