Lieutenant Haygen sat at his desk at Star Fleet Headquarters. Looking out the window he could clearly see the San Francisco Bay. Data Pads littered Haygen’s desk. Haygen sat back in chair reflecting on his career. How had he gone from Hard Charging Marine Non-Commissioned Officer to a cake eater sitting behind a desk meant for a Lt. Commander a rank higher than sat on his collar. Turning back and looking through the windows of his office into the interior office, he could see the 12 Intelligence officers under his command going through the information that was constantly provided to them. Everything from sensor readings, human provided intelligence to rumors. Rear Admiral Sidney Souers opened the door from the hallway directly to Haygens Office. “Ron you have a few Minutes?” Haygen was already standing up to the position of attention. Haygen knodded to the Admiral “Of course sir”.

Admiral Souers was the commander of Star Fleet Intelligence. A powerful position but he had become friends with the Admiral. He had asked several times for a transfer back into the field but the Admiral had always told him that his “abilities” were better served running the intelligence teams at Headquarters. Haygen Motioned to his old Coffee press, “A cup of Coffee sir?” The admiral accepted “Your one of the only officer I know here that still brews his own coffee from scratch” Taking a sip “but you know I believe it may be one of the best cups that I have had this month.”

The admiral sat down “Ron, I have always believed that you are the best person to work this desk” The admiral reached out and touched Haygens desk, “but I know that you want back into the field. With that said I have been keeping a look out for assignments that I believe would require the talent that I know you have in you. One happened to come over my desk today.” The admiral handed Haygen his a data pad. It required a thumbprint to open. Haygen pressed his thumb to the pad and the file opened.

=/\= To: Starfleet Intelligence Services
From: Starfleet Command Special Services Division
Subject: Request for Intelligence Officer, USS. Manhattan NCC 88000
Star Fleet Command believes that Diplomatic operations and scientific operations must be at the heart of the mission of the USS. Manhattan, but we also recognize the importance of gathering intelligence and cultivating intelligence assets on the numerous planets that are located during this mission in order to provide a strategic advantage to Star Fleet.
Therefore it is requested that Star Fleet Intelligence assign a Intelligence officer at the lowest rank of Lieutenant who is believed to be able to achieve the above stated goals to the USS. Manhattan. Said Officer shall depart no later than 48 hours from receiving this order. =/\=

Haygen read the assignment twice. He was of course familiar with the Manhattan that it was in the Delta Quadrant. But an assignment on the Manhattan would be huge not for his career but as an intelligence officer. Gathering intelligence and cultivating assets on cultures that no one has ever met before, that no Federation intelligence has ever worked with, that was the things dreams are made of for intelligence officers. Haygen finally realized that he was in his own head instead of talking to the Admiral, “Sir are you offering this assignment to me?” The Admiral smiled “Yes Ron, its yours if you want it.”. Haygen stood up, “Sir I will begin preparing to leave immediately.” The Admiral looked around the room, at the walls there was nothing on the walls, no personal item anywhere in the office “Im assuming that won’t take long for you.”
Haygen walked to his door and opened it, “Lt Johnsburger get in here”. Haygen picked up a pad as the Lieutenant came through the door, “Lt, im being reassigned, you will find in this pad a list of all active cases and operations, you should considered yourself the acting OIC”
Turning to the Admiral “Sir I will be on the first available transport to the wormhole.” The Admiral shook his head “Haygen, one day you will have to settle down and put down roots somewhere besides just your job. Good Luck Lieutenant.” The admiral shook Haygens hand and then walked out of the office.
Haygen returned to his small apartment, gathered his belongings which all fit inside of a single duffle bag. Then he was off. After several hops around he arrived outside of the Wormhole. The transition through the wormhole was a different and not quite pleasant experience. After hours of travel in the Delta Quadrant the shuttle made the Rendezvous with the Manhattan.
The Shuttle Endevour One signaled the Manhattan =/\= USS. Manhattan this is Shuttle Endevour with one to beam over =/\=
After given the clearance to beam over Hagen stood waiting for the tingle of the beam, as the static appeared in his eyes Haygen for the first time in a long time felt excited about his future. Now to see what was on the other side.

