=^=Bridge to Engineering. Keep an eye on the structure of the Manhattan. I’m not sure how long we’ll be maintaining our position over the city, and the last thing we need is the ship falling apart around us.=^=

CWO Darach - COO

Walker waited patiently on the bridge. This was the worst part of being stuck behind, the waiting. It was a matter of time before something interesting happened, but who knew when that would occur. Until then they were left, waiting.

It didn’t help that he was sure the bridge crew wouldn’t enjoy his singing.

“Bring the ship status up on the screen. Let’s keep an eye on how the ship is doing so we aren’t taken by surprise if we overstay our welcome.”

CWO Darach - COO

In a corner of the main viewscreen - taking up a third of the whole - two images of the Manhattan came up. One was overhead and the other was in profile. Over the next few minutes data began to be populated and color coded based on structural integrity, stress points, power allocations, thruster and engine ratings. Thus far all was showing green.
- Wookiee

Walker let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding as the status displays came back green. Mentally he knew that there shouldn’t be any issues at the moment, just the computer still reporting that engineering is behind on the ‘regular’ maintenance. But there was still a little part of him that was preparing for it saying there would have been a major issue.

But for now he could relax, for the moment.

“Any status update from the away team?”

CWO Darach - COO

One young ensign from the rear of the bridge spoke out. “Nothing on Comms, sir. Optically we can see they have met with two of the inhabitants and are traveling toward the central building. And … ” his voice broke off and a startled ‘huh?’ came up as he sat quickly to attention and peered at his instruments. “The instant they entered, sir, I lost all life signs.”
- Wookiee

“Of course we did. I knew things were going to easily,” Walker grumbled as he leaned back in the chair slightly, thinking through different options. He slowly tapped his finger on the armrest of the chair as he thought. He needed options. Sending another team down was not completely out of the picture, but that was definitely around Option Z.

“Do we still have comms with them? And is anyone using a tricorder that we might still have a data link with?”

CWO Darach - COO

There was a pause accompanied by a lot of tapping. “I have zero comms from anyone.” He shook his head. “I have what might be a Starfleet frequency from a tricorder but it’s like it’s gone through an ion storm and shredded. There’s no two bits of data that connect but where everything in this city is totally alien, this is the only thing that has something that’s not.”
- Wookiee

Walker silently cursed, this was pretty much the worst case scenario. Not only was most of the senior staff down on the planet, but they had no communication. If something happened, they would have no way of knowing. Let alone a way to transport the Captain and the away team out of there.

But he couldn’t risk sending down another away team just because they hadn’t heard back from the Captain, at least not yet. So that left them just waiting.

“What do you mean by that? Or do you mean the structure they are in has signs of something that we actually understand?”

CWO Darach - COO

The ensign winced and tried again. “Sir, there looks to be some kind of signal, intermittent, like there was scanning happening. Near as I can tell, which is an educated guess, is that the waves or active scans radiated out like a radio wave and bounced off these crystal walls. You get enough bounces and enough waves and they intersect and get chopped up, they eventually reflect outside through that door and to the building surrounding and get chopped up even more. What we are getting is the fragments, a kind of .. scanning salad. If I were to guess .. someone is scanning but that is all we know.”
- Wookiee

Walker grimaced, that’s not what he wanted to hear. “So I guess the only useful part you are able to get is that there is most likely someone from Starfleet on the planets surface scanning, and may be in an area that we believe the away team to have gone into…

“Have you been able to learn anything more about the city itself? Or are the scans from the Manhattan getting scattered just as much? So we aren’t able to get anything useful.”

CWO Darach - COO

“Pretty much, sir,” the Ensign said.

Walker stood up and started pacing. He was having a hard time controlling his nervousness. It wasn’t a question on if he could run the ship or not, but that he hated feeling helpless. There just wasn’t anything he could do from up here in case of an emergency, except to just sit here and wait. He hated it.

