“That makes sense. We also have empathic abilities, but it does not connect to non-sentient beings of our planet. Or anyone outside of Galdor, sentient or not. Complex animals, we can slightly sense their desires or needs - hunger, sleepiness, energy levels, and such. And they can sense our intentions, as far as they are able to comprehend. That is what makes the Vek such good hunting companions, as we are able to communicate wordlessly with them during the hunt. They are very intelligent animals. I was thinking, perhaps a fish. Something without too much in the way of emotional energy requirements.”

Kiama nodded here and there as she listened to Kaia while walking towards the cafeteria. “A fish sounds nice. And those held as pets are always very pretty to look at. Not to mention that you don’t have to worry about a fish tearing your quarters apart while you’re on duty or escaping or something,” she said with a wink. “Any idea what kind of fish you’d like best?”

Kaia nodded, immediately looking very excited to share. “There is this Earth fish called a ‘Beta,’ and it is such a beautiful fish. They have long, trailing fins and they can be this vibrant blue colour. And they are solitary too so I don’t have to worry about getting it a companion fish! Of course… Getting it to the Manhattan might be an ordeal. I wonder if they can put a fish in stasis…?”

“If calibrated correctly, it may be possible,” Kiama said thoughtfully. “I’m sure there is a good way to get the fish here safely.” She pursed her lips slightly as she tried to recall everything she knew about ornamental fish.

“I will look into it,” Kaia said with a small smile. She reached over and grabbed Kiama’s sleeve. “I am very happy to have you as a friend, Kiama Naim. You have brought joy to my life that I had not known since arriving on this ship.”

Placing her other hand on top of Kaia’s, Kiama said with a tender smile, “I’m very happy to have you as a friend as well. It was a lucky and wonderful coincidence that you basically stumbled into my quarters the day I arrived.”

Kaia giggled. “Hah. I would say sorry but I am very happy I did that. So I will not apologize!” She said, almost cheekily, pulling her hand away and stepping through the door into the turbolift.

“Good,” Kiama replied with a soft laugh as she followed Kaia into the turbolift. It didn’t take long till they arrived on the deck they wanted to get to and she led the way off the lift. She then let Kaia take the lead again. “Tell me, what do you like best about being in Starfleet in general and on the Manhattan in particular?” she asked out of the blue.
