“I did read your record on my way over and at least the notes left from your most recent evaluations. I know her actions created a lot of strife for you over the years, though I had the impression that you had no contact with her now. Has that changed, or has something happened to cause issues related to her to come up?”

~Sair Songz, CNS

“Rare contact, and then only if absolutely necessary or she pushes the matter… which she does from time to time just to show us she can. But it ties into your previous question… about taking off the uniform and just being Alex Cochrane and other challenges I face. The Admiral will always be a challenge, I think. The damage she did…” and he looked out the window and shook his head, “… not just to me. My sister. My father. My brother. But to the actual Federation and Star Fleet. It’s… immense. When my sister, she and I are twins by the way, were growing up… we made promises to each other. That she and I would get our family clear of that… stain… on generations of service.” He turned and looked back at Sair. “And I think we are doing well in that endeavor. But it isn’t without it’s challenges. Especially the higher we get in the Chain of Command. The Admiral’s actions are still problematic at times. And when those times happen… my reactions can be slightly more ‘rigid’ than my typical ones. And that…” and he exhaled slowly, “… that is something that has always troubled me. I don’t want her to have that much influence on me. But it’s hard… she is my mother, after all.”

Sair nodded thoughtfully. “When you say your reactions are more rigid, what do you mean by that? Tell me more,” she said. He was self-aware, which was not unexpected given his position on the ship, but also nice to see. Not all those who rise in the ranks are so circumspect.

Alex thought for a moment and then said “I always try to remain open-minded and to remember that there are always multiple sides to a story… multiple perspectives to contend with. When it comes to the Admiral, however… the pain she has wrought on my family and me personally tends to cloud that. Justified or no, I always seem to react as if she is at fault without even getting all the facts. Honestly, the only reason this is probably not as big an issue as it could be is… so far… that position has never been in error. Not once. Which again I believe speaks more to how difficult she is than anything else.”

As he was speaking, his body language shifted significantly. He became more tense, more closed off, and more defensive.

Sair bent forward, bracing her arms on her thighs, her pale brown eyes seeking out his striking blues. “And hypothetically, what if you found yourself in that unenviable position of being in error. Of judging her incorrectly. What then?”

~Sair Songz, CNS

Alex shrugged and exhaled slowly. “I would hope I would be able to acknowledge that error and make the appropriate gesture of apology. But in all honestly? I’m fairly certain I would probably say something more akin to ‘What did you expect? You being on the right side of this is a statistical anomaly of universal proportions.’ or something equally hateful. But on a positive note… that would still be better than anything my sister would say or do.” and he chuckled.

Sair grinned. “I have no personal experience with twins, and they’re exceptionally rare on Kobliad these days, and I recognize that all sibling relationship are different, but I’m curious about your sister and your relationship to her. Is she a big part of your life, even though you’re all the way out here?”

~Sair Songz, CNS

Alex smiled. “She is. She’s a Commander in the Fleet Science Command. Her, my dad, my step-mother… we’re all very close. I have an older brother as well. He is an Engineer. Well known. We aren’t as close… he is five years older so we were never really ‘together’ in school or anything. But we still talk and stay up to date on what all of us are up to. But Racheal and I are and always have been close. We entered the Academy at the same time, graduated in the same class, lived in the same dorm. We’ve always been close and distance doesn’t really effect that.”
