“Try it,” Sair nudged gently. “But perhaps let’s start with something else before we get there. How about we instead go over all the negative things. You were given this job whether you expected it or not. What’s the worst that can happen?”

~Sair Songz, CNS

“Worst case?” Kiama asked with a soft, humourless laugh. “I make a mistake and people get badly injured and die,” she continued, her voice even while her black eyes seemed to be brimming over with emotions.

Sair nodded and regarded the CSO seriously. “And as a scientist, what is the probability of that actually happening?”

~Sair Songz, CNS

Kiama narrowed her eyes and tilted her head a little as she stared back at Sair. Though her eyes had become unfocused and she was silent for a few moments. “Not as high as for some of the other Department Heads, the First Officer or the Captain. But still too high for my liking,” she finally replied. She had run some calculations in her head and could have given Sair an estimate regarding the probability, but decided to skip that. It didn’t really matter after all.

“Okay, ” Sair said, hiding her smile. “So, let’s try an exercise then. You name and outcome, say someone dies because you made the wrong order. Let’s list out all the worst case scenarios and then we can one by one come up with things you can do to see that those things don’t happen.” She gazed at Naim with raised brows, looking to see how the idea landed.

A cold shiver ran down Kiama’s spine at Sair’s suggestion and she the muscles in her body tense up. Especially in her jaw, neck, shoulders, upper back and abdomen. Along with the tension in her body, her breathing had become shallower and faster. Swallowing hard, she replied, “I- I can do that.” She nodded, but for the moment didn’t say anything else.
