Revna closed the comms and sat back in her chair, the beaded braids in her hair swinging and clinking softly. She genuinely smiled for the first time in weeks as a massive weight left her shoulders and her stomach settled. It had been a long conversation with S’Tek. She had been assigned out in the Delta for more than a year (if you included the time she’d taken to go home). She and Mike had agreed she was going to take this opportunity and make the most of it. He had said he wait for her, and she felt like they had both waited long enough. They also could not put off clan business any longer. She and Mike could handle most of it over subspace, Mike doing most of the work, and Seamus and Ragna dealing with what they couldn’t. Things couldn’t stay that way though. Revna didn’t want them to stay that way.

She was ready to go home. The truth was she’d been ready for awhile. It had been extremely difficult to leave Earth to return to the Manhattan to finish out the work she had started. It also wasn’t in Revna to leave her work unfinished. Now everything was set and she just had to let everyone know. She would of course have to speak to Cochrane and let him know she was leaving, but first there was someone much more important.

She opened the comms again, making a connection to Event Horizon. The Federation symbol rotated on her screen as she waited for Mike to answer.

Revna

The screen opened up and Mike sat in their bedroom on the station. He grinned as he saw her face and said =/\= Hey, hot stuff. Its a little early for comm-sex, but you know me. I was a Scout as a kid… ‘Be Prepared’ was the motto. =/\= and he wiggled his eyebrows at her.

Mike

Revna’s smile turned into a wicked grin and she laughed softly. “Oh so tempting, but how about the real thing instead?” Goddesses she loved that man. She could look at him all day.

“Oh…say in about 5 days. I’m coming home, for good.”

Revna

Mike blinked a few times and then said =/\= Huh? Like… you’re being moved off the Manhattan to the station? You get promoted or something? =/\=

Mike

Revna leaned forward slightly in her seat watching his reaction. “For the next three months I’ll be stationed on Event Horizon with S’Tek. Then I’ll be done. A self promotion to wife. I’ve tried this, I gave it 110% or more at times. I’m resigning.”

She picked up a cup and drank from it before putting it down. “I’m sure. I wanted something different from Star Fleet when I came out here and this isn’t it. This was just service under a different branch. This isn’t where I’m supposed to be. We’ve talked about you moving the clan, or going back to Earth to be there. I want to be with you to do those things.”

Revna

Mike leaned back solidly into the chair and just stared at the screen. It was a huge switch… not unwelcome, but wholly unexpected. =/\= So what you’re telling me is that we’re moving. But we don’t know where yet. But we have three months to figure it out. And to make all of that more palatable, you’re throwing on the whole ‘You’ll be sleeping in the same bed with me for the rest of our lives.’ thing. =/\= He took a deep breath and said =/\= I dunno, Rev… I’ve gotten pretty used to having the bed to myself. How am I supposed to sprawl out everywhere with you here? =/\= and he looked serious for half a heartbeat before giving her a wink and a grin.

Mike

Revna didn’t buy it for one minute and loved every second of it. She stared right back at him, completely serious, nodding along with his points. But that wink, it did her in every time. Her cheeks flushed and her eyes danced, and she really wished she was there with him. She tapped her finger to her lips. “You known Mike, the night you married me, I told you you could have the bed. I can take the couch or the floor. The couch in our apartment is a lot better than the one at the Ambassador hotel.” Then she grinned at him.

“I know it’s sudden, and we’ve only talked around it, but it’s a good time. There is nothing new on the schedule for months. And 3 months is more than enough time for me to finish everything I started. We can move back to Earth, we can go somewhere else. Where ever we want.”

Revna

Mike was thoughtful for a bit and then said =/\= Well, we have some time. Let’s get you back here first, and then I guess we need to convene a Clan Council. Me, you, your sisters and their husbands. Get the whole family on a call and see where things are at. But first… you gotta pack and I gotta clean this pig-sty. It’s looks like a single punk rocker has been in here alone for the past year. =/\=

Mike

Revna laughed. =/\=Uh huh, gotta put up all those toddler drawings that keep coming in. I’m sure Runa has had all the clan children make multiple and sent them to you. You’ve got five days, and then we can make a new mess. Oh, you’ll like this. S’Tek got the diplomatic corp to agree to provide a ship to move my whole family wherever we wanted if I would stay the extra 3 months. I told them I had a big family. The people back on Earth have no idea how big.” She rolled her cup back and forth between her hands. “You okay with this?=/\=

