Jasmine arrived in sickbay looking at the room. Today was going to be a long day. Passing off her samples to Lavonne and Shavoone, she moved to her console to check the intake reports. So far the only person she knew that had died was from the bridge and now in the morgue. Before she started the autopsy, she wanted to make sure there were no other problems lurking before she was hip-deep in tissue and organ samples to try and figure out what happened to cause the man to die from heart disease. She also had Sair to deal with. The woman’s medical situation was complicated. Luckily the now counselor was once a doctor so the part or questions Jasmine didn’t have, Sair could fill in the blanks.

There were a great number of minor things. Sickbay was crowded but nothing looked like it was critical. Mostly it was nurses taking reports, complaints and logging them for follow up.

“Doctor,” came the voice of one Meera Das, her voice deeper than expected. “We are logging dozens of minor complaints from acne to grey hair to aches and pains. There are two who are much different from their medical profiles. One much younger. One older. We have held them here pending tests. The others we are rescheduling for appointments. Do you have any recommendations for us?” Looking at Meera who, while from Alpha Centauri, had origins from India on Earth, appeared younger. Some faint lines that had been about her eyes and the corner of her mouth was gone.

“Yeah, let’s see if we can find a pattern to the complaints. Are they the same from one race to another or is it gender-based? I have no idea what is happened except people seem to physiologically be older or younger. The effects are varying widely between those experiencing them.” Jasmine didn’t want to say Das had less wrinkles. No matter how she was playing with the wording it just always sounded like an insult versus a medical observation.

Meera replied as though she was expecting the questions. “It is most identified among the human population where age seems to show more clearly.” She paused and frowned as though not liking that statement very well. “It doesn’t seem to show among Andorians as clearly, or Vulcans, however their longer life span is most certainly a factor. Whatever happened it did not discriminate between any gender. There have been three instances where crew members have felt better, where a past injury has disappeared. We’ve noted this in bone scans where their record had broken bones in the past decade and the scans show them to be gone, as though they never happened. But this is not consistent either.” She held up a hand. “I broke this finger two years ago. There is no trace that it happened in my scan. But Caroline Walker, an engineer had a wrist injury in about that same time and it still shows.”

“Where are the two you are holding pending the test results,” Jasmine asked looking around the room.

Meera pointed to the far end of sickbay where they lay on beds. Each one was actively being scanned by an attendant. One appeared middle aged, and one a teenager. Both looked distressed.

“Oh and make sure you let me or Sair know when her family arrives. Have her deuterium treatments ready,” she said making her way to where Meera indicated the patients were located.

“I will see to that, doctor,” she said.

“Ensign Bailey,” said the attendant to Jasmine indicating the one who was older. He appeared to be approaching middle age with some grey and lines on his face. Last medical scan showed him to be 28.”

“Hello Ensign Bailey,” Jasmine kept her tone light and the smile on her face as her mind and inner voice took a one hundred and eighty-degree turn. If one blip turned a porting of the crew ten to fifteen years older, the humans in the crew were in for a world of hurt. Vulcans and other long lived races could handle jumps like that but the human life span was much shorter. Two blips and their life could be over. “So can you confirm your birthday for me?” Holding the tricorder, Jasmine tried to play off the interaction as normal as she could make it. It was normal but completely acting that way would be like lying to the crew.

“This June I’d be 28,” Bailey clarified, his voice a bit gravely. He cleared his throat. “It was freaky. I was shaving and then there was the bump against the ship and I looked down to grab the sink. When I looked up .. I saw this mug.” He pointed to his face.

Jasmine nodded as if the visage peering back at her was a twenty-eight-year-old male. The slightly graying temples, the more weathered skin tone, and the creases by his eyes confirmed what Dees shared and probably what the tricorder was going to support. Ensign Bailey was older than he was an hour ago.

“I mean, my grandmother always said that a fright could age you. I know I’m not the best looking guy but this is taking it a bit far.” He was noticeably nervous and more noticeably trying to cover his concerns with humor.

“Oh, honey doncha worry,” Lavonne Washington seemed to slide in from out of nowhere taking Brian’s hand and patting it. “I will meet you do drinks in the lounge the second we get you up and outta this bed.”

“Uhhhh,” Brian began. “A good strong tea would be nice.” He glanced from Lavonne to Jasmine then back again. “Maybe even add some gin to it,” he said, rubbing at his chin as though expecting a beard perhaps or something. “Any chance of getting a tea?” he asked.

“Baby you let LaLa take care of you,” Lavonne spoke in a deep but comforting tone as she patted the man’s hand. “I will get you that tea.” Her comment was loud enough for everyone to hear. Leaning down she lowered her voice for Brian as her face moved near his ear. “Honey I will get you anything you want. I gots some damn good gin the cupboard. I got you,” she patted his hand and gave him a wink as she walked a bit slower than probably needed to the small cabinet next to her desk that said GET OUT.

“For medicinal purposes I’m sure,” Bailey said. As she walked away he looked over to Jasmine and mouthed ‘Lala’?