Lieutenant Ronald Haygen
Intelligence Officer

Shedda stood in the transporter room and nodded to the chief as they waited for their newest crew member to board. New crew usually boarded at Event Horizon, but they weren’t scheduled to arrive back at the station for awhile and with Faye’s departure and the nature of their mission they needed her replacement on board. The lights swirled and coalesced into Lt Hayden. Or should be. A glance at the face matched the personnel file she had read when the assignment had been made.

With the sequence complete, the Orion woman stepped forward offering a firm but controlled hand shake - she was always cognizant of the fact she was stronger than humans. “Lieutenant Ronald Haygen, I am Cmdr Shedda Mal’athar. Welcome to the Manhattan.”

Mal’athar, XO

Lt Haygen Materialized on the pad, he observed the Commander standing in the transporter room and immediately snapped to attention, hoping that his black tunic indicating that he was intelligence was in fact straight and crisp as professional appearance is of the upmost priority to him. He took the Commanders hand and shook it and then Snapping to attention “Lieutenant Ronald Haygen reporting as ordered Commander, Permission to come aboard?” This was the traditional request to enter a ship, Star Fleet was steeped in tradition if it was anything.

Lieutenant Ronald Hayburn
Intelligence Officer

Shedda stepped back coming to what she called ‘command attention’ a slightly less stiff version of formal attention. This kind of thing always made her feel like she should salute, but they had done away with such things centuries ago. “Permission granted, Lt.” She turned to the transporter chief, “Thank you, En.” The young Benzite officer nodded with a pleased grin. He was just doing his job and in typical Benzite fashion was eager to please his superiors. Therefore he appreciated the XO taking the time to notice, even if the work was routine. “If you are inclined to leave your bag, the chief will make sure your bag arrives to your quarters. If not, this way Lt.” Shedda stepped out of the transporter room and into corridor while Hayburn decided. She’d found over the years Intelligence Officers tended to pack light and keep possession of their items. Jumpy bunch, but cool under fire when called for. “Cpt Cochrane sends his welcome and promises to meet with you when he returns.”

Mal’athar, XO

Lt Haygen cringed at the thought of someone else taking his belongings, but he had his data cards safley tucked away in his tunic, he handed the bag to the crewman, “Thank you Chief”

The transporter chief grinned, “My pleasure.” He set the bag on the transporter pad, looked up the berth assignments and as the door to the room closed his hand swiped up and then back down and the bag disappeared, and was no waiting in Haygen’s quarters.

Haygen then moved with the Commander, hearing the part about the Captain, “Im sure the Captain will be flooded with duties when he returns.” As they walked down the corridor, Haygen wondered if the Orion Officer had been harrassed by security and intelligence to a point that she hated the branchs. “Ive been interested to meet you Commander, you are one of a handful of Orions in Star Fleet. Im sure that it has not been easy with the attention that you have recieved from some of my counter parts in the intelligence world and of course Star Fleet Security.” Pausing for a moment to study the Commanders expressions, “ive had the pleasure of working with several Orions in the field and I have always found your species to be highly organized and dedicated to their duties. I think it will be a pleasure to work for you.”

A half smile turned up the corners of her mouth. He’d heard of her had he? She wondered if he’d heard the same things the bridge crew had heard about her. Those were imminently nicer than what security and intel divisions assumed without founding. She wondered what welcome Cochrane had in store for Haygen. When he paused she looked over at him meeting his gaze. “They were doing their job, Lt. I can’t fault them for that. However time consuming and invasive it may feel at times, I harbor no ill feelings for any of them. They did their jobs exceedingly well.” In fact she had them to thank. If not for all those officers she would have no hope of adopting Maava. “I honestly have no idea. I wasn’t raised on Orion or any of their colony worlds. My father took me away when I was still a new born. Though he did his best to teach me about the rich vibrant culture. And warned me how it is often over shadowed by the syndicates. Which is not a reflection of the actual people.”

