The idea had spawned as a passing thought while sharing dinner with Sair. Now it had blossomed into a full blown plan. Shedda stood in the middle of the holodeck scene. A soft grassy lawn, dotted with various different chairs, blankets, floor pillows, even a couple of hammock chairs suspended from trees. A large white screen was stretched across a frame waiting for light and motion to be projected along with various speakers scattered around. There was a small counter with heating elements and several Manhattan imprinted insulated cups for the crew to prepare and partake of the various hot beverages that would be on offer. Sair and Shedda had asked the crew to bring with them or to prepare on the holodeck a favorite hot beverage of their choice to share with everyone else.

They had decided to show a movie and had asked the crew to vote on a few choices. They would be offering a more family friendly film first, for those with young children, and then something for the older teenagers and adults after. Shedda looked around. “What do you think Sair? Should we put a few activities off to the side for the kids, incase they get bored? That way no one has to leave if the children get restless?”

Sovrk nodded and knelt. He reguarded the boy with a curious look, it was clear he had not delt much with children of other species. He turned his attention back to the boy. “That’s very good. As your mother has said my name is Sovrk. It is a pleasure to meet you Koro. Now can you tell me how old are you?” His voice had a sudden gentleness when addressing Koro, whether it be a shock or not he knew not.

Shedda grinned back. Koro was such a bright and inquisitive kid.

Sorvk placed his hands on his knee, setting his cup in the grass beside his kneeling position.

“Three,” Koro said. He was still nestled up against Sair but his eyes were fixed on Sovrk with curiosity. “I’ll be four soon.”

Sovrk nodded. “A fine age.” He said softly.

“Are you a Vulcan?” Koro asked with unabashed openness.

Kaia stepped onto the scene, carrying a small (to humans) pot of something warm. She looked up at the table where all the goodies were gathered, then placed her pot on the ground with a small huff. A little label was stuck on it, reading “Fruit Cider with autumnal spices. (Safe for kids)”

She portioned out a cup for herself and walked over to where the XO and some other people were gathering. She leaned her head upwards to meet Shedda’s eyes. “Hey there! What movies are showing?” The Raka glanced briefly at Koro, glad she wasn’t the only small person in this conversation. She’d have to be careful. Some kids didn’t respect personal space, especially when a person was the same size or smaller than them, and covered in soft-looking fur.

Kaia, Engineer

Sovrk nodded to Kaia, “It is good to see you.” He remarked softly.

Moving past the table Kaia would see that there was a step stool built onto the side of the counter. Giving access to anyone who was in attendance. Shedda smiled at the engineer, “Kaia, I’m glad you could make it.” Seeing the pot on the ground, Shedda moved around and set it on the counter near the side with the steps, and then continued on behind the counter where she pulled out giant bowls of popcorn and started filling bags. “The first one is an animated film from Earth’s 21st century. The Croods. It’s about prehistoric man on Earth. Totally inaccurate, but amusing and fun for the children.”

Mal’athar, XO

Sovrk tilted his head to the side, and then looked towards the XO. “If it is an inaccurate telling of the events of the period, then what is it’s purpose?”

“Fun and entertainment,” Kaia spoke with a small smile. “Very few films tell ‘true’ stories.”

“Kaia is right. It is simply for entertainment. On Earth anyway, many stories are ‘based on’ fact but then the details are changed and altered for dramatic effect.”

Sair smiled at Kaia. “Good evening, Kaia,” she said, glad to be seeing more people outside of the usual circumstances.

Koro was being raised with the idea of showing a great deal of respect for the different sorts of people he’d encounter on the ship, and so while he was curious about the newest addition to the conversation, he was taking Kaia in with curiosity.

~Sair and Koro

After a few minutes more, Sovrk grabbed his cup and stood back up. He brushed at his knee that had been planted on the ground.

Kaia gave the small child a little wave of greeting, then went over to the supplied step-stool and used it to get a better view of the contents of the table. She picked out a few things from the table and stepped off again, giving Shedda a grateful smile. “I’ve not seen The Croods before, but I do know about it from some reading. That studio also made some very entertaining dragon films I sent to some of my younger cousins.”

Kaia, Engineer

“I know nothing about any of it,” Sair said with a laugh. “I’m here for the experience.”

Koro smiled at Kaia and moved over to the table, peering up at the items near the edge he could see. “My mirane might get hungry. We need a snack for her.” He turned towards Sair. “Mira, what can she have?”

Sair moved over and eyed the offerings. “Did she ask for anything specific?”

“Something sweet,” Koro said.

Songz grinned and looked at Kaia, giving the Raka a small wink. “Hmmm, Kaia, what do you think, do we have anything sweet for Koro here to take to his grandmother?”

~The Songz family

Kaia considered the question, looking at the selection of goodies, having returned to ground level and now standing next to Koro. “Well, can I tell you a secret, Koro?”

After a moment, she leaned in slightly and spoke in a stage whisper, “I can’t taste sweet things.”

Kaia, Engineer

“Really?” Koro said, his brown eyes wide with curiosity.

Kaia nodded. “You’ll have to ask someone else for advice, I couldn’t tell you what the best sweet things are.”

Sovrk fell silent. He continued to watch the others as he sipped on his drink.

Shedda looked around, there was a fairly decent crowd now. She caught Sair’s eye and nodded. “Alright, if everyone will grab a spot, drinks, or snacks we’re going to start the movie.” The ambient light lowered and after giving everyone a couple minutes to get settled the large screen brightened as colors and images began to play across it. The Croods began to play. “Would you like anything to eat, Sovrk?”

Mal’athar, XO

Sair grabbed some food and took her drink back over to where her mother was wrapped in a blanket in a chair. Koro came racing behind her and snuggled in to Sair, making her smile. She kissed the top of his head and exchanged a look with her mother, who beamed back at her. She didn’t look well tonight, but as always Kel put on a brave mask.

Kaia didn’t follow Sair or her family, instead making her way over to a tree with low branches and clambering up like a monkey into the tree, her tail wrapping around one of the branches for stability while her hands gripped the plate of goodies - mostly little bits of meat and cheeses, with a fruit or two. There she sat as the film began. A small purr escaped her when the Macawnivore appeared, and she paid closer attention after that.

Kaia, Engineer

Sovrk decided to grab a bag of popcorn. He seperated off giving the others an nod before he himself found a different tree. The Vulcan setteled beneath the tree, using the trunk as a backrest of sorts. He settled in and watched mostly quietly except for the small sounds of him munching on popcorn.
