Sair got up and moved past Kiama, pausing to rest her hand on her shoulder, the weight of it intentional. “Breathe,” she said softly.

At Sair’s touch, Kiama closed her eyes and tried to inhale more deeply. She didn’t fully manage it, but she was moving a little further away from being on the verge of hyperventilating.

Removing her hand, Songz retrieved a large padd from her desk and shifted her chair to it was next to where Naim was sitting. Before they jumped in, Sair wanted to make sure they were on even footing. Place your hand where the tension is in your body currently and take long deep breaths. imagine your breath is travelling through your body to that spot.”

“I don’t have enough hands for that,” Kiama laughed nervously. But she placed one hand on the back of her neck and one on her stomach, nevertheless, as she started to take long deep breaths. At first they were still pretty shallow, but with each breath she took her breathing slowly became deeper and longer. At the same time she felt some of the tension leave her body. After a few moments, she opened her eyes again and smiled apologetically at Sair. “I’m sorry about that,” she said softly.

Sair tilted her head, resting the PADD on her lap. She gazed deeply at Kiama, with an open and honest expression. “Why?” she asked.

“For panicking like that?!” Kiama replied, half question, half statement. “I’m usually much more in control of that side of myself. I’m very impulsive when it comes to showing affection and gratitude. And I know I’m a very emotional person. But most of the time I am able to stay much calmer and more collected. I don’t usually freeze like that,” she continued as she small crease appeared between her eyebrows.

“So it was an anomalous moment. Like any good scientist, I think you would be curious about anomalies.” Songz gestured to this room. “would you agree that this is a safe space in which we can explore anomalies? And if not, tell what makes it less safe.”

~Sair Songz, CNS

Kiama nodded and chuckled ever so softly. With her head tilted slightly to the side, she looked at Sair and replied, “This room is pretty much as safe as can be. Even though there are ways for people to come in here without permission, it’s not something that really happens in my experience. And I know that, as long as I am not a danger to myself or to others what I tell you stays between us. I guess the only thing that always makes any place feel a less safe to me is the fact that I can’t let my guard or rather my mental shields down. I sometimes lower them a little on purpose, but 99% I’m very mindful of keeping them firmly in place to protect myself.”
