Songz nodded. “Sounds like you’ve thought things through well. Can you show me her room?” She honestly doubted there were going to be any red flags, but she still needed to work through the checklist.

“I went though all this on the Dark Sea. Every thing had been approved, but when I transferred out here to the Manhattan I had to start the process over again.” Shedda waved toward a door at the opposite side of the suite. She really would have preferred it closer, but in the grand scheme of things the room was quite close enough. Inside there was a crib, securily anchored, a lamp over the bed that was mounted high on the wall. The dressar was built in and like the main room the controls were connected to biometrics so Maava couldn’t open them and climb in. There was a gathering of small bins, mostly empty for toys. A set of blocks and a set of small (but not tiny) stuffed animals. “I didn’t know what to get. She has toys already, and I thought, the next time we’re at Event Horizon, I could take her and pick things together. She was so tiny the last time I saw her she wasn’t interested in more than pulling my hair.”

“I’m sure you’ll find your way together,” Sair said softly. “And a lot of the safety concerns they might have in a home on a planet are covered by the ship’s systems, so my list if rather small.” She gave an encouraging smile to help Shedda know that Sair was on her side and confident in this happening for the XO.

“Have you considered any classes or transitional therapy? What’s your plan for when Maava gets here?” Sair asked.

Shedda started to answer and then stopped. She ran a hand through her hair, shaking it out in the back. “I…didn’t. Well I did. On the Dark Sea one of our counselors was trained in family and childhood psychology. We were going to work with him. He had experience handling adoptions and loss. I forgot.” She looked around what was supposed to be Maava’s room. “The adoption services offers subspace sessions, but comms back from the Delta can be spotty. I don’t suppose I can ask you last minute, Sair? Or maybe one of the teachers is certified?”

Mal’athar, “well what now?”

Sair offered a warm smile. “Now, I go file my report and you feel confident that you have done everything to prepare for this very special event.” She could have said a lot more but for the moment, Sair just studied Mal’athur’s reaction.
