Calloway went back to her stew, which was now lukewarm, and listened while he talked. At the mention of friendship, she gave him something of a ‘really?’ look and took another bite. “Let’s just try the colleagues thing, first. Believe it or not, working with others is not an issue for me. I’m a scientist. I start out with the premise that I don’t know everything, and that means others might know more than me. So teamwork isn’t a problem. I can keep things professional if others do.”

Luke had to withhold laughing as she pulled a face at him, ok so maybe he was clutching at straws going as far as a friendship, “Colleagues first” He nodded as if making a mental note for their future. He spooned his stew before deciding he was full. “I’m glad we had this conversation Lieutenant. Do you mind if I called you something else? Lieutenant is so formal and I’m too old for formal all the time. It’s exhausting.” During his time in the war, rank didn’t matter past the amount of federations credits you were awarded. Most of the time you never survived long enough anyway, Luke was one of the lucky ones… or unluck depending on the way you looked at it.

She looked at him askance. “Old? You can’t be all that much older than me. I get living a hard life more than people know and feeling older, but I certainly hope we’re not approaching the natural end of our lives, because…” She shook her head, leaving the rest of her thoughts unsaid.

“Anyway… Faye’s my name. I suppose you could use it,” Calloway said dryly.

“Well, I guess its a feel old kind of case” He shrugged. “I’d say you don’t look a day over thirty, whereas I feel easy about eighty at a times… I suppose the Marines will do that to you with the crippling back pain, sore shins, and well the PTSD”. He sat back in his chair comfortably full from the food their conversation more relaxed than before when they were both like canines with their hackles up. “Was you always Starfleet science or is there a story behind the person that is ‘Faye’“

Faye didn’t feel old. For her it was different. But then again when you were effectively orphaned as a teenager and forced to survive on your own, age became a meaningless thing. Her expression had turned pensive, her oft-stormy eyes momentarily distant. “Everyone has a story,” she said softly before she shrugged. “I joined the science stream at the Academy because that’s where the bulk of my skills lay. I’ve been doing that in one form or another ever since.” He had dropped enough personal details that for other people that might spark more conversation. But Faye was cautious, especially with someone she so easily butted heads with. There was no way in hell he was getting her life story just because he wasn’t currently being annoying.

So she didn’t have much of an interesting background, or so she said but Luke knew there was more behind the woman however he wasn’t trying to annoy her again so accepted the small tidbit of information for what it was. “I didn’t think I’d ever join Starfleet,” He said in response to her answer. “I mean I knew I was going to be a Marine, I was active and with the whole dominion war thing it was that or Starfleet anyway but the Marines just felt right.” He shrugged, “And now look at me a security officer in gold.”
