“We are all on battery powered vehicles. There are some rare earths that are not so rare on one of our moons that are quite efficient in battery construction and in both storage and what power can be brought out in the energy transaction shall we say.” Tov sat and put his hands on the wheel. There was a faint hum as it powered up. On the screen on a kind of heads up display could be seen. “Controls are voice operated or off the steering console. It is, as well, self driving.” He spoke into the air. “Map plot and execute to Thermal Station Yekut. Optimum path.” Moments later it drove off with them.
- Tov

Kaia watched out the windows, her eyes flicking quickly from one roadside sight to another with a lot of energy. She looked forward to being able to talk about this adventure with Kiama later.

Kaia, Engineer (aCE, apparently :P )

<Bump>

Their path took them from the inner city onto a major artery that let them increase speed and soon they were outside the city and traveling through mixed land use. The majority had elements of farming. The hills were either left forested with tall thin trees or had been cleared and terraced for vine like crops. The roadtops were not the usual ‘concrete’ or ‘asphalt’ but had a smoother almost plastic look to them. Already with the vehicle the travel was mostly soundless; there was no noticeable road noise. Tov sped up. Here and there were posted signage defining speed or upcoming turnoffs. With the vehicle on automatic pilot it remained well within that speed range.

“Tell me about your work on your ship,” Tov asked. “What kinds of things do you actually do? Over the centuries some have toyed with automating more and more things to the point that there would be so little for anyone to meaningfully do. In taking this level of technology we have tried to create a balance of efficiency while still allowing the people to be able to pursue the things they desire.”
- Tov

“Well, I do not know about the others, but my duties mostly include crawling into places no one else can reach and fixing small things,” Kaia said with a grin, baring her teeth for a moment. She turned towards the window again, watching the scenery go by. “When I am not doing that, I generally help with other aspects of engine maintenance. And I get to be a bridge officer sometimes. That is the best, because then I know what is causing the problems in engineering,” she said with a cheeky grin towards her DH.

Kaia, Engineer

Tov laughed. “Always nice to know what is going on and be in the front seat of things,” he said. The countryside streamed past them, the vehicle on auto-drive knowing what it was supposed to be doing. He turned thoughtful for a moment. “Forgive me in this next question. Over the centuries we have had to pull back on greater automation and robotics. Furthering ahead with nano-technology is another thing. I would have thought that you would have a much greater artificial intelligence program with robotics and other things that would, well, not require you to go crawling around in small spaces.”

Kaia would notice first, as Tov was looking at her, that not too far ahead on the road there stood a Gravinian girl perhaps about 10 standing in their way and they were speeding toward her!

Kaia let out an expletive that was very much outside her regular vocabulary and began to almost screech. “Computer stop the vehicle! Collision imminent!!” She exclaimed, nearly jumping out of her seat to grab Tov’s face in her hands and turn it to force him to notice the child on the road.

Kaia, Panicky Engineer

“What?!” Tov managed to get out as his head swung forward, eyes wide, helped by Kaia. He grasped the wheel even as the computer was voicing =^= There are no .. =^= and turned the wheel, ramming the brakes. The car screeched and, almost in slow motion came up on two wheels but didn’t stop there, careening toward the side of the road. Automatic systems initiated where the overhead dome snapped up into place as the vehicle flipped and scraped upside down. As it hit a ridge at the edge of the road it flipped, careening end over end. Somewhere in there the dome smashed.

Tov was thrown out, as was Kaia. Wynter was held in his webbing as the car came to rest in a field on its side. Smokey tendrils wafted upward, but, thankfully, nothing was catching fire. Kaia was caught in a hedgerow that helped break her fall. Tov would be found laying in a depression not far off the road.

OOC:
Whoever posts next would come to consciousness first …
Kaia would have cuts and bruises and a broken wrist amongst a slew of bruises.
Wynter would come out of it with a nasty concussion and bump on the head and a cuts along his cheek from the shattered dome, but the safety features of the vehicle had saved him the worst.
Tov would be in the worst shape with broken bones and internal injuries.

Opening his eyes slowly, Max was confused as the world seemed to be upside down, his neck stretched to one side uncomfortably. Trying to blink away the fog and confusion he lifted his head, seeing the world partially right itself but not like it should have been. Without being able to remember the past moments at that time, he muttered “Jasmine?” then his hands felt at the tight straps around his chest holding him in place.

