“There’s a few,” Kel said with a nod. “Maybe not a lot, but a few.”

Sair grinned. “Oh, I bet if we talked to a few people outside of the hospital we’d find a whole bunch more.” She looked at Shedda. “Life in the health professions can be rather insular. Out of necessity at times, but I bet there are others who have some good stories. When in doubt, ask the artists.”

When the ekal was ready, Sair grabbed another bowl and a wooden tool that was basically resembled a masher but the base was flat and solid. She stood beside Shedda. “Okay, here comes the part that takes a bit of finesse. I want you to gather the cloth together at the top, making sure no sides escape and give the top a twist. Don’t let go. Then still holding the mesh, transfer the strainer to the new bowl.”

Shedda gathered the cloth and did a quick twist of the ends making it look like she had done this before. She transferred the whole thing to a new bowl.

Once it was secure and in the second bowl, Sair handed Shedda the masher. “Take the koland press it onto the nuts, trying to squeeze out more of the liquid. It helps to place the mesh bundle against the side of the strainer and press the kol into the side. Careful of the liquid that comes out because it’ll still be hot. It’s why we don’t squeeze it.”

“Traditionally, it steeps until cool and then we squeeze out all the liquid and reheat it. But that is only good if you’ve got a lot of time. This method works equally well and we get to have ekal sooner,” Kel said, smiling.

Shedda slowly worked at squeezing the water out. “This is much like trying to hydrate and strain sediment and petrified plants in archeology work. It must be dine carefully so you don’t break anything.” She finished and set the kol and bundle down. “Ah but these things are worth the wait. Many things in life are. To allow them the time they need to be ready. Thank you for letting me help.”

Sair smiled. “It’s like you said, there are ways to share our cultural heritage and I know if we just keep it to ourselves that something more could be lost.” She took the second bowl with the extruded liquid and added it to the main bowl.

Meanwhile, Kel gathered a ladle and some mugs and carefully began to scoop the hot liquid in each. She handed Shedda one and then continued.

Sair took hers and grinned. “Enjoy!” She sipped hers and instantly the milky nut taste hit her tongue followed by a warmth from the seeds. But the ekalonlenum had a subtle earthiness and complex mixture of tastes, almost if you took several warming spices and mashed them together. She sighed happily. “This on a cold night was always my favourite growing up. It tastes of comfort to me, though I’m very aware that Kobliad taste buds can be different from other people’s.”

Shedda sipped carefully. That was interesting. Her face contorted in surprise, curiosity, adjustment, and delight. It was a comical expression but she obviously liked it. “Reminds me of…almond milk and hazelnut a little bit. More earthy though.” Comfort…hmmm. “Sair, you know what we should do…book the holodeck and have some kind of…cooler weather, camp fires or the like, maybe play a movie, like we did on Delotha. Then serve warm drinks like this, from everywhere. Open it up to all the crew. We could all use a little comfort all the way out here.”

A look of surprise passed over Sair’s face. “You know what? I really like that idea. It would be a more casual social opportunity without too much pressure to mingle if people just wanted to be there for the atmosphere. I would be happy to do something like that.”

Kel looked amused as she sipped from her mug. “And here I thought I’d have to work to convince you to go,” she said before shifting her attention to Shedda. “She’s been unusually shy around here. Very unlike my daughter,” she said, her eyes glinting with humour.
