It took deft fingers and patience to slip the pins with the tiny blush rosebuds into the braids that formed a crown on the top of Faye’s head. Which is why she was glad Kiama was doing so, rather than her in all her nervousness.

More than once today she had been told it was perfectly normal to be nervous and she believed them! That didn’t make the nerves go away though. This was a lot for anyone, but for Faye (especially factoring in her BPD tendencies), it was easy for overwhelm to paralyze her. One factor made this less likely and she grinned as she noted the feline weaving about her bare feet.

“Yes, Tess, I know. I’m driving you bonkers. You’re such a good girl though and I appreciate it.”

Tess chirped and Faye laughed.

Her hair was done in short order and they moved her off to get dressed.

Shara, the matron-of-honour was already dressed so she could help Faye however she needed. It wasn’t everyday that she got to get dressed up and not unlike the Black & White Ball the crew had had when she was here last, she had found a gown that she rather liked. In charcoal grey, it looked from a distance as lace, but was really made up of sequins sewn to make up the pattern, shining under any light (https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c4/3d/b8/c43db866f0987208879cd2545932aad7.jpg). Her thick brown hair was pulled up off her shoulders in a soft mass at the back of her head and she wore light touches of makeup.

It took a moment to negotiate the abundant lace at the floor and delicate cap sleeves, but soon Faye was in her dress and Shara zipped up the back carefully trying her best not to cry. “Good gods, none of us are going to make it through this day, are we?”

Faye turned and beamed at her mother. “Probably not. But I think today of all days, that’s okay,” she said, her hands moving over the soft net that flowed over her narrow hips.

Shara shook her head, taking in Faye. Her braid crown with flowers and the rest of her dark brown hair flowing in loose waves down her back. The diaphanous pale green dress that was so unlike Faye’s rough exterior and yet seemed to suit her perfectly. “You’re so beautiful,” Shara said.

Faye flushed a little and yet as she gazed at herself in the mirror they had set up in her bedroom, she had to agree.

But Faye wouldn’t be Faye without some quirk to her get-up, so instead of some dainty little shoes, she had cream coloured knee-high boots in leather and lace.

There was a chirp at the door followed immediately by a knock… Alex’s trademark.

As he entered the room, he was dressed in his full dress uniform, newly adorned with Fleet Captain insignia at the collar and cuffs. His black hair was perfectly styled and his ice-blue eyes seemed ten shades bluer than normal; and he carried a small black box in his hand. He smiled at Shara and said “I must say, Commander… you are quite the striking figure when you choose to be. Please don’t tell your husband I said so.” and he grinned and then he saw Faye and he stood dumbfounded.

“Holy shit, Faye…” he said softly and then he stepped forward and smiled. He held the box out and said “Old Earth custom. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.”

Inside the box were four items. The first was book written in Vulcan. “My mother’s poetry journal from when she was a girl. She wanted you to have it and she says congratulations.”

The second item was a small model of the Manhattan… but with a clear section showing the garden she had built. “Just made this morning by Engineering. And made just for you.”

The third was a set of Captain’s pips. “Those are my first set. Consider them a loan until you earn your own. A reminder of what you are striving for.”

Last was a blue magnifying lens from a hydrospanner. “Thats the lens from the hydrospanner you were using on the Auxiliary Bridge the first time we met and spoke. By the way, you left cables lying there when you were done. Before the honeymoon, you have to go clean them up as I told you to back then. I had Engineering put them back so you could.” and he grinned and winked.
