With a soft chuckle Kiama pulled slightly back again and brushed the tears away. “Well, a speech could go two ways, I think: Either I’ll blubber and don’t get more than a few words out. Or I don’t stop talking. Not sure which one would be better,” she laughed. “But serious though: If you like, I’d be honoured to give a speech at your wedding.” And with a mischievous grin suddenly playing across her dark face, she asked, “How do you feel about a bachelorette party?”

Faye gave her a sideways glance. “I am not sure what that would entail, and by your expression I suspect it may come to be something I regret, but I think I’m going to go out on a limb here and say, sure, if you want to plan a little party, by all means go for it. Just so long as people respect my moratorium on booze. Others ca drink, but I can’t.” She shook her head. “Bad idea still.” Things were good, but sometimes it was the joyous times that could lure her into a false sense of security and she would then use crutches (like alcohol) when there were more healthy ways to cope with things.

“I’ll make sure of that. You have my word. And I’m not going to plan anything too crazy. Promise,” Kiama smiled. “And you can always change your mind. Till the middle of the party even. I want you to enjoy this. That’s all that matters to me. How does that sound?”

With a grin, Faye held out her hand. “Sounds like we have a deal,” she said, eyes glinting with both delight and humour. While there were lots of rituals associated with weddings, Faye had few ties to any of them. So one by one, the more that were added to her and Daggum’s celebration, the more it felt like Faye was embracing this massive change in her life. All of them felt like baby steps towards the greatest leap she’d possibly ever make in her life. For some that would sound dramatic, but given Faye’s life, it was still an understatement.
