Bags packed and hotel key cards returned, Faye’s bag felt heavy on her shoulder as she walked him to where he’d catch a transport that would take him back to the Alpha Quadrant. Right hand firmly entrenched in his left, Faye was twisted the stunning ring sitting on her left hand with her thumb. Round and round, the weight of it was soothing, even if the action was one of anxiousness.

It wasn’t enough. She felt certain he felt it too. One week was not enough, even with the pledge of a future together. One with a wedding and possibly kids. A future. Their future. The Manhattan was the place that had cradled her gently when she wasn’t sure how to tackle this new adventure in making the most of this thing called Living. And as she fell and got back up over and over, she realized that the ship hadn’t made her but it had allowed the woman who walked along Event Horizon’s busy docking port deck, was there because the variables on her ship had allowed it all to coalesce together into a beautiful package. And Dag was a part of that. The image of her life wasn’t complete without him, and now she was letting him go back where he needed to be. But it felt wrong.

It was necessary. Faye knew that and as they came closer to his check-in, she tightened her grip on his hand, expressing things words could not.

=/\= Shuttle Tyson boarding in five minutes. =/\= came the announcement over the comms, and Daggum’s heart caught in his chest. His grip mirrored her own, tightening as if he was trying to hang onto her… which he was. They stopped in the line of the few people heading to his flight, and he turned to face her; taking her in his arms and pulling her close to him.

Faye inhaled the scent of him, trying her best to let her incredible memory imprint it forever. Her fingers caressed his arms, fabric bunching over his muscles.

“I love you so much, Faye. And I will be counting the days until I get to see you…” he said softly, a single gold tear falling from his eye and sliding down his emerald cheek. He chuckled slightly and said “Hard to imagine the next time I hold you will be just before our wedding.” and he squeezed her to him.

Throwing everything in her embrace, Faye buried her head against his chest, seeking shelter from the moment of impending separation. When she allowed herself to look up, she reached up and brushed her fingers across his cheek, taking the tear with them

“It can’t come soon enough,” she said and surprised herself with just how much she meant it. Why did the idea seem to easy to accept? Something to mull over later. “In your bag, in the front pocket is a data rod with a song on it. It’s old and Terran and super cheesy, but… every word of it is true. You were made for me in the stars, Dag, and that’s how I know we can make this work.” She knew the temptation was to relive their promise to send a message everyday, but life happened sometimes and it would only cause resentment if they made promises they as Starfleet officers couldn’t keep.

“Make it work? Ha. Honey… it does work. And no matter the distance, the time, the crap that is going on her or there or anywhere… it will always work. Because I love you more than any obstacle Fate throws at us.” and he smiled at her. “You are my life, Faye… and nothing is ever going to change that. You are my center… so everything I do or have comes from you. Got that?” he asked as he brushed her cheek with his finger.

Daggum

That tiny, annoying voice that often arose, whispered in the back of her mind, repeating the lies she had at least more recently begun to feel more certain were untrue. She brushed hem to the side, doing the exercise that had been a part of her therapy for years now Your protection is noted, but your input is not needed now, * she thought before allowed her attention to shift back to Dag. “I’ve never been that for anyone before so its… overwhelming. But I love you more than I thought possible.” She exhaled and then grinned. “I look forward to getting married though. How’s that* for a surprise,” she said with a laugh. “I look forward to standing hand in hand, with people who care about us surrounding us with love. I can’t think of a more perfect start to a life together. So… I guess we just need to be patient. Soon, Dag, soon…”
