Snip

One figure emerged from behind the barrier, circling from the rear to face Cochrane. Whether by touch or some command, the visor of the helm retracted like an iris. The face that revealed itself was young, looking not unlike that of Thera or Kela, if the skin coloration was more violet. “I am Morta, Speaker of the Dead.” What was different too was the absence of the fluid gestures of those in the city; Morta was stiffer in form. “We are here for information on the Machine. To restore the Balance. We cannot fail. Your presence interferes unless you are to help.”
- Morta

Cochrane inclined his head slightly and said “As I said… we are here to help. Can you tell me why you risk coming through the gateway and being unable to return to your reality just for information? Information we too seek, as it stands.”

Cochrane, CO

Speaker Morta’s resultant frown was a poster definition of the word. “Information and action, Cochrane Captain.” He looked about, past Cochrane to the forming security line. “The Hegemony recognizes that temporal imbalances have been created with the universes jostling for control. It sees the solution as restoring the Balance before all are destroyed. The cities must be brought home.”

Reauna shook her head, both from pain and from that statement. “You can’t. You’ll destroy everything. A cataclysmic event ..”

A security medic came over and knelt beside Shedda and Reauna, starting to scan. “I’ll give you something for the pain,” she said, pulling out a hypo and adjusting it. “What are you feeling?”

Shedda watched from her vantage point and had to scoot around as best she could to see what was going on. Great Cochrane was just standing there out in the open as a target and she was useless. Well she was probably pretty useless in a fight even without having been hit. That was the whole point of those tutoring sessions with Alex. Shedda looked around for the security team that had come down. Thera was unconscious, Reauna and herself injured. Scooting and wiggling around some more, dragging her limp leg with her, Shedda tried to watch the intruders. She was an archeologist after all. Surely she could pick up some details that would help them. Like “Speaker of the Dead”, and the stiffer body language, the tone inflection with Balance and Machine were both proper nouns.

Mal’athar, XO

((I’m confused… I thought I posted that the team and Juliet had gotten the worst of those hurt back to the ship… Why suddenly so many hurt, unconscious and such? Did I miss something?))

OOC: You could get some, but not all. Most if the injured are inside the temple. We are not in there.

OOC: Wookiee is one of the casualties .. been out with a stupid cold vying for a brain transplant for one that works ..
OOC: The ‘important’ voices have not yet been picked up in transport ..

Juliet frowned. The idea of a cataclysmic event didn’t sound all that appealing to her. She grumbled slightly under her breath about being glad to remain in Security and motioned for the other security officers to help with those nearby as needed. In between, she remained at the Captain’s side. It wouldn’t do for him to go down with her a few feet away., looking another direction.

Zakene looked at Cochrane. “Captain, would you like me to see what I can do to convince them we are here peacefully?” Zakene asked, from his position close to the Captain. “Possibly that we’ve run the numbers, come up with a solution. At least I can try to make them hear us out. After that. No promises.”

Lt Sozi Zakene, Diplomatic Attache

Cochrane looked at the diplomat and said very quietly “We aren’t going to start this off by lying to them. Besides, we still don’t know enough about what is going on to say that we can even find a solution. But we are going to try.” He looked back at Speaker Morta and said “W respect the Hegemony’s position, and in trying to restore the balance we are in agreement. Please, let us work together to try and find a solution that will be best for all involved. My ship and crew are scientists. Surely you would want to know all options before committing to a single course?”

Cochrane, CO

There was a pause as Morta looked past the trio to where security was setting up defensive positions. Evidently they did not expect any viable resistance from the city dwellers and the presence of Starfleet caused them to pause. Was there too some discussion through comms in the helmet or something as well, for Morta had a far away look for some seconds. He glanced back to where his people were then back to Cochrane.

“We will listen.” He looked back again. “Technician Zoon!” he called. A figure emerged from around the barrier and deactivated his face shield. His complexion was darker than Morta, more purplish. Under each eye he had what looked to be twin tattoos - inverted triangles and a matching one at the chin.
“Speaker!” he said, coming to attention.
“Relate. Assess their position. And our own.”
“But Speaker. The Technicians. The Auguries!”
“Have been wrong in the past.”
“But Speaker!”
“Assess. I did not say concede. Use your mind.”
“The Emperor ..”
“Is not here. I am Speaker. We must judge in his place. If we do not judge rightly all will be lost. If we do not act, all will be lost. Act we must. Your are Technician. Find our course.”
Zoon was evidently not pleased at a turn from what he considered their orders and that from the Emperor, but, steeling himself he saluted, something not dissimilar to an Earth salute, though rather than at the forehead the hand was straight at throat level. “Speaker.”

