Her brown eyes skimmed the PADD and Sair lifted another to check on a detail. “The department evaluation is good. They are doing a solid job and have had no complaints. No signs of initiative though and it seems like a status quo situation.” Sair was hoping the nuances of these evaluations would become obvious as they went along do for the moment she was happy to let Shedda show her how they would go.

Shedda nodded, “Still young though, first posting. Could be a matter of being intimidated. More worried about doing a solid job than making a grand impression. His evaluation shows he his self motivated and works hard, fills down time. His supervisor did note that he seems nervous around higher ranking officers. Maybe give it another review period and see if he finds his feet?”

Mal’athar, XO

“Agreed,” Sair said with a nod. “Though I’ll keep an eye out for further reports that indicate that nervousness is becoming an hindrance. That is an area I can help out with.”

Gazing at her PADD, Sair tapped the edge. “Crewman First Class Gertrude Kim is next. She’s got favourable reviews and three years experience. I would mark her for promotion to Petty Officer. What do you think?’

Shedda pulled up the file on her own PaDD. “Her time here has gone well, but this says there was an altercation at her previous post that led to her request for a transfer.” The incident report made it clear that Kim didn’t start the problem, but she’d certainly finished it. “To me it appears she stepped in where necessary, and she’s had no problems here on Manhattan. I’m inclined to agree with the promotion, but what’s your take on it?”

Mal’athar, XO

Sair tapped a finger on her chin for a moment. “I believe in people having the benefit of the doubt and having second chances, so I’m in favour of letting Kim have this chance. She’s shown no sign of whatever had been happening before happening here and even then, as you said, she hadn’t instigated it. I lean towards seeing the personal growth.”

Shedda nodded, “I agree.” Shedda signed off on the eval and then pulled up the next one. Most were routine, mostly showing evidence of performance but not yet eligible for promotion yet. Star Fleets never ending paper trail. “How are your son and mother settling into the ship?”

Mal’athar, XO

“Fairly well. Koro is only two, so really he doesn’t know the difference all that much, other than we don’t have weather on board outside of the holodeck. But he’s going through a bout of separation anxiety, which is not unexpected given we spent a couple months apart. But having my mother here has been great, though I think she’s starting to get a bit anxious about getting back to Kobliad soon. She won’t tell me that of course, but I know and I think Koro and I will manage on our own.”

Pulling up the next personnel file, Sair noted that discipline issues and that it might warrant a more serious conversation with the crewman to see if the Manhattan was really the right place for them. Out here in the Delta Quadrant they didn’t have the same resources and if someone was unhappy here, it made no sense for them to to find a more suitable assignment.