Glancing over her shoulder, Jasmine hastily scribbled a note on the PaDD and flashed it to Bailey. The letters were large enough for the man to easily read them. I am so sorry. IOU 1 it said before Jasmine pressed it back against her chest so that Washington could not see it.

“Baby there is nothing medicinal about this,” Lavonne Washington let out a hearty chuckle as she gently lifted Bailey’s head and put the cups to his lips. The liquor inside was strong and smooth. It had been joked that the stuff was the ancient concoction used to numb the soldier of the American Civil War before a surgery.

“My momma brews this from Elderberry plants back home in Chicago. She grows them right off the fire escape.”

Jasmine had to stifle a laugh with a cough. The only thing caught faster than the Levodian flu on the Manhattan’s sickbay was any single man by the Washington sister’s. Reaching down she patted Brian’s shoulder and gave it a small squeeze. Nothing would take your mind off your condition than trying to convince the happy-go-lucky cougar of a nurse that you were not in need of a date on Saturday. “Lavonne do you mind sitting with Brian while I check on the other patients?”

As she backed away from Brian she mouthed You are going to be fine. She would make it up to him later but for right now Jasmine had other people to see. Moving over to the monitor, Jasmine looked at the console.

As she waited for the results, Jasmine looked over at the girl. “And who are you,” she asked the girl while looking at Dees. One of them had the answer.

“Nancy,” she replied with a sigh. “Science technician Nancy Turner.” She looked at her hand and how she looked smaller in her uniform. “What happened? I look like I’m 17 again.” She didn’t sound ‘that’ put out. “I’m not going to go through another acne phase am I? But I remember everything.”

The other was a woman, or girl really now, set in her mid to late teens.

“Heck no. You get the best of both worlds until we figure this out. All the strength and energy of being a teen until we can get you back,” Jasmine patted the woman’s hand as she saw the tricorder preparing to deliver the results on Brian.

The tricorder blinked. Brian Bailey’s scan showed that he was otherwise in decent health. There were some aspects of bones weakened and a touch of arthritis in one hand starting, optical degradation (aka eyesight poorer) and low iron levels. Relative age estimation was that he was between 50 and 53 years old.

IC:
Whereas Sair was fair haired, her mother Kel was dark haired, the long thick strands twisted up the back of her head and neatly secured. She was a no-nonsense kind of person, but deeply empathetic. She was used to emergencies unlike the toddler Sair whose hand she was holding. Little Koro had a mass of brown fluffy curls framing the long brow ridge, the side ridges tiny at this point.

The trio of Kobliads walked in, the two adults being the ones who were more at risk due to their need for dueridium, but Sair was internally panicked about something also being wrong with her little boy. And yet, the former physician turned counsellor was too good at hiding her feelings from the public to let that terror be so easily seen.

Both Sair and Kel had their own dueridium supply, each specially made for their biochemistry. She lifted up Koro and set him on one of the few free biobeds and told her mother to wait there while she moved over to Wynter. “Can I help with anything? Same with my mother. She’s a trauma nurse back on Kobliad. If you need more hands, just let us know,” she said, wanting to feel useful in a situation and on a ship where she was still trying to find her place. Was it strange being a part of the team as well as the patients? Absolutely. But the Kobliad adults were well used to this sort of situation.

Bump
Bump .. I don’t ‘think’ I have a reply to do here .. point it to me if there is :) .. Gene

“Medically no for now but counseling yes,” Jasmine said with a frown. “We have Brian Bailey getting older and Nancy finishing puberty. It is probably gonna screw with their minds. How are you feeling? Can you handle your and your mom’s deuterium needs though? It is complex and you both are by far the experts on it.” Moving around the table, Jasmine looked at Kodos with a smile.

“We can handle our injections,” Sair said. Dueridium was a high-need item and she shouldn’t be due for a dose, but she felt like she was. But to take it early? She’d never done that before. Their medical regimes were intensely calculated to the point of minutiae. So it would never occur to someone to take more, more often. Never. “I don’t feel unwell at this point, so I’m stable. I’ll let you know if that changes.”

“How are you doing Kodos?” Pulling out a tricorder, Jasmine began to scan the child.

KoroHid slightly behind Sai but his mother just crouched beside him, letting her hand drop away from him so he could be scanned independently. “Koro, this is Doctor Wynter, one of the people I work with. She’s just going to take a peek with the scanner, just I would. Is that okay?” Her son gazed back with wide brown eyes and nodded. Sair smiled. “Okay then, stand still.”

OOC: I’ll let you determine the results Gene. :)

Scans on Kodos would show that he was a healthy child of … estimated a year older than the last scan. Dueridium levels were at peak stability, however. His height, however, evidently enlist any real growth spurts but, in looking, he did seem to be a touch taller.

Jasmine looked at the results and smiled producing a lollipop from her pocket for the small boy. “He is in perfect health. The scans are saying he is a year older physiologically but there is nothing wrong with him at all,” she stated looking at Sair.

“Grape or Cherry,” she held out the lollipop which was found in just about every civilization in the known universe. Candy on a stick was not new but the concept of getting one from a doctor visit was an Earth thing.