CWO Darach - COO

“Being in closer I can’t really see much inside the buildings but I can get a more detailed power graphic from under them. It’s like the roots of a tree, tendrils going down into the mantle that are like liquid crystal in nature - I’d swear there was a dilithium component to it - but it’s converting thermal energy up like tree roots and feeding into the main trunk that runs into that temple under us. Enormous power.”
- Wookiee

OOC: Adding a cross post from the planet …
IC:
“Captain, I am going to check in with the Manhattan.” Shedda agreed, checking on the sun was necessary, but that would mean taking the Manhattan out of the protection of the city, even for just a short time to launch a probe. She didn’t like the prospect of doing so without the away team back on board. She stepped just outside the building and tapped her combadge. =/\=Mal’athar to Manhattan. Status report.=/\=

Mal’athar, XO

OOC: Gene, Darach had to take a step back. Could we get an NE to respond here?
-Jenn

=^= Lt Longbottom here, Commander. Ship is holding steady on station. We’re monitoring fuel utilization. We totally lost you once you went into the building. No signal or sensor reading on any of you. The building you are at is the stump of a vast power network extending under you. Most of the energy is staying there. Only a fraction is feeding the city itself. =^=
NL Tanner Longbottom

=/\=Aknowleged. We will make sure to check in regularly. Can you tell where the power source is coming from?=/\= Shedda looked back through the entrance way, careful not to enter the building and caught Cochrane’s gaze and waved him over. =/\=Longbottom let me know when you can read the Captain’s signal.=/\=

Mal’athar, XO

=^= All under you. We are reading strangeness that we are still trying to figure out. It’s like the source is there and big but that there is more. Basically though you are sitting on a kind of geothermal plume where these tendrils or roots tap into it like a tree to water. =^=

After a short wait .. Longbottom came back on. =^= There I have him. =^=
NL Longbottom

It seemed to take some time for the Manhattan to come up with some kind of definition for ‘strangeness’. At last he came back on. =^= The power source is several times greater than it seems like it should be. In exo-science at the Academy they brought up an example from the Enterprise D where they ran across a extradimensional vessel that was like a god to the people below. This seems similar. The scans see it then lose it again and something else is there, or not, but pieced together it is like several power sources merged into this one taproot. =^= A pause. =^= Like I said, only a fraction of the power is being used to disperse to the city but all of it is being used, going into the building you are in and it doesn’t come out but for a small amount. =^=
- Longbottom

Suddenly, the planet changed.

From a barren like world that was none too inviting suddenly, in the blink of an eye, as far as the eye (and sensor!) could see, there was a vast lush tropical forest. Humid mists rose from the tree canopy. Birds in small flocks flew, keeping close to cover, as larger almost pterodactyl like avians flew singly higher in the air. The size of the closest would make it as long from head to tail as the Manhattan’s nacelle. While not visible under the canopy of tall trees that went up to the edge of the city, surrounding it, sensors could tell there were multitudes of life forms.

There was no ‘temporal tick’ associated with this, no wave or energy wave. Whether that was because they were under the canopy of the city or not it was not readily easy to tell. But, thankfully, there was no negative effects.
- Wookiee

=/\=Mal’athar to Longbottom. Have you picked up any change in the power readings or sensors, environmental, temperal, anything?=/\=

Mal’athar, XO

=/\=Mal’athar to Longbottom. Have you picked up any change in the power readings or sensors, environmental, temperal, anything?=/\=

=^= Stand by =^= came the reply. =^= Scanning =^=

Longbottom came on. =^= Commander. We are seeing a prehistoric garden of a world out there. Logs show it just appeared. Not there one moment and there the next. There was no temporal change and no power changes. ish. I say ish as there does seem to be some intelligent life out there - reptiliod it must be because that is all the life we’re scanning - as there are power sources dotting the region. Small generators, but powerful. Fusion. From scans they power each a small town community that is clustered about it. That is it. Wait .. detecting a power spike inside the temple you are outside of .. =^=

  • Wookiee

Popping in the cross post …

=/\= Cochrane to Manhattan and Away team. New arrivals are in play. Manhattan, beam down a security team 50 meters west of my position outside the temple. Fully equipped. =/\=

There was a moment’s pause before Longbottom replied, his voice controlled but an octave higher. =^= Transmitting message to security, Captain. Look for them at the road junction at the end of the temple square =^=
- Wookiee

=/\=Mal’athar to bridge. Keep open comms with me and record everything.=/\=
Mal’athar, XO

There was a pause. =^= Aye, Sir =^= Longbottom said, then. =^= Sir, engineering is reporting a power drain. Low right now and our systems are stable. They are working to acquire the cause. They say it started right about the time your friends arrived. =^=
