The corners of Sair’s mouth tugged upwards just a hair. “Sometimes the thrill of the new is the thing that allows us to toss caution aside and leap where we might not normally. And wonderful things can happen from that, just as much as sometimes we can get deeply hurt,” she observed. “Do you feel though, despite how it ended, that you now have a clearer picture of what is important to you in a relationship and how you want to proceed with one in the future?”

Alex smiled and said “I have a clearer picture that my first instinct was correct: don’t get involved with someone stationed on the ship.” and he chuckled again. “And I know what I don’t want… thats for certain. So I suppose some new knowledge is a good thing.”

Alex

“Knowing what you don’t want is often as useful as knowing what you do,” Sair said, warmth infused in her bright voice. “So what do you intend to do with this newfound knowledge?” Whether there was anything to do or was necessary was beside the point. For the moment she was still gathering information and figuring out how Cochrane thought.

Alex thought for a moment and then said “Use it to make more informed decisions about my personal relationships going forward; and as a reminder to trust my gut instinct more. And finally… as a basis to looking for what I do want in someone, I think. I’m going to look at relationships like the ancient Terran artist Michelangelo did sculpting. See the formless marble, then try to remove what isn’t a sculpture. Allow the relationship to simply create itself. Hard, given my predilection for giving orders and expecting them to be followed.” and he laughed.

Sair chuckled. “Do you find it hard to take off the uniform and just be Alexander Cochrane?” she asked, phrasing it that way quite intentionally. Even if you had hobbies and things to do on downtime, you could still find that separation difficult, f it was even necessary. For some people it wasn’t.

Cochrane smiled and leaned forward, looking at her directly. “The uniform and Alexander Cochrane are one and the same, I’m afraid. Always have been. My entire family tree is ripe with service members. Generals, Admirals, war heroes and heroines… spies and saboteurs. All doing their part for king and country, the people, the cause. So me just being me is still me being an officer.” and he leaned back. “Now… do I carry that over into my personal relationships? Well… I suppose to a certain extent. It’s hard not to when ninety-five percent of your life is being the Captain. But… I also view my own self as a man who is a Ship’s Captain. And I am very aware of the need to keep some semblance of self separated from that. To that end, I try and keep certain places free of work. Where I sleep. Where I play when on the holodeck. And my actual home on Vulcan. Our home has one room and one room only for the various accolades and memorabilia that come from our various careers. Otherwise… home is for family, not business. And time at home is time for reveling in those relationships. And to that end I try to mirror as best I can that same divide.”

Sair nodding, finding herself genuinely interested in what he was saying, not just because she was evaluating the man, but because what he was saying was revealing other deeply interesting things about him, things that made her reflective of her own life and the way she hoped it could be going forward. She wasn’t actively mulling these things over right now, of course, but they were things she’d want to reflect upon more later. “That seems to be doing you some good overall, I’d say. Relationship difficulties aside, are there any other challenges you’re facing, or concerns both professionally or personally you have?”

Cochrane thought for a moment. “Well… allow me to answer that question with a question. How familiar are you with my personnel record? Specifically… the issue of my mother?” he asked candidly.

Cochrane, CO

“I did read your record on my way over and at least the notes left from your most recent evaluations. I know her actions created a lot of strife for you over the years, though I had the impression that you had no contact with her now. Has that changed, or has something happened to cause issues related to her to come up?”
