(Takes place after “Deja Vu… Dinner and a Chat” with Raye and Cochrane)
Raye had headed back to her room after dinner with Cochrane. It had gone particularly well and she was glad they had done it. She changed and took a shower and was soon sitting on her couch relaxing. She hadn’t been settled in her room for more than an hour before she couldn’t resist it anymore. “I gotta know..” she whispered to herself and moved to her desk.
Five minutes later she was typing in an query as to who and what the cook calling himself ‘Harv’ was all about. He was far too close to the Captain to not be someone who had followed the CO around a while. She was a Diplomat… that meant curious.
(Curiosity killed the… ummmmm)
As she did a search of the name, the computer beeped and said =^= One entry matching that name. Harv, Char’les. Bajoran. Occupation: Chef. Born: Bajor. Died: Denev VI, star ship destruction. Details follow. =^= What came next read like something out of a holovid. Gangsters. Innocence lost. Revenge. Murder. And all of it surrounding a dead man named Harv. The picture on her view screen was not the same man; and a quick search did show the name, while not at all common, was not necessarily unique.
Raye frowned. Everything ‘fit’ what she knew of the man in the galley. That is, except the pic. That wasn’t the Harv she and the Manny knew as the Captain’s Chef. She made several more inquiries and all she got was more of the same. The man in the Mess was Harv in all ways but his looks. It made Raye extremely unease. If it hadn’t been so late, she would have sought out the Captain then and there. Instead, she transferred all the info she had to a personal and private file and turned off her console. “Lights to ten percent,” she called out. The lights dimmed to nearly off. It was about as much light as a couple candles would have tossed on the walls.
She turned in her chair and gazed out the window across the room and stared into space. The Harv on the Manhattan was entirely too close to the Captain. If he wasn’t who he had said he was, it was the Captain who needed to know. To be informed and safe.
Half an hour later, she sighed, killed the lights completely and went to bed. It troubled her a bit more than she had planned and her sleep was restless.
- * The next morning she got a comm about the update on the young diplomat she had station oriented on the station a couple weeks prior. It was nearly lunch before she had a chance to seek the whereabouts of the Captain. She took off from her room, PaDD in hand with the files on it to show him.
The Captain was on the bridge, and when she arrived he was standing and speaking with a humanoid serpent-looking being on the main veiwer. “Chancellor, it was our pleasure to assist. On behalf of the Manhattan and her viewer., we were happy the brood-ship was unharmed by the nebula expansion and we were nearby to assist. Our best to your people.” and the serpent head bowed and the screen went blank. Cochrane turned to sit and saw Raye and said “Ms. Anders. Nice of you to stop by.” and he sat down and said “To what do we owe the pleasure today?”in a friendly manner.
She remained silent just inside the lift, her hands clasped before her holding the PaDD. As the comm was completed, she stepped towards Cochrane and smiled. “I… I merely came to see how you were. And I have some information I thought you would like to see.” She remained smiling and cordial, bordering on professional, as she handed him the PaDD as if handing him a diplomatic pouch.
He nodded and waved her over and took the PaDD and began reading. Inside of two seconds he stopped reading and said “Actually, I was just about to have lunch. Let me peruse this in the Ready Room, shall we. Lieutenant Bar’x, you have the conn.” and a tall Vulxan stepped forward. “Aye, Captain.” Cochrane walked over and entered the Ready Room and went behind the desk and sat. He waited for the door to close and then looked at Raye. =^= Computer. Erase all search history pertaining to Char’les Harv from the main core and all backup files. Authorization Cochrane Gamma Phi Delta Seven Seven Eight Three.=^= and there was a pause and then a chirp. “Ms. Anders. Never dig, never ask, and never search for that name again. That’s an order. Do you understand me?” His face was stern and unflinching, and his voice brook no argument.
She frowned as he ordered the erasure. “Then you know…” she moved to sit to his right at the next chair. “I was concerned. That’s all, Alex. I honestly wasn’t looking to cause grief.” She wasn’t simpering, but her apology was sincere.
