Kaia took a deep breath of the shuttlebay air as her transport shuttle opened up and released her to her new post. She was glad to be back, even if her departure had been under such difficult circumstances. It really was as the humans said. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. The fur-like covering that had once hidden her prosthetic hand was gone - she had gotten used to the sight of it bare. Said hand was clamped onto a small suitcase that held all the belongings she had chosen to take with her; a few changes of civilian clothes, some holo-photo frames, and a selection of little gifts she had received from her siblings.The diminutive alien stepped onto the shuttlebay floor with wide eyes, the arrival reminding her how big everything on a Starfleet ship was. She let out a happy sigh.

“Welcome back, Ensign.” a slightly British sounding voice said. Fleet Captain Cochrane was walking towards her and he smiled as he approached. “It’s good to see you again. How are you?” he asked.

The very tip of Kaia’s tail flicked back and forth and she struggled to contain a purr, she was so happy. She was a little surprised the Captain himself was coming to welcome her back. “I’m doing quite well, Captain. It was nice to see my family and spend time with them, but it’s also very nice to be back on the Manhattan.”
It occurred to her briefly that she was technically older than him, when their relative lifespans were compared. It gave her a momentary smile of amusement. Once she had approached the captain, Kaia performed the customary Galdori greeting, placing her hand to her heart and bowing her head slightly. “May your hearts beat strongly.”

He returned the gesture and then said “I’m happy you could see them. Its not often we get to on this assignment. I hope all is well at home?”

Kaia nodded. “My parents are well enough for folks in their late 50s, they are enjoying their retirement,” she spoke with a slight chuckle. “My siblings are all well into their careers. We still have over ten years before any of us can consider having children, but I think Jiru has already found his future mate,” Kaia added, the purr in her voice indicating her joy at the prospect. “I, Hati, and Toki don’t plan to go through the second change, but Jiru and Asu are pretty intent on having litters of their own one day.”
There was a contemplative look on her face for a moment before she looked up at the Captain again. “Now, what brings me the honour of a personal welcome from the Captain for my return?”

He shrugged and said “My ship. I can greet anyone I want. Perk of the job.” with a smile. “But in all actuality, I had just finished up a meeting and knew you’d be arriving back, so I just took a quick detour to say hello. You were missed, Ensign. Its good to have you back with us.”