Morta turned and said, “Technician Zoon will assess with your technicians the variables.”
- Morta

Cochrane inclined his head and then said loudly “Security. Stand down. Prep for evac of wounded and set paired overwatch on all teams.”

Lt. Valharra was with Reauna, discussing the scientific process of how it was created in the first place. Lt Valharra thought it was logical that if he knew how it was created, he may find some thought into the creator’s way to undo it safely. As he worked with her, he also listened to what was going on. Upon hearing of the Technician Zoon, he turned back to Reauna. “I feel it logical to ask, you’re not going to have issues working with them if the Captain asks us to share what we know so far?” He asked as a precaution.
Lt Valharra, ACSO

Reauna frowned, the first real expression that looked human from them; mainly they had been more expressive in their gestures than in any facial expression. What Valharra could ‘take’ from that was that neither Reauna nor Zoon was excited to be working perhaps both together or on this. However, Reauna had her wounds to her leg. While minor compared to others, and pain hypos administered, she would need some assistance in mobility. “There have been no studies in the operation of the Machine for a great many years. I will not say there is no other option to what we believe, but neither do I doubt the studies of those before us.”

Kaia lingered in the background, mostly confused as to what was going on but trying not to show it.

Kaia, Ensign

Cochrane looked around and then spied Kaia. “Ensign. We need and Engineer. Are you ready?” he asked.

Cochrane, CO

Kaia nodded her head, tail wrapping nervously around her leg. There was so much going on.

Jewels exhaled a small sigh of relief that this wasn’t going to escalate. She was a bit concerned about Zoon’s response, though. The idea the man wasn’t truly with them on this endeavor made her a bit uneasy. But she remained silent. She would keep an eye on him, of course. She would be remiss, otherwise. “Sir,” she spoke low to the Captain, ” will you be inviting them to the ship? I will need to arrange escorts if that’s your desire.” She wasn’t sure how far this friendship would go. But she wanted to be sure she had all her bases covered.

Cochrane looked back and said “Lieutenant, I may be crazy… but I’m not stupid.” and he gave her a wink before turning back to face the Speaker.

Crystal blue eyes gazed back at the Speaker with a bit of curiosity and a small smile. She liked the Speaker. There was something about them that made her realize, like Cochrane, they’d make things happen as they should, regardless what their superiors hoped.

“Am I sticking around, Captain?” Zakene asked. He wanted to be sure if he was needed before returning to the ship. It was much easier to prevent a diplomatic crisis than to salvage relations from one.

Lt Sozi Zakene, Diplomatic Attache

“Please.” Cochrane said. “I have a feeling we will need you to provide… perspective.”

While the tension slowly bled off amongst the groups a crowd of city dwellers slowly formed outside the temple. One who looked to be a caregiver approached and knelt beside Reauna, running what may have been a scanner over her, though it looked like nothing more than a thin clear rectangle of glass. Thin light blue spider web like script played along it. Meanwhile, within the temple, those setting up shop there were doing so. Only Zoon looked to be standing out in the midst of the group away from his troop and looking formally uncomfortable. He was looking at Reauna, perhaps wondering if it was his shot who had wounded her, and what kind of alliance was present.

Juliet watched the others and remained at the Captain’s side. Watching each side care to their wounded reminded her of other battlefields in other places. It also reminded her not all battlefields were enemy line drawn. Most, like this, came from conclusion jumping and misunderstandings. Or, rather, lack of understanding. She was glad, at least this time, that this was more of a latter than a former time.

Meeting new cultures was one of the reasons she had joined The Fleet, to begin with. So seeing her first encounter on the Manhattan was a first contact intrigued her greatly.

Kaia stepped a little closer to the CoS, glancing up at her.

Kaia, Engineer

Cochrane looked at the Speaker. “Speaker. I offer you a plan. I will send my experts here on the planet with a representative of your people and a member of the city here. We will endeavor, together, to find an understanding of the Machine and try to find a way to save this time and your own. I have Engineers and Scientists who are trained to understand new technologies. This is Ensign Kaia. She is one of my best Engineers and will lead our Engineering group. Lieutenant Valharra will lead our Scientists. Perhaps while they work, you and I and our diplomatic officer can speak on next steps?”
