Daggum nodded, and made sure use his bulk to keep the press of people from overwhelming Faye. “Just married and already telling me what to do… whatever have I got myself into?” he said with a grin and shook hands with well-wishers.

After a little bit of absorbing all the congratulations, Faye whispered to her mother that they were going to take a short break and share some time alone before they kicked off the party. With a nod to Lieutenant Kahf with whom she prearranged this little moment, she slipped her arm through Daggum’s. “You’ve done your surprises, now it’s time for a little one of mine,” she said, gazing up at him, adoration felt deeply in her core.

Gathering the short train of her dress, she led him up the path past the reception area, all the way past the pond and up to the Hill. She kept wanting to stop and kiss him but determined to get knew there would be plenty more this evening. Navigating carefully in her heeled boots (which she wisely made the choice to go with a chunkier heel), Faye led him up, and up to the top, to her favourite spot in the garden: the bench beneath the dewdrop tree where they could look over the garden from above. “I thought we could get a few photos here, in this special spot, if that’s okay?” Kahf was waiting just below, giving them a moment.

“Absolutely, wife-of-mine.” Daggum said and bent low to give her a soft kiss. He sat up and motioned Kahf to come and said “You’re the artist, we’re the clay… make something great.” and he smiled.

Kauf just chuckled. “No crafting needed, you’re such a lovely couple to being with,” she said, moving up.

And thus she took multiple photos of them on the bench, sharing this quiet moment. When she got what she needed, she reached into her shoulder bag and pulled out a plain blue cloth wrapped object and handed it to Faye.

“Thank you for keeping it safe for me,” Faye said.

“No problem, happy to be a part of fun surprises. Now, I’ll let you be. See you at the party.”

The object was small and tied with a gold ribbon and was easily held in Faye’s hands. “This is my present to you,” she said, handing it over.

Unwrapping the cloth, Daggum would find a dark brown leather bound book that was embossed with the words A Story from the Stars and the same image of Faye and Daggum and the wormhole that was on the wall of the mushroom house. Inside, was tidy handwriting (Faye’s) that said: *Today begins on page one, but we have plenty of pages for the rest of our life together and I intend to fill them up.

On the first actual page began a poem that spanned two pages, also hand-written. And even as his eyes traced the words, Faye began to recite the poem with all the spoken-word finesse she had (very) rarely demonstrated.

Motes of dust
thirteen billion years old
collide, coalesce, become something, more.

Bound by light and dark,
all swirling together to bring you
to me in inexplicable ways.

Sloughing off carnage of the past,
with slow painful swipes, we rise together
from the dark, from the depths of elsewhere.

The buzzing comes and goes, a distraction,
safety net cast prematurely, unnecessarily,
you pull me from the brink with precise tenderness.

Oh how I thought this would never be!
Not for me, not for a wanderer lost in the dark,
Not for one who had cast herself aside first.

Preemptive strike.

But I knew that day, that terribly perfect day
where the tunnel within the galaxy lit up your eyes,
showed me the stardust glittering.

Made of the stars, for me,
to be exactly as we are,
as we need to be.

The promises are few but I
-with heart shining anew-
am happily bound to you.

Take my hand, I don’t know the way,
but together we will
always be stardust.

“I’m no Vash’tur, but being acquainted with a famous poet has certainly upped my poetry game,” Faye said, beaming. “I figure I have plenty of time to improve. Lots of pages after all.”

Daggum sat with mouth agape and stared at the words, reading through them as she recited along… then again… then yet again. Without taking his eyes from the page, he softly cleared his throat and said “Faye… that… I… it’s beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.” He looked up at her, emerald eyes bright with barely contained gold tears of happiness. “I love you, Faye.” he said quietly, but earnestly.

Daggum

This was why she hadn’t wanted to recite the poem in front of everyone. She wanted this reaction from him where she could see it, without being overwhelmed by everyone else. Reaching a hand up, she rested a hand on his cheek, thumb caressing his jawline. “And I love you too, which is a good thing considering we’re legally bound to each other,” she said with a grin.

Dropping her hand, she laced her fingers through his and looked out over the garden she loved so dearly. “I’m scared, Dag. Not of a life together, but of leaving here, but starting over again. It really started to hit home when I was one the Dawn and yet… being there showed me how far I’ve come and that I have such an incredible future ahead of me. It’s all very bittersweet.”