Revna

Mike looked at her and smiled and shook his head for a moment. =/\= Well hun, its not like you gave me a lotta choice. =/\= and he grinned. =/\= But yeah. I’m good. Besides… we’ve been married over a year and I think I’ve actually been in your presence like a week. It’ll be nice to be able to tell your sisters that you are just in the shower rather than a billion miles away when they call and you don’t wanna talk to ‘em. =/\=

Mike

Revna grinned, =/\=We’ll call it a late anniversary surprise. Alright so my sister’s, your cousins, do you want Tara and my parents involved?” And who knew where Tara and Oddvar were right now. That woman only seemed to be speeding up rather than relaxing. “Do you want to do this before or after I arrive?” She already knew what her sister’s would say. Runa wouldn’t care. They would stop by whenever she and Capall decided to stay in one place for awhile. Runa had this crazy idea of showing him the entire galaxy. Ragna would dig her heals in and argue till she passed out from lack of air for staying. “As for my sister’s they will just think you are refusing to share. I won’t complain.=/\=

Revna

=/\= Get packed and get here. We’ll sort it out then. =/\= He looked down at the console and said =/\= Speak of the devil… Seamus is calling. =/\= He looked up and said =/\= Get here. We’ll sort it out then. I love ya, Rev. =/\=

Mike

Revna laughed. =/\=Tell Seamus I said hi and that I told my little sister to chill. About what? Who knows, but it’s Ragna.=/\= She laughed and held up her hands, =/\=I’m going, I’m packing. I’d be there sooner if Cochrane would let me pilot. I love you, Mike. See you soon.=/\= she cut the comm and stood up. Time to go find the captain and tell him he would be getting a new Diplomatic Attache.

She stood resisting the urge to take things down off the walls and start packing. =/\=McKenzie to Cochrane. Captain do you ha e a few minutes to char?=/\= Revna headed out. If he wasn’t available there were still other people to see and details to take care of.

McKenzie, DA

=/\= Indeed. Meet me in my Ready Room. =/\= came the Captain’s voice over the comms.

Revna made her way onto the bridge and looked around. With any luck this would be one of the very last times she would step onto the bridge of a starship. The Manhattan bridge wasn’t her first but was likely to be her last. She pressed the chime and entered when beckoned.

Alex was seated at his desk and was reading a priority message from Event Horizon. He was fairly certain he knew what the conversation was going to be about.

Cochrane, CO

Revna took in the office again, the books and items that reflected the person behind the captain. She and Cochrane had gotten off to a rocky start, despite Revna’s enthusiasm for the position. She had certainly learned a lot from him, and Revna considered that a win any day. “Captain.” She greeted as the door slid behind her. She was never one to beat around the bush. “I wanted to tell you before Ambassador S’Tek beat me to it. When we dock at the starbase, I will be leaving Manhattan for good.”

McKenzie, DA

“Too late.” Cochrane said witha slight with a slight grin and he looked down at his desk and read aloud “ ‘Per direct request from the Federation Diplomatic Council to Star Fleet Command, the USS Manhattan is hereby ordered to make immediately for docking at Event Horizon station. Diplomatoc Attaché Revna McKenzie will depart her assigned station aboard the Manhattan for immediate transfer.’ ” he looked up and said “I get the feeling this message was written some time ago; the Ambassador had just been sitting on it.” He leaned over and reached into a drawer and pulled out a bottle and two glasses. “I’m not usually one for a drink so early 8n the day, but I also know that you probably feel like celebrating.”

Cochrane, CO

Revna felt like a rug was about to be pulled out from her? Transfer? No she was resigning. It was a short transfer though. Three months and she would be done. S’Tek had been sitting on it for awhile? “I thought he might announce it before I got the chance. The man is incredibly efficient. I did ask them to just send a shuttle rather than make the Manhattan turn around.” Revna moved over to a seat a d settled I to it with a huge smile. “I do. I am quite excited about where my future is going.”

McKenzie, DA

Cochrane slid a glass to her and said “Efficient is an understatement.” with a grin. “So?” he asked. “What are you going to do now? You have an entire galaxy before you. Or are you going to take that husband of yours back to Earth and settle down and raise sheep in the Highlands?” he asked with a laugh. “Or maybe something else entirely?”

