Walker raised his eyebrow at the request for the mines.

“Well I’ve already got a weapons locker full of phasers for just the CRIT team, take a look there Lieutenant. If you need more, just tell me the type and how many. As for the mines… How many, and how quickly would you need them?”

Walker would love to see the face of the person back at HQ when the request came in. It was definitely pushing the line of carte blanche he was given to fulfill request for CRIT. But the whole idea of CRIT was to think outside the box in the first place.

“As a heads up, I will have to let the Captain know about that request. The Manhattan isn’t rated to carry one, let alone several, of those mines. We’ll most likely have to arrange for a drydock period to get the proper containment added to the ship. So if you are needing them quickly, we’ll have to push through the paperwork ASAP.”

Pretha would have spit out her drink, had she been drinking. A laugh caught in her throat as she held up her hand and shook her head. “It’s all good, Durach. I was kidding. The ship isn’t rated for them and I highly doubt the Captain would approve it. But I am sure we can find time next time we’re near a planet base, to get you one or two to chuck around for fun.”

Walker chuckled, “it’s a deal.”

Shaking her head, she glanced at the others and nodded. “Well, how about you introduce yourselves and tell me why you want to join the CRIT team. I’m asking because I wanna know right now if you are here cause you want to be, have been told to be or think this is a glorious way to put bonus points on your next promotion exam.” She smiled and winked and then grabbed up her PaDD. Once the intros were out of the way, she’d get down to brass tacks and start with the outline. With luck, there would be time for some training.

“I’m Lieutenant Jesrix Aevin.” The trill started the introductions. “I’m a helm officer and small craft pilot, and I decided to join the CRIT team because the skills of a pilot may prove useful. And if you recognize my second name, my symbiont has gotten around a bit so that’s probably why.”

-Aevin

“Welcome. I’m aware of your piloting skills and I’m sure they would indeed come in handy at some point.” Pretha smiled and glanced at the others. “Who’s next? One of the things we’ll be doing is learning a bit of each other’s skills. So everyone will know a bit of science, security, medical and engineering.” She glanced back at Jervis smiling. “Even piloting.”

She continued, “The point being so we can respond no matter the circumstances without trying to scramble folks together at the last minute.”

Leaning back against the wall, Walker made a few notes on the PADD he had in his hand.

Namid dwelled in a chilly laboratory where their interactions consisted of brief ‘have you considered [x]?’s and arguments with a stubborn machine whose trade involved daily mockery. It was safe to say they were unfamiliar with many of Manhattan‘s crew. But, they aspired to change that. Nodding along to Jesrix’s introduction, Namid offered a warm smile and glanced between the others.

They raised a volunteering hand and turned to wave at those gathered, “My name is Namid Argimeau. I am a scientific intelligence officer, meaning I collect and analyse scientific data for largely strategic use. I found myself motivated by a curiosity about the CRIT team and its function, but also a genuine desire to have a more connected experience aboard Manhattan. So,” Namid offered another crooked smile, “hello! It’s wonderful to meet you all.”

“Welcome, Argimeau.” She nodded and looked at the others. “Well I guess we can get started a bit. Others coming in can catch up. So, CRIT is a bit of a different set up than most Away Teams. The leader can change at any given time drowning on circumstances and need. If the primary focus is in engineering, that specialist would take the lead. If we were up against an anomaly, science and security would give their expertise. Likewise, if we were taking on survivors from a catastrophy, medical and security would take lead.”

She looked around to see how everyone was taking it in. Many didn’t like following others and she needed to see who would bristle at the idea. “Our priorities will be set on critical systems first. So if we’re in a meteor storm fighting another ship and they board is, obviously protection of critical systems would take precedence over the anomaly. And while most times the Captain will be the one to set priorities, we, as a team, also need to be aware of the highest properties at all times. The Captain only knows what he’s told. If we see things shift, we’ll need to respond immediately and not wait and see if he is aware yet “

Looking around the room she smiled. “So now you know the meat and bones. Anyone wanna back out? If you are here because you want to be the leader of an elite team, this isn’t the place for you. Everyone, at some point, will most likely be the one calling the shots. I need everyone to be able to follow as well as lead.” She hoped no one would walk out. There were few enough folks in the room as it was.

“We’re all Starfleet officers.” Aevin said. “We know how to follow the chain of command just as well as anything. Is the CRIT team public knowledge or do we have a secret handshake we do when there’s an emergency?”

-Aevin

Pretha smiled. Yes, she knew they were all aware of the Chain of Command. But she also knew some wouldn’t follow subordinates if they were put in charge. She hoped this wouldn’t be the case, and didn’t bring it up. “It’s not been announced ship wide, no. And I doubt going back to your departments and striking a heroic pose announcing you were part of the CRIT Team is necessary. But it’s no huge secret. And when the Captain calls for the Team, that would be our queue to join up in whatever location was necessary based on the situation and Alert message given.”

Cocking her head slightly, she looked around. This isn’t an Ops situation. We are like Away Teams and Department Teams. No, they aren’t secret, but we don’t go around bragging either. We do our job and get things back to Green. That’s our job.” She smiled and shook her head, rolling her eyes. “Ok, if you want to strike a pose, you are welcome to do it in the next meeting. How’s that?” She glanced around hoping she would get at least a smile here and there.
