For a moment the air in her lungs stilled as the weight of his words settled into her mind. Expansion allowed her to resume the give and take of air in her body and Faye just sat with her breath for a moment. Ordinarily, such a weighty pronouncement would become overwhelming for her, but much like that pivotal dinner where Alex gave her his impression of her future, Faye was stilled and awed. Of course, she had never thought about it in terms of how it could help others, because that would be too overwhelming. But it was true- if she could make it to the centre seat, so could others. Success for her was different than many other officers she had known in her career and perhaps her seeming lack of ambition did not mean she didn’t have goals, but they were driven by something much quieter.

Reaching out, she rested a hand on Alex’s arm, breathing. “I’m going to miss your speeches,” she said, quirking a smile. “Permission to call you when I need one now and again?”

~Faye

“Permission? Hell, Calloway… thats an order.” and he smiled and put his hand on hers and patted it. He looked at her for a moment and then said “You know… I’m gonna miss you. But I wouldn’t trade you moving on for all the latinum in Ferengar.” and he chuckled. “Besides… I imagine your wedding reception is going to be amazing.”

Alex

Faye shook her head. “It’s the damnedest thing. I mean I never thought in a million years I’d be one of those women who wanted all the pretty little details, or even have a day where everyone is so focused on you. run for the airlock and all that. But here I am planning a lively little wedding!” She snorted and sighed.

“l’ll tell ya the thing that really hit me hard when you told me Zef was gone, was a somewhat selfish thought, because Your relationship ended, and for me, I just lost my therapist. And Alex, I don’t know how you handle my baggage some days but for the record, I’m grateful. It’s really hard to suddenly have a new therapist. I should be used to it by now, but I’m not. I don’t let these people in so easily and Zef was there when I was undergoing a massive transformation. If I hadn’t had that feedback, I don’t think it would have gone so smoothly. I don’t like the idea of having you fill-in for her right now, but I don’t know what else to do until yet another new person I’m not even going to get to know very well sweeps into my life,” she said with a frown. “So, yeah, anyway, I see what you’re doing Cochrane and know that it doesn’t go unnoticed or appreciated,” she said as she moved the trays back a bit to where they would catch the artificial light through the glass top of the greenhouse.

~Faye

“Me? Therapist? Oh no… not on my best day. Honestly… I don’t see how those people do it. And I don’t think it is selfish of you to think that way. I’d be surprised if you didn’t. But I will say this… one of my first thoughts when I got the notice not from her but from Fleet was… “Really? You had better told Faye or I am gonna be pissed.’“

Alex

The expression on Faye’s face froze and it was a long moment before she blinked. “Well, you’re already pissed, so…” Faye shrugged. ” It’s hardly the first time I’ve had to start all over with a new therapist, and I’m sure it’ll happen more times than I prefer, but it’s something I have to deal with, right? But its… hard Alex. I don’t think people realize how much effort and energy goes into rehashing my situation and the nuances that make it all make sense. And there’s never any guarantee that the next person I deal with will ave direct experience with my disorder. It’s not rare, but it’s also not all that common either. But I’m aware that I’m leaning more heavily on you than I might otherwise, so despite your shrugging it off, it does mean something.”

~Faye

Alex took her hand and squeezed it.. “Well… how about I promise to always have a couch for you to crash on? Be that for amateur therapy or just a place to hide from the galaxy for a few days… you’re my other sister, Faye. My home… wherever that is… is yours too.” he said with a look of utmost sincerity.