“Do you understand me, Raye?” was all he said in return.
She frowned. Whatever foundation she thought she had laid the night before in hopes of pursuing him, she felt it was gone again. “Yes, Sir.” She looked at him a long moment. Finally breaking the gaze, she rose, “I’ll just go… sorry to have bothered you, Captain.”
Cochrane nodded and said “Always glad to chat, Ms. Anders.” and he stood and walked to the door, letting it slide open and allowing her to exit first. “Have a good day. Thank you for stopping by.” he said nonchalantly and went back to the Center Chair.
Raye proceeded him out the door. Her smile back on her face, the ever ready diplomat. “Thank you, sir. You have a good afternoon as well, Captain.” She nodded to a couple other folks and departed the bridge.
Since it was just before the lunch hour, she headed for the mess.
Inside she saw Harv and paused to grab herself a drink before catching him heading back into the kitchen. “Harv..?” She stepped towards him and made sure they wouldn’t be heard. Her face was solemn and her voice was sincere.
“I didn’t realize what I’d done till it was too late. I’m terribly sorry for whatever trouble it caused or will cause. Again, I’m sorry I looked you up at all.” Before he could answer, she spun on her heels and headed to her room.
Less than a minute later, Cochrane walked off the bridge, went straight to the Mess and walked in the kitchen. He was in there for some time. He then walked out, his jaw clenched and his face indicating now was not the time. He stepped onto the bridge and said “Comms. Get me a secure channel to Star Fleet Intelligence. My office.” and he disappeared behind the Ready Room doors.
Later that evening, Raye showed up on the bridge with a dinner tray. Smiling to those who’d gotten used to seeing her, she chimed the Captain’s Office.
As the door owned, she stepped in, letting it close behind her. She smiled softly at him and set the tray on the edge of the desk. “I promised I’d always be here, Alex. I’ll let you eat. And, I’m sorry. Next time, I’ll come to you first.” The look she gave him was as close to a kiss as she’d get before turning to head out the way she came.
(In hot water lol)
Cochrane remained silent as she spoke and as she turned to leave. As the doors slid closed he sighed heavily and, quietly to himself, said “I certainly hope so.”
The next morning Raye woke up and worked thru her reports and missives. As she was about to finish, a chirp went off that an incoming urgent message had arrived.
As she read, she sighed…

Deputy Director, Federation Diplomatic Corps
She shook her head and let out an exasperated growl. “Ok! Ok! I get the point…ggeessshhhh…”
She was going to eat lunch in her room but decided she needed a change of scenery. It was almost fifteen hundred and she was starving.
A few moments later she walked into the mess where she and Cochrane had enjoyed a pleasant dinner a couple nights ago. She got a drink and a small bowl of salad, went to a window seat and watched the darkness of space while enjoying the silence of the nearly empty dining room. She kept her back to the door so no one would think she was up for company.
A bowl of a wonderful smelling something landed with a light thud next to her salad, and the form of the Chef came around her shoulder. “I’ve seen that look before.” and he took off his bandanna from his bald head and sat heavily into the chair opposite her. “That’s the ‘I just got my butt handed to me’ look. And I can only assume that probably has something to do with me. Yeah… sorry about that.”
She jumped slightly as the bowl landed. The smell made her smile a little.
As the chef sat down and apologized, she shook her head. “You don’t need to apologize. My curiosity got the best of me. You seemed so close to Ale.. the Captain, I was curious who you were. Is my fault. I just hope I didn’t mess things up for you.” She smiled slightly. “And I’m sure you don’t, but if you ever need anything, please ask. I may put my nose in places it doesn’t belong, but I still have connections if needed.” She pulled the bowl closer and sniffed it with approval. “I just hope you don’t have to leave.”
He looked around at the empty mess hall. He then leaned back and said “Skipper is my baby sitter, keeps the word from getting out. And if I was gonna have to, I’d probably be gone by now. I hope I get to stay. I like this ship. And the crew deserves good food.” and he looked at her. “So what did you do?”
