After a discrete computer inquiry from her quarters to the whereabouts of the Captain, Raye headed for the mess hall and two dinner trays with food, drink and dessert on them.

=^= The Captain is in the Cargo Bay. =^= came the response.

Seeing Harv in passing, she smiled and nodded as she often had before everything had gone sideways. Taking the trays, she headed our into the corridors to go see the Captain.

Her attire was simple this evening. Black jeans and a turquoise silken material t shirt. She wore black boots and no makeup or jewelry. Her hair was pulled back in a simple ponytail.

“Huh… well cargo bay it is, then.” She headed to the location with the trays and palmed open the door. Once inside, she paused to see where the Captain was.

There was no sign of the Captain, but from far back in the hold came the sounds of music… some kind of stringed instrument.

Raye carefully set the trays down on a container and made her way around bay in silence. As she came in sight of him, she quietly crossed her arms before moving just to within his line of sigh to not startle him. She leaned back with a smile on her face and watched him.

He was seated on a folding stool, eyes closed, and was playing a cello. The case lay open on the deck with a soft towel and a bottle of some dark amber liquid by it, and the smell of resin and wood polish was in the air slightly.

As he played, he moved slightly in time to the music, and his fingers moved almost casually as the notes issued forth softly. After a moment, he slowed and stopped playing, and opened his eyes.

It was obvious she startled him, but he simply said “Ms. Anders. And what can I do for you this evening?” His tone was professional, not emotional. But his face went slightly rigid when he spoke, and he began packing the cello away.

She held her arms out to make him stop. “No, please. Don’t. I’ll go. And I’ll lock the door. I just brought you dinner. I’ll leave it on the crate by the door. I’m sorry intruded, but I’m privileged I got to hear it.” She slowly started to back off, a soft smile on her lips.

Raye

“Thank you, but that is unnecessary. I have already eaten. I’m just finally getting around to getting some things to my quarters. I do appreciate the thought, though.” He finished packing the instrument away and then stood it up, the wheels on the bottom siding in the movement.

“Do you want me to leave, then? Or perhaps I can help you with things?” She smiled softly and nodded to the crates around them. She hoped he wouldn’t just dismiss her.

Raye

He shook his head. “No thank you. I can manage. This is the last piece. The rest was already moved.” was all he said as folded up the stool and secured it to the hard case with a magnet.

She put her hands behind her and leaned on the crate behind her. “You didn’t answer my other question. Do you want me to leave you alone? I won’t lie, Alexander. I am hoping you don’t say yes.” She looked at him as he packed up.

Raye

He shook his head in a slightly dismissive, fashion and said “Well based on recent events, even if I did tell you to, you probably wouldn’t listen. And the last I checked, you aren’t a Lieutenant anymore, so giving you a direct order is a bit heavy handed, don’t you think?” and the case began rolling towards the door, Alex behind it. “And only my mother calls me Alexander, Ms. Anders.” and he walked past her towards the door.

She frowned slightly. “Sir…” the word was a bit overly formal. “If you tell me to go, I give you my word, I will. And I’ve always kept my word. Once I was told to stop, I did. So you are welcome to not like me for my inquisitive nature and desire to protect those I’ve come to care for. But never doubt my word, please.”

Raye

He stopped suddenly and turned and said “I did tell you to stop. To leave it alone. You didnt. You went to Harv and scared the poor man to death. You made him think he had been found and he was going to have to vanish all over again. That’s not leaving it alone, Ms. Anders. That’s placating your own conscious. So the next time I tell you to leave it alone? Leave it alone.” and he turned and resumed his movement towards the door.

Cochrane, CO

“Yes, Sir.” She moved to exit with him. As she got close to him, she touched his arm, dropping it almost immediately. “I care for you, Cochrane, Alex… I screwed up. I know I did. And I sleep and wake with that every day. And I always will. But it doesn’t change how I feel. If you tell me to stop bringing you dinner, I will. If you say to stop seeking you out when we are not on duty, I will.” She fought back the tears she feared shedding before him. “If you want me to give you more time, I will. Harv and I are square for now. And no, this time he came to me. But at least tell me what you want. Please.” Her voice cracked on the last word.

Raye

He stopped again and his jaw tightened as he said “I want to go to my quarters and get these things stored and cared for properly. That’s all I want right now, Ms. Anders. Good evening.” He began moving again and the door slid open and he took the long way to the far turbo lift.
