“Hypothetically?” and he laughed. “Well, hypothetically I would play the guitar, the bass guitar, upright bass, piano, and saxophone. Those I would be comfortable with. I’m learning the Vulcan harp, but I’m not that good at it. But my mother, well, step-mother technically, is amazing on it; so I learn from her when I see her.”

“That’s really nice,” Faye said genuinely. “I’d love to hear that sometime. Harps, lyres and guitars remind me of good days on Tracken.” It was hard to remember sometime that there had actually been good days on that colony, but for the most time when Faye was really young she had experienced nothing but the idyllic life of hard work and community camaraderie. Maybe that was why this ship was growing on her. It was the closest thing to that life that she had ever come since.

Twirling her half empty wine glass in her fingertips, she was thoughtful. “Hey, I was meaning to ask you if V’astur was going to be releasing another book of poems anytime soon.” She was pretty sure she had shocked him during that first meeting when she had revealed she not only had read his step-mother’s work but actually liked its abstract form and meaning. But then again, her time with the Reunification Movement had changed a lot of things for her and one was an appreciation of poetry.

He smiled and said “Next month, actually. If you want, you can read it now. She sent me an advanced copy, I’m sure she’d love to know what your thoughts are. I’ll send it to you when I get back to my quarters.”

Her normally stormy eyes lit up and Faye set her glass down before she pointed at him. “Yes, absolutely. Do that!” She rubbed her hands together. “Ahh, an advanced copy. Now I feel special.” Not that expected V’astur to care one way or another about what Faye really thought about it, but at the same time she didn’t know the woman personally and even the chance to exchange thoughts with such an engaged and brilliant mind actually sort of thrilled Faye.

Cochrane laughed. “I think you are more excited than I was.” and he laughed again. “I’ll make sure she knows you are a fan. She always gets enjoyment from the knowledge that people like her work.”

Faye had to admit that she liked it when he laughed. It lit up his face wonderfully and it was good to seem him relax. goodness knows his job could be tough to set aside for the moment but he seemed to be doing quite well when needed tonight. “Well then, I’ll be sure to give it a thorough reading,” she said with a nod. “And she can thank a rather elderly Vulcan for introducing me to her work. He told me he thought it would help give me perspective.” She leaned in towards him slightly. “Personally I just think he could see right through me and he knew I had been going through a rough time. When you’re lost, sometimes the oddest things can bring clarity,” she said with a soft smile.

“Too true, Faye. And I am sure Mom will be very pleased to know her work brought you some… perspective.” and he smiled. “You know, for as stoic and even as Vulcans are, I dont think I have ever met a people more capable of experiencing emotions. And when she is pleased, she lights up a room.” and he chuckled and took a drink.

“So where are your other two problem children? I know they do late, but…” and he laughed good-naturedly.