He realized now that he was horizontal, the ground off below him and the knowledge that the ground should not be there began to bring broken memories back amongst the confusion. For moments his hands felt at the webbing until they found the latch, and undoing this he unceremoniously dropped sideways to the ground in an awkward heap before rolling to the side and pushing himself to his feet. His head throbbed and standing did not make the confusion or dizzyness retreat, in fact it just seemed to make it worse as he began to walk away from the vehicle, turning to look at it as he tried to remember what was happening.

The memories came back in a rush, which confused him more. “Kaia!” he shouted, and then turned looking for the road and the girl that had been standing on it, trying to place one foot in front of the other as he made his way towards the highway looking for Tov, Kaia and the girl.

Lt Cmdr Wynter, CE

There was no sign of the girl. The path and skid marks and scattered debris showed the path of the vehicle quite clearly.

Kaia came to consciousness with a groan of pain. Raka were not a resilient or hardy race. She felt bruised all over, and could sharply feel several places where the hedges had ‘broken’ her fall and broken her skin in the process. She could distinctly feel the hot, searing pain in her left wrist that signalled a broken bone and boy, oh boy did that hurt. She reached for her comm-badge with her right hand and painfully rolled onto her side as she spoke. =^=Ensign Kaia to… Manhattan. Vehicle crash. Send… help.=^=

She tried to stand, but everything hurt far too much. Doing a quick check of her condition, it appeared she had gotten off fairly well… only the wrist was broken. She was certain that angle was not natural for a wrist, but at least she was alive. And conscious. The same might not be said for Tov, she realized as she looked at the multiple oddly angled limbs. He was splayed on the ground not too far, at least. She dragged herself over to him, pulling herself up onto all fours and limping over on her three intact limbs. It was easier than trying to stand up all the way.

This is bad. Tov was very hurt. And she had much less first aid training than she needed to have in this situation. She heard the CE’s call from back where the car still was. Being flung out of the vehicle had put her and Tov at a distance from the car. “Max!” she called. Not a time for formalities.

Kaia, Engineer

=^= Ensign this is Darach. We read you. What happened? =^=

WO Darach - COO

Hearing the response, Kaia tapped her badge again. Her voice was a little off, probably because of all the adrenaline-like-chemical running through her system. =^=Someone on the road. Veered to avoid and the car went off the side. Gravenite badly hurt. Broken wrist for me. I have not seen Max yet but I heard him shouting.=^=

Kaia

Tov was pale even for a Graven native who was rather purple. Where he had an abrasion along one cheek a blueish ooze could be seen spreading slowly. His body spasmed and a small pained moan escaped from his throat, though he was not conscious.

Kaia shouted out for Max again, not sure what to do. “MAX?!” She didn’t even know if they were allowed to be beamed out, as per the rules of Graven XII. She was scared, worried for Tov, hurting and panicked, wondering who that girl had been on the road and why the car, as far as she could tell, hadn’t detected the presence of the child.

Kaia, Eng

Still trying to blink away the fog that was clouding his thoughts, Max pulled the tricorder out of the pouch on his waist and began to scan for life signs from the girl and the others. Hopefully, she had not been hit and thrown further away he couldn’t see. Maybe she was just hiding.

He looked up as he heard Kaia’s call. “I’m here,” he called back. “I can’t find the girl. Are you alright?”

Lt Cmdr Wynter, CE

There were no other life signs present besides theirs.

As much as it was a bit foggy on exact distancing it ‘looked’ like the car had veered off and lost control before reaching where she was seen, though not by much.

“Did not feel a thump. Car did not detect her… Broken something,” she was cradling her broken arm. “Tov is in bad condition.”

Kaia, ENG

=^= Ensign, see if you can find the Commander. We’ll work on getting you out of there ASAP. Standby. =^=

WO Darach - COO

Kaia tapped her comm. =^=Max is nearby. Not sure where exactly.^=

Kaia, Eng

Wookiee

=^= Alright Ensign. We’ve got permission to beam you, the Commander and the Gravenite up to the Manhattan. We’ll lock onto the Commander’s commbadge, but position yourself next to the Gravenite so we can beam you both up. Signal us when you are ready. =^=
