She nodded and raised her glass. “To not being pulled in million directs,” she nodded and sipped her wine. “Mmmm nice choice. Makes me curious what dinner will be.” Looking at him as she set her glass down, she smiled once more. “I’m glad you enjoyed yourself last night.” She nodded to the PaDD. “If you want this to be a ‘working dinner’, please don’t let me stop you. I know duties come first. I just this might be a nicer choice than eating at your desk, yet again.”

Cochrane chuckled. “No. That can wait. Trust me.” and he laughed again. “And knowing Harv, his ‘simple fare’ probably starts with some exotic meat neither of us have ever heard of.” and he took a drink. “But it will be good!” and he chuckled.

Cochrane, CO

“So I take it specifically telling him ‘not’ to make a big deal means he probably did just the opposite?” She bit back a laugh. “It wasn’t my intention, I swear. I told him to just pick something you loved and rarely got. I just wanted you to get a moment to relax and see a different part of your ship. Seems I was mistaken on both counts this evening.” She laughed realizing the faire wouldn’t be ‘simple’. And that she was sitting, most likely, where his date last night had sat.

“I’m sure it will be simple… by his definition.” and he chuckled again. “Heard that, Skipper.” said the Chef coming around the corner. In his hand was a small covered dish and two small plates. Setting a plate in front of each and then the dish in the center, he lifted the lid. “Andillian crab stuffed mushrooms with chili sauce. Enjoy.” and he walked away.

Cochrane looked at the dish and grinned. “You know… I half believe that Harv just makes up names for places the food comes from.” and he chuckled. The dish smelled both earthy and like the ocean, with a strong undercurrent of herb and garlic.

Raye covered her mouth to stifle the giggles as Harv came around the corner. As the man set the dish down, the young woman dropped her hand and smiled up with a charming, “Thank you, Harv. It looks delicious,” just as he walked off. She leaned over and whispered a bit loudly, “I believe we were busted.”

Looking to the Captain, she smiled. “If this is simple, I’m scared what we’d have gotten if I had asked him to ‘make it a special occasion’.” She laughed slightly and moved to place two of the morsels on her plate. “They smell amazing, wherever they are from.”

“I think the man could make Bolian dishes palatable, actually.” and he laughed. Scooping up two, he set them on Raye’s plate before serving himself. “So I don’t think we ever really spoke about ourselves with each other. Tell me about you, Raye. How did one such as you come to be?” he asked and took a bite.

Cochrane, CO

She moved her hand, smiling with a polite nod, as he set the small bits on her plate. “Thank you. And I bet he could, at that,” she added, to his comment on the Chef’s skills.

When asked how she came to be, she smiled. “Why, Cochrane,” she tsked teasing and shook her head with a sly grin. “If you aren’t sure how I came to be, then you need to get out for more than merely lunch and dinner occasionally.” She laughed then continued so he didn’t have to respond, or rather, couldn’t respond and embarrass her.

“I am here because I want to make a difference. I know that we are the face of the Federation and we need to be a better slice of the representation of who we are as humans. I am hoping, when those times come, that I can prove I am part of that slice. What about you? I know your favorite color, and food, and hobby. But why are you here?” She gestured out the window, “In a chair, with a large family that looks up to you, leading us into the unknown?”

He looked out the window and said “I hope this answer goes better than the last time someone asked me this.” and he chuckled and took a sip of wine.

Looking back at her he said “My family has a long tradition of service, from back when there used to be countries to now. When my mother had her little ‘incident’, which I am sure you are more than a bit aware of, my twin sister and I took that a bit hard. We both thought… think… that what she did tainted our legacy. So, we both are trying to erase that mark… or at least take it from a black mark to a footnote.”

Cochrane, CO

She smiled. “I remember. And honestly, Cochrane, with what you’ve done so far, you have earned your own legacy and have no need to fear the one you came from.” She took a bite of the appetizer and smiled. “Yeah, it’s amazing,” she laughed. “Who’d have believed Andillian crabs tasted so good.” She bit into the other one and grabbed her napkin to catch the chili sauce that started to run down her chin. “And so… messy…” she laughed.

He chuckled and said “I see we save the good table manners for decent company.” and he laughed. Taking another bite, he chewed slowly and watched her for a moment. Taking a drink, he said “So why no Mr. Anders, then?” <e>

She smiled and shrugged, but the smile was slightly dimmer. “There was… or almost was… once.” She shook it off and her smile brightened once more as she reached for another mushroom. “Apparently, Honey, I’m going out, into space. Don’t hold dinner. Doesn’t go over too well with some folks. And I don’t like ultimatums.”

He looked at her and nodded. “I’ll tell you my almost was if you tell me yours.” The words were humorous, but the delivery was friendly without being too prying. At that moment, Harv arrived with two domed plates. He set them on the edge of the table, took the appetizers plates away and set them on a cart, and then slid a plate in front of each. “Bon appetit.” he said and lifted the covers to reveal: beer battered fish and chips, grilled tomatoes half, and mushy peas. A bottle of cider vinegar appeared from Harv’s apron and settled between the two diners. “Be right back with the pints.” and he left and soon returned with two pint glasses of a super dark liquid with a khaki foam on top. “Guinness, Skipper. My compliments.” and he winked at Cochrane and smiled.

Alex looked at the dish and the beer and simply said “Harv… you magnificent bastard you… thank you. This is perfect.” and he held out his hand to Harv who took it and said “Of course, Captain. My pleasure.” and he smiled at Cochrane and then looked at Raye and nodded and then walked back to the kitchen.

Cochrane, CO

“Sure.” She said and smiled at his offering.

When dinner arrived, she pulled her napkin back and set her hands in her lap to let Harv do the serving. At the reveal, she laughed. “It’s perfect, Harv.” The Captain’s handshake and Harv’s nod pleased her to no end. As he walked away after setting the Guinesses down, Raye smiled. “So much better than some weird saucy something or other that looks like it belongs on a Risa resort table instead of a mess hall one.” She lifted her mug and held it towards him. “My turn… to exploration in space with the best family we will never choose.” She winked, “And the man who will guide us there.”

He chuckled and touched his glass to hers. “Nope, I just make sure we dont hit anything on the way.” and he smiled. “At least I hope so… first time in the big chair and all.” and he laughed and took a drink of the Guinness and locked the foam from his lip. “By all the stars in heaven… that is so good.” and he picked up the vinegar and doused the fish and fries.

Cochrane, CO

“Maybe I should have just toasted to ‘not crashing’.” She laughed and took a drink. Her own pleasure sound rolling up her throat. “Lords… I had forgotten. Haven’t had it since Earth. Far too long ago.” She waited till he was done with the vinegar and used it herself, though not quite as generously. “I don’t think I could have asked for better. I’m so glad he knows your likes.” She laughed.

After a few bites of fish and a fries for them both. She was nibbling a fry and looked at him. “Well, tit for tat. Would you like me to go first? Or you want to?”
