(snip)

Shedda stopped playing and let the blade of grass on fold. “You pick. Long and wide. And pick from as close to the ground as you can.” She took the rind and set it aside.

Once he had his grass she had him sit with his back to her and put her hands in front of him so he could see how she folded it. “Then you blow here between your thumbs. See watch me.” And she blew on the grass again. Then she fixed the fold a little and let him try on his own.

Shedda

Koro blew air into the space and it did not result in the funny noise. Mostly it was just him spitting air between his thumbs. He gave Shedda a confused look. “It don’t work.”

Shedda nodded, “It takes practice. Here.” She pulled his hands up and she bent low. “Feel how my breath moves the grass.” And she blew on his hands and the sound wasn’t right. She adjusted the grass and did it again and there was the kazoo sound. “See. Slow and steady. Want to try on my hands?”

Shedda

He nodded eagerly and shuffled closer, blowing into her hands. It did not work. Koro tried again. And again, and again. Frustration overtook the toddler and he screwed up his face into a frown.

Koro was a determined little boy though and he shuffled a tiny bit closer, almost sitting in Shedda’s lap. He tried again and a tiny sound erupted from the grass. He beamed like he had just won every prize there ever was.