Lt Haygen smiled, fond memories flooding into his mind, “You are very correct Commander, my experience with the Orion people has always been pleasant when outside of the syndicate. It is a shame that the syndicate is the only thing thought of from most when thinking of the Orions,”

Mal’athar nodded, “It is.” It was too bad her mother didn’t see it that way. Being the intel officer, Shedda was sure Haygen was familiar with her background and who her mother was. The way Shedda saw it, her mother belittled their people with her corruption and encouragement of the centuries of misconceptions about Orions. It was why she focused totally on her work.

“But you Lt have quite a career to speak for you. Tell me something that is not in your Star Fleet personnel file. What makes you Lt Ronald Haygen?”

Mal’athar, XO

“Honestly Commander, besides working the only true pleasure I have partaken in is trying and enjoying exotic cuisine. I love trying new foods, regardless of how revolting they are.” The Lt observed the sleek lines of the ship as they walked. “Besides that I have not dated or been involved in a relationship since being commisioned, nor have I taken leave. My passion is truly my work.”

Lt Ronald Haygen
Intelligence

“Nothing wrong with that Lt.,” Mal’athar gave a small lift of her shoulder. “If you are passionate about what you do, you never work a day in your life. Why intelligence?” Why was it humans always had to mention personal relationships any time they were around her? Part of the stigma she supposed. “Well I will warn you, this crew has a habit of trying to draw those of us that are married to our work, out of our offices to have ‘fun.’ If you enjoy good food, exotic and not, be sure to visit the officer’s mess. Chef Harv is amazing. Just don’t drink anything but the coffee he makes. He is a bit of a tyrant about it.”

Haygen nodded, :noted commander”
“What would you like to see first?” They came up to the turbolift and Shedda pressed the call button.

Mal’athar, XO

Haygen regarded the commander, he had never been permanently assigned to a ship, always only on temporary duty. “Honestly commander its your choice,”

“Well sickbay was across from the transporter room and keep going that way,” Mal’athar pointed toward the direction they had been headed, “is the officer’s mess. Your quarters are one deck down, lounge deck 8 forward section. But something else, I think would be more appropriate.” Stepping onto the lift, “Deck 13.”

“What do you hope to accomplish out here, Lt? Besides the top secret and classified assignment you can’t tell me about. What does the Manhattan do for the career you are so devoted to?”

Mal’athar, XO

Haygens right side of his mouth curled into a grin for a fleeting second, “Commander the ability to collect information that has never been collected by Star Fleet before.” He paused for a moment, “You see commander most people think of intelligence as simply a military tool, but its so much more. The information that we collect can have profound effect on everything. If we learn the culture of a species, the wants and the needs then the diplomatic mission is even stronger, we can keep conflicts from even starting the more we know about each species. Finding the strengths AND weakness of each species that we meet here will keep the entire federation safe. In short Commander I have the ability to go where no intelligence officer has gone before, to learn things fresh and new. This should be the dream of every intelligence officer in star fleet.” Haygen paused for a moment realizing that he may have gotten a little to passionate “You see commander I was given a highly sought after post in the intelligence community, but I did not want to simply sit behind a desk. Being in the field is where I truly want to be.”

Lt Haygen
Intelligence

Shedda was content to let Haygen wax passionate about his work. Even if it was a topic she was unfamiliar with or one she didn’t enjoy that didn’t make the additional insight of less value. Individuality, it came in more forms than stars in space. However this was a topic she could relate to. Cultures and learning about them. “Reminds me of the Terran saying ‘preaching to the choir’. My back ground is in anthropology and archaeology. Learning about new cultures is my passion. Dead as well as living ones. I can understand wanting to be in the field. I miss digging in the dirt, literally and figuratively. What can I answer for you? About the ship, crew, even myself. Most are very curious but afraid to ask.”

Mal’athar, XO

Haygen did not hesitate, “What is the ships biggest Achilles heel?”

Shedda answered immediately. “Our solitariness. There is Event Horizon and the ships assigned to its construction, but they are stationed at the worm hole. Out here we are alone. Without assistance, with limited resources, and most often without the ability to contact command for quick or even delayed answers. We have made a lot of friends, but our only safe haven is truly Event Horizon.”
