“Ensign Kaia,” Max said and waved her over. “Perfect timing, tell me, what’s your opinion on Chillies? Those spicy vegetables, you know? Any experience in making them really grow well?” Despite the fact he was kidding, his face was perfectly straight and he seemed like it was a purely professional work question, although the glint in his eyes betrayed him to anyone that new him more than just in passing.
Lt Cmdr Wynter, CE
“I am not familiar with that vegetable,” Kaia replied frankly. “You should know my people do not eat much, if any, plant material. It gives us bad gas and… other gastrointestinal problems.” She answered his kidding question with an answer that provided far more information than he asked for.
“Well with the kind of chillies I’m talking about, everybody is bound to get gastrointestinal problems if done right,” he grinned in reply. Max had always been a salt of the earth type of Engineer and that kind of conversation around the dinner table had never phased him. The looks Jasmine gave him when he did it phased him far more than the actual topic of conversation.
“Not even for flavour and seasoning?” Max asked Kaia. “I mean, your people have evolved more from the whole rip the meat off the bone still bloody, right? Maybe?”
Lt Cmdr Wynter, CE
“We cook our meat. And we substitute it with other proteins when available. But the Raka are still hypercarnivores. A rarity among humanoid species, I know. We do not tend to add spices or flavours to our food. We do not have the most refined sense of taste so such efforts are… Somewhat wasted on us.”
“Unfortunate,” Faye said. “But to each their own. And there is something to be said for fire roasted things, including meat. Cooking over an open flame can be it’s own flavour enhancer, at least I always found that.”
~Faye Calloway, Data Specialist
Kiama chuckles softly as she listend to the exchange, while make a mental note that she should try something roasted over a fire at some point. Even though she felt like she couldn’t really contribute much to this part of the conversation, she didn’t feel out of place or bored. On the contrary, listening to the three of them made her feel happy.

“But, spice!” Max grinned and then sighed. Flavour was one of his small pleasures and something he enjoyed with childlike glee. “Alright so we have the irrigation system and lighting on the go, Faye is there anything else you need from us?”
Max Wynter, CE
Faye surveyed the space and shrugged. “Not so much. Just to finish the irrigation. But I was thinking that we should create a locked off envionrmental program for the sapce and have it coded to only a few individuals. The last thing I need is someone deciding they’re missing their favourite tropical environment and asking the computer to up the temp a few degrees. I want to simulate seasons to a small extent but it does need to be somewhat level.”
~Faye Calloway, Data Scientist
Kiama nodded here and there while listening closely. She then said, “That makes sense.” Smiling broadly at Faye she continued, “I can’t wait to see what it’ll look like when it’s all finished. And if you need anything from me or if I can help in some way let me know.”
~Lt. jg. Naim, aCSO
“Well, we can add it to the plan for sure,” Max nodded, then dropped the PaDD into the case at his hip. “It’s coming along nicely Faye, I’m going to head back to Engineering and check on the other work we have going. Let me know if you need anything further.” Giving the three a smile, he turned for the doors.
