Eyes wide, Koro gazed intently at Harv. “Really?” He was still skeptical that the yucky tasting thing was the same thing he just ate, but he seemed willing to try to beleive.

Shedda was very certain that the whole crew would mutiny against her if she asked Harv if he’d actually ever met a kitchen magician. She would never admit it, but Harv could do some pretty impressive things with food. She looked at Koro, “And magic food does more than just fill your belly. Just like Mira told you, it can make you feel better when you’re sad, but it can also make you happy, or bring back memories. It can even help you make new friends.”

Shedda

Her shifted his brown eyes to Shedda and was suddenly pensive. “It won’t make Mirane better, but it could make her happy?”

Harv set his hand lightly on the boy’s shoulder and he said “Absolutely. And… if you help do the food magic… I bet it would work even better. What’dya think, Nugget? Think you might have what it takes to be a kitchen magician?”

Harv

Koro seemed to be seriously considering this option and giving it the thought it clearly required.

Shedda knelt down and took both his hands and gave them a little squeeze. “Chef Harv is right. If you help with the magic, it will make her very happy. You can do that for her, and then give her the shawl you picked. Do you want to do that?” Shedda’s heart went out to him. Koro was still very young and losing one of the most important people in his life. She knew it was hard for him.

Shedda

He nodded eagerly but then leaned in towards her. “But Shedda? I’m hungry. Can I have a snack first?” he asked, his little tummy gurgling after all his activity so far. It had been a fun but busy day so far. He wasn’t generally a whiny child but he was on the edge of pouting.

Shedda glanced up at Harv with a smirk. She had put off his snack long enough apparently. Then looked back at Koro. The fruit they had tried in the garden had long since been burned through. “Yes, you can have a snack. What do you want?” She stood in one fluid movement.

Shedda

Have smiled and said “Never trust a skinny cook, Koro. Ever.” and he deftly moved through the kitchen and in under a minute had a plate with a small sandwich on it. “Here you go. Everything there was made right here by me.” The sandwich had dark bread with a sweet aroma, and a filling of some kind of fruit and nut spread. “Eat up, and then we’ll do some more magic.” He looked at Shedda and said “How about you, Commander? Hungry?”

Harv

Koro eyed the food with curiosity and took a sniff. It smelled interesting and so he took an experimental bite. And then another as he liked whatever this was. It was strange but yummy!

Shedda laughed very softly as she watched Koro eye the sandwich suspiciously and then begin to devour it. “Shedda, please. I’m off duty.” She looked over at Harv. Well how was she supposed to say no with Koro standing right there? She grinned, finding the situation extremely amusing. “That would be much appreciated. Thank you.”

Shedda

Harv nodded once and went to work. In a slightly longer time than it took to make Koro’s sandwich, he had another sandwich made up. A different bread, slightly more firm than Koro’s, held some kind of cold deli salad with various vegetables on top; all held together with two large toothpicks.

Harv

“This looks delightful. Thank you Harv,” apparently Shedda was on her very best, exceptional behavior with her young friend around, or perhaps she was simply relaxed. “Come on Koro let’s sit at a table. After you can come learn more of Harv’s magic.” She led the way back out of the kitchen. She sat at the table and tried bot to be dubious about the sandwich. It looked complicated. She was however pleasantly surprised that it had a strong flavor but not too many of them. The bread also reminded her of home.

Shedda

Koro set his sandwich on the table, clambered back into a chair, and continued munching on his lunch. He looked out the windows every so once in awhile between bites, but mostly he was just focused on eating. About three-quarters through, Koro looked up at Shedda with a curious look. “Shedda, I got Mirane a present. Could I do something for Mira too? And maybe Surane when he gets here?”
