Sair closed the lid of her case, her thumbs reflexively snapping the case closure shut, her hands remaining resting on the top of the case. “And what do you tell yourself when you don’t know where you are?” She didn’t mean physically either. Her jaw tightened ever so slightly as she thought about this gulf between her and her mother. It was like they were living two distinctly different realities: one that had possibilities but required changes people didn’t seem ready for, and another where sacrifice was not only expected by necessary.

Cochrane stopped with the packing and looked at Sair. “I tell myself to pick a direction and start moving. I may not know where I am going, but there is no use being late.” and he gave her a friendly wink and stood up. “Counselor, that was an exquisite meal. Thank you so much for the invitation. Your family is absolutely charming, as well. I can’t remember a time in the past months I have had such an enjoyable lunch. I hope you and your mother will do me the honor of joining me for dinner? Officer’s Mess. Tonight or tomorrow evening, 1900 hours. Let me know which works best for you.” and he held out his hand.

Songz was momentarily taken aback by his assessment and the offer. The lunch, well, awkward at best was where she’d rate it, and now he wanted to have dinner with them both? In the Officer’s Mess, a place she felt decidedly uncomfortable being? With her mother? Ohhh, sneaky man. Sneaky, sneaky. Placing her hand in his, she pulled herself to her feet. “Tomorrow might be easier. If my mother is joining us, then I need to arrange for someone to watch Koro and I’ve just started exploring who can help with that.

“The children’s center is always open and staffed. Not all species follow the standard waking cycle. Im sure you can introduce him to some of the other children there., but tomorrow it is.” Cochrane said with a small smile.

She was going to have to go through that process soon anyway, so a couple hours one evening shouldn’t be too much for Koro. Besides, she was a call away.

“I went all the way to the Delta Quadrant. I suppose that was a pretty telling direction, yeah?” she asked, allowing a small smile to grace her features.

“Indeed. Maybe if you knew a trained therapist, they could help you sort that out. I know a great one, but unfortunately there may some difficulty getting an outside perspective.” Cochrane said, and laughed. “Till tomorrow evening then, Counselor. Have a wonderful day.” and he simply turned and walked away towards the exit.

Planting her hands on her hips, Sair just watched him leave, ever so slightly mystified. She couldn’t quite tell if he was being polite to make her feel better or really was seeing this all so vastly different than her. “Come on sweet boy, let’s go and see what that grandmother of yours is up to, hmm?” She folded the blanket and basket in one arm and her prizar in the other, and they went off in search of Kel, which had leave rather mysteriously. What was it that she had to do? Or was that just an excuse to politely leave? Sair hadn’t been able to tell. All she knew was that Cochrane had been right that she wasn’t able to provide her own objectivity.
