Adami nodded. She sensed that there was more to the story than what Revna was letting on, but she was fine with that. It would be more fun to find it out for herself, after all. “My second question is this: Do you have any advice for me as a diplomat? I’ve been keeping a journal of all the words of wisdom I’ve been given since I enrolled in the Academy, and I’d like to add yours,” she said.

Revna hummed softly. “Well let me start with my two favorite quotes from history about it. Atal Bihari Vajpayee said, ‘Quiet diplomacy is far more effective than public posturing.’

and

‘Diplomacy is listening to what the other guy needs. Preserving your own position, but listening to the other guy. You have to develop relationships with other people so when the tough times come, you can work together.’ That was from Colin Powell. He was not only a great diplomat he was also a very successful military man.”

“As for advice from me…I would tell you to remember that at our core we are all people. When we disagree 90% of the time it’s not about power for power’s sake, it’s about protecting what matters most to us. A deligate that won’t barter to give away precious resources that they don’t need but we do, is scared of giving away something that can support their people and bring them prosperity. They fear being taken over, or loosing a bargening chip that could have more value to someone else. A world leader who pushes for more concessions than anyone else when joining the Federation fears loosing what makes their people unique, what defines them as a people. In the end we are all trying to protect what is precious to us. So it’s important to remember that. We aren’t just the governments we represent but we are people and are guarding what is precious.” While she spoke Revna began a second cup of tea, apparently the woman really liked her tea like some like coffee.

As Revna spoke, Adami was writing intently in her journal, writing the two quotes down word for word and taking note of as much of Revna’s advice as she could. She’d be sure to look up Bihari Vajpayee and Colin Powell in her spare time. Once she finished writing, Adami closed her journal and smiled. “Thank you. I really appreciate it. On a lighter note, what’s on the ship as far as recreation goes? I’m trying to find a good work/life balance,” she said.

Revna leaned back, “Well there is the garden on this deck. It’s beautiful and there are individual plots available on a first come first serve basis, but there is always work to be done. Groups meet to do art, music, and events held there frequently. The Ship’s Lounge is on Deck 8. The lounge is equipped with both a replicator and a staffed kitchen, as well as a manned bar. There is a cooking class held there and some of the crew participate in a potluck. Do not mistake the kitchen in the lounge for the kitchen in the officer mess. That is the domain of Chef Harv and he doesn’t share, unless he really likes you. Which means you tell him what you want and he makes it. He’s protective of it. There is also a stage area in the lounge which can be used for performances or ceremonies. There is an acting group and music groups that perform. The ship has several holodecks. You can reserve time there, but if you look at the reserve schedule you’ll find times that people are looking for groups. From hikes to ruins, to club hopping.”

Adami smiled. “I definitely want to get involved with the music aspect of things. I took up clarinet while I was at the Academy, taking private lessons off-campus when I wasn’t in class. It’s something that I very much enjoy. I might try out the cooking class you mentioned as well,” Adami paused, realizing that all of her questions have been answered. “I think that’s all of the questions from me. Is there anything else you wanted to discuss?” she asked.

Revna smiled, “There will be, but for now I’d like you to finish your mandatory onboarding checks, and then meet with our exchange officers. When you’ve done that, come back and we’ll discuss our next project.”

Adami nodded as she got up. “In that case, I look forward to working with you, Mrs. McKenzie,” she said, extending her hand out for her superior officer to shake.

Ravna stood up as well. “I look forward to it, Reil. And please call me Revna.” She shook her hand in a warm friendly grip. ” If you have questions about anything please ask. I look forward to hearing what you think of our exchange officers.”

“Revna…good to know. I’ll see you around,” said Adami as she left the office. Thankfully, the crowd had dispersed, so she was able to easily walk to the turbolift and take it to the deck where her quarters were. ‘Now I can finally finish unpacking,’ Adami thought.
