Promptly at 0900 the following morning Shedda walked through the door of the officer’s mess, she’d already been up and working since 0600. A ship like the Manhattan never really slept and was only rarely ‘quiet.’ She had no idea what Alex had in store for her today, but had opted for a uniform jacket rather than the full jumpsuit, and her hair was tightly braided and coiled into a bun to keep it out of her face. She made her way over to their usual table and sat down. Waiting to grab food until Alex arrived.

Mal’athar, XO

Alex came in reading a PaDD and looked up long enough to ascertain where the XO was and took a seat. “Good morning. I trust you slept well?” he asked as the door to the kitchen opened and Harv came out with a tray with coffee and breakfast sandwiches which he sat down without a word.

“Decently and yourself?” Shedda glanced over, hearing the door open. She wasn’t sure who she was expecting, other than Harv, the man would never let anyone else in his kitchen. She stared at the coffee and chose to silently bypass it rather than comment. She picked up a sandwich and took a bite. She’d made a deal with Alex and she’d make the best of it.

“So… any questions before we begin?” Alex asked.

Shedda grinned, “What’s the betting pool looking like?”

Mal’athar, XO

Alex chuckled. “I didn’t tell anyone… yet.” and he laughed and poured two cups of coffee and took a bite from a sandwich. “I felt it best you get a taste of the training before we add the element of maintaining your reputation as the unflappable XO.”

Cochrane

Shedda groaned. “Okay so lesson one, increase the stakes by going for the psychological attack. Got it.” She took a swing off the water bottle she’d brought with her and then tucked into the sandwhich, eager to get started.

Mal’athar XO

Cochrane chuckled and then picked up the remainder of the sandwich and wrapped it in a napkin. “C’mon then. The enemy waits for no one.” and he stood up and began walking towards the door.

“Pop quiz time. In an engagement with multiple opponents, what is the correct order for the prioritization of ship’s systems?” Alex asked as they walked through the door.

Cochrane, CO

Shedda grabbed her sandwich and the water in a ‘I wasn’t preparred for you to move that fast’ type of way and then hurried to follow him out. And of course he would ask a question when she just took a bite of the sandwich and had food in her mouth. She might have glared at him for that, or not, it was hard to tell. She took a sip of her water to clear her throat. “Life support, shields, weapons, sensors, impulse engines.”

Mal’athar, XO

Cochrane smiled and said “Perfect recitation of the Academy tactical course… which is, of course… garbage.. In an actual combat scenario, you have to remain fluid. Prioritize on the fly, and realize that sometimes you will have to make sacrifices in the moment that outsiders will criticize after. But they aren’t there when the disruptors peel back your hull plating and cut the warp nacelles in half.” Thrys tapped on the turbo lift and headed to the holodeck area.

“Question two. Of the following, which gives the best tactical advantage: superior weaponry, superior defenses, superior scanning, or the element of surprise?”

Cochrane, CO

Shedda stepped onto the lift as she considered. There were plenty of examples of ships with inferior weaponry defeating greater opponents because they had better tactics. Superior defenses didn’t defeat your enemy on their own and just insured you lasted longer in battle. If they were really superior the ship could, theoretically just sit there and wait till the other ship got bored. The element of surprise was a tactical advantage but it wasn’t one you could assume you would always have. “I would say superior scanning. Tactics depends on knowledge and the ability to take what you know, or can logically surmise and put it to best use.”
