“The fuzzy attracts Sugar Springtails, like a butterfly, to come and drink nectar and help spread pollen. It’s called Daydream Lilac because it is very soft like a pillow.” Shedda pointed to another one hanging down from a branch. “Watch.” She blew in the pettles and the flower closed up quickly and shivered, making the leaves around it rustle.

Shedda

Koro clapped and bounced on his toes and moved closer, blowing on the flower to make it react again. It of course hadn’t opened up again, so he frowned but he stared at it hard as if he could make it unfurl. “How long?” he asked.

“When the wind stills again, but you stirred it up, so…” Shedda looked around and spotted a flower higher up, still open. She lifted Koro up onto her shoulder so he could reach it. In fact there were several.

Shedda

With great glee, Koro blew on the petals and watched as they closed up, just like the other ones. He giggled. “I want one. But too cold in our rooms?” he asked Shedda.

Shedda looked at it. Botany wasn’t her area, but tropical plants could be kept at home with a UV light and mister. It took a lot of work. “Hmmm I don’t know. Maybe, but you would have to ask Mira if you can have a plant. Then we can talk to the botanists about a plant for you.”

“Really?” Koro said, his eyes lighting up.

“Maybe, if Mira says okay.” Something more simple might be better. One of the botanists should be able to help. She would ask Sair about it when they saw her.

She set him down and the first plant was beginning to open again. “But if not you can always come visit the ones here.” She pointed down the path, “Let us see what else is here.”

The glass house wasn’t deep but it did curve around the corner a little where there was a small water feature with water tricking down over a few rocks into a tiny pool. The water was pumped underneath and back up to keep it circulating. It wasn’t meant to hold more than a few aquatic plants and aid in keeping the humidity higher, but it added to feeling of a tropical space.

Koro crouched down at the edge of the shallow pool and touched his fingers to a bit of burbling water. “Mirane is sick,” he said, focused on how his fingers interrupted the flow of water.

Shedda sat down on the ground next to him. She knew Sair and her mother were both ill, but it must be getting worse for Kel. “She is? What’s wrong?” A gentle simple question to allow him to express what he was thinking. Shedda didn’t know how much Koro knew or understood about what was wrong.

Shedda

Koro switched back to his native tongue, having more words to work with. “Mira says Mirane’s body feels old, that it doesn’t work well.” He looked at Shedda. “That’s why she likes it in here. She’s feels cold a lot.”

~Koro

Shedda nodded gently. “It is very warm here.” Shedda knew, from first hand experience, that children often felt helpless. They saw problems but didn’t have the means or knowledge to help. She tapped out on a PaDD a message to Sair. She didn’t want to tread where she wasn’t welcome.

||Koro said your mother is often cold. He seems upset by it. Would it be alright for me to help find a way to help her? In his own small way? I was thinking of letting him pick a sweater or blanket to give her.||

Shedda

Sair replied within a minute. ||I think that’s a lovely idea. Her body has a hard time regulating temperature, so it’s a constant problem. So by all means, go ahead.||

Koro wiggled his fingers in the water for another minute before shaking his hand wildly in the air to dry it off, the water droplets making him giggle as they hit his face.