Cochrane, CO

Revna lifted the glass and grinned before taking a drink. “Sheep? No, that would be my sister and my new brother-in-law. And apparently she has become rather attached to a black ram.” Ragna and a black sheep…the irony made Revna chuckle. “I honestly don’t know right now. We’ve talked of settling somewhere else, less refined, more rugged. Starting over. I wouldn’t mind settling in the Highlands, but I tell you, that McKenzie mansion is a bit much. I don’t think I’d ever get used to living in a house that big.” She took a sip of her drink, “But for right now, I’m going to enjoy just being with my family after so long.”

McKenzie, DA

“To family.” and Alex raised his glass and then took a drink. “Well… I have already ordered a course change. We are bit of a ways out, but we should be docked at the Horizon in about a week. Is there anything you need between now and then?” he asked.

Cochrane, CO

“To family.” Revna raised her glass and took a healthy pull of the glass. She leaned back in the chair, holding the glass with bith hands. “Comm time mostly. I will be busy setting up meetings and arranging arrivals and the such. Mainly what I usually do, just busier.” She had a lot to accomplish in the next three months and she was going to use the next five days to get started. “What do you need from me. Cpt? S’Tek is of course already looking for my replacement.”

McKenzie, DA

Cochrane shook his head and smiled. “Nothing. I want your last few days on the Manhattan to be ones of great joy. Its not often we get to send one of our own home permanently.” He took a drink and then said “I do have one request. Coordinate with Chef. I would like to have a steady supply of your family’s mead on board. Diplomatic gifts, special occasions… and for our own personal use, of course.” and he chuckled. “And if your husband ever releases a new song, I want the Manhattan mentioned on the acknowledgments!” and he laughed.

Cochrane, CO

Revna grinned, “Captain, there are 4 crates of a very new recipe waiting at the station for you. We started working on it when I had to take that sudden trip home. There are several crates of our signature brew as well.” Sipping her drink she grinned. “Nothing will make my Da and sister happier than to have standing order for the Manhattan. I will get with Harv and make sure he gets exactly what he wants.” Revna considered Alex a moment. “You know, Captain, every moment on this ship, even the hard ones, have carried pieces of joy. I think my biggest what if, is that I didn’t serve on Manhattan earlier in my career. ‘Course if I had I wouldn’t have met Mike, so,” she grinned with a shrug. “Now, you’ll have to talk to Mike about the song. If that ever happens. I have no objections though.” Revna lifted the glass again. Alex had excellent taste. “Anything you’d like sent back from the Alpha quadrant?”

McKenzie, DA

Cochrane shook his head ruefully and said “Nothing that is possible, but thank you. Although some good cigars might be nice if you are so inclined.” He drained his glass and set it aside. “Now to business. Your orders are filed and signed. Travel requests are approved. And the Ambassador said that your quarters are being packed up as we speak. What do you need from us, if anything?”

Cochrane, CO

“You never know what might be possible.” Gods didn’t she know that. “Cigars? Consider them already in the mail.” Revna considered the question. “I suppose it’s too much to ask to not make a big deal out of my leaving?” She grinned. Manhattan did love their parties, and Revna wouldn’t deny them the opportunity, but…

McKenzie, DA

Cochrane smiled and said “I’ll make you a deal. We will have a small, intimate dinner with only those you wish. You, in exchange, will record a farewell message for the ship which we will play at the party we have after you depart. Deal?”

Cochrane, CO

“Deal. I think the people who will be saddest will be Mike’s groupies that gather outside my office every Wed.” Revna chuckled and finished her drink. She set the glass on the desk. “I won’t keep you, Cpt. Besides there are a few other people I want to tell myself. And I have a holo meeting with the Bacgi ambassador in a couple hours.”

McKenzie, DA

“Well then… I suggest you get to it, Mrs. McKenzie.” Cochrane said with a friendly smile. “And I have some Captain-ing to do, so off with you.” and he rose and held out his hand. “And before things get too crazy… it has been a privilege to work with you. And I wish you and your husband the very best of luck in whatever the future holds.”

Cochrane, CO

“The same for you, Cochrane.” Revna clasped his hand firmly, “We have a saying back home. ‘Travel far and wide and you should possess the secrets of man.’ Truly, it has been a blessing to travel and discover the secrets of man with you and the crew, Captain.” Revna left his ready room and made a detour before heading g for the officers’ mess.

She stepped through the doors. It was mostly empty, but Revna could hear Harv working in the kitchen. She made her way to the bar and set a large wooden crate down. As she did there was the pleasing sound of bottles clinking against the padding. “Harv? I have something g for you.”
