With Lukes medical check-in fortunately complete there was only one other place that per Starfleet regulation required him to attend before being cleared for active service aboard a starship, that was the counselor’s office where he found himself now waiting having pushed the door chime to be granted access despite that he still had a list of people to see before he actually for to work and settled in.

The chief counselor was someone who Luke had been anxiously anticipating for a few reasons, one was because he was undergoing active counseling to curve his PTSD which he had suffered from ever since the dominion war and worst the death of his wife many years ago. Secondly, the counselor was a Bajeen, who possessed the unique ability to see ‘aural ghosts’, which apparently every life form released. He really didn’t need to see or know about his departed wife and wondered just how accurate these claims were.

When the doors parted, Dave was sitting at his desk reading on a PaDD. He set it aside as the Lt walked in. “Welcome, I’m Yeoman Brooks. I work with Counselor Rollo. I don’t actually have anyone scheduled for this time slot. Are you new to the Manhattan or are you having an issue at the moment?”

Luke nodded to the man in greeting before adding verbally, “Thank you, I’m Lieutenant Luke Wyatt I’ve just transferred here and was hoping to get my preliminary counseling session out the way, I was undergoing treatment and will need to discuss it with Lieutenant Commander.” He paused looking around, it didn;t seem busy. “Is it possible to have a brief meeting with her now to arrange something in the near future?” The Yeoman was just doing his job but this was always a sensitive area for Luke.

Working for Rollo was gravy, so when the doors opened, Dave became the epitome of the perfect assistant. He didn’t want to lose his place in that office. The Cmdr was always nice to him and she let him read as much as he wanted as long as all of his work was in order. “I’m sure the Counselor can see you now if need be.”

—Yeoman Dave Brooks (for Rollo)

“That would be greatly appreciated Yeoman, thankyou.” Replied the security officer thankful for the opportunity, the last thing he needed was a break in his treatment and going into remission… again. “I shall wait here until she is ready to see me.” Luke smiled again at the Yeoman and took a seat scrolling through his PaDD which had been loaded with his assignment, previous treatment plan, notes from Doctor Milligan his previous counselor and the information pack in regards to the Manhattan and the Delta Quadrant, the latter was what he found himself scrolling through.

Dave left his desk and went through the doors of an inner office. He reappeared a moment later and gave Wyatt a nod, then returned to his desk. The inner doors opened once again to reveal a very pale woman with stark white hair. “Lt Wyatt? Please come in. I’m Counselor Rollo and I understand you need a boarding evaluation and to discuss the need for future meetings?”

—Rollo, CNS

Standing he took the appearance of the woman in, very few things startled him but her pale white skin and even whiter hair made him feel cold. With the hairs on his arm standing up he smiled “Thankyou Counselor” He moved towards where she had just offered him entrance and entered the room. “Thank you for seeing me in such short notice as you might understand I wanted to get initial introductions out the way and settled in as soon as possible.” Explained the security officer again finding himself observing her, his initial thoughts of cold were still there but her voice was warm and inviting. Looking past her whiteness, her blue eyes were something of a complement and rather compelling, he did consider her overall as pretty. “I have brought with me my current psychological notes but you should be able to access them if you haven’t already from your system, I authorised their disclosure with yourself.”

  • Lieutenant JG Luke Wyatt

“I did notice them this morning when I came in. They are quite the read.” It wasn’t a malicious comment it just mean that they weren’t the run of the mill sort of file she received quite often. “Please, have a seat. I was just about to have a coffee, can I offer you anything?”

The security officer took the seat opposite her and sat down in it watching her before answering the question she presented him, “I’ll take a tea please, white with two sugars” He held up his index and middle finger indicate the number as well before putting his hands back in his lap while she left to fetch their drinks and perhaps some food, counselors often had sweets or some form of confectionary to help their patients.

Zef moved to the replicator and filled the order(s), then returned and sat opposite Wyatt. With the way the light hit him, she noticed how green his eyes were. Very nice, she thought. “I noted in your file that you had an ongoing commitment with your last counselor about working on your PTSD symptoms. How was that going?”

—Rollo, CNS

“That’s correct” he stated simply before going more in-depth, “It’s going well so far and I haven’t felt the need to drown myself in a bottle of whiskey or use an airlock whilst were at warp so it must be doing something. I still suffer from broken sleep and night terrors.” He shrugged, “But I usually exercise before sleeping so it at least helps me get to sleep.” He admitted, talking about his PTSD wasn’t what was difficult the cure however was.

Zef sipped at the hot coffee in her hands. “I’ll be happy to help you continue with the work you’ve been doing. How often were your visits with the last counselor?” He may have gotten into a routine on his last ship, but being assigned to a new one could cause a setback in the progress he’s already made. She would have to keep an eye out for that.

“We met on a weekly basis, but it wasn’t always a formal review those were monthly.” He said sipping on the tea, it wasn’t like the stuff back home but it was still something to remind him he had one. “We would often do recreational activities, running, walking, swimming, climbing that sort of stuff, or watch a movie and talk about how it was affecting me emotionally.” He shrugged, adjusting to a new method and a new counselor would be difficult.

“I saw that you also have a daughter. Is she here with you or somewhere else? Also, I didn’t note there was a Mrs Wyatt…?”

—Rollo, CNS

Luke hands turned white as he clutched the mug cutting off the blood to his fingertips, the left corner of his lip twitched before he managed to settle himself. “There was a Mrs Wyatt, she died not long after Abbey was born who is currently on Earth studying to become a civilian doctor.” He smiled at the thought of his daughter, he was very proud of how she turned out, raising a young girl alone was difficult especially in the marines which caused him to leave in the first place.

Either he was still in love with his deceased wife, or the circumstances of her death were violent. At least that’s the reaction she read from his body language. “I apologize if I’ve hit a nerve there, but the more I know about you, the better I can help you. “How did your wife die, Lt?” Zef thought it would be a difficult question for Wyatt to answer calmly, but it was necessary to test his reactions to certain emotional stimulus so she could prepare a workable treatment program that would be in his best interest.

—Rollo, CNS

Luke had anticipated the question even before coming into the room so after a long slow sip of this drink he closed his eyes to gain the last few bits of courage and then told her. “It was supposed to be a routine mission, go in undercover and expose an illegal Orion slave market.”He looked at her and nodded, “It was considered illegal because it wasn’t just woman they were selling but children, endangered species aswell as the arms dealing. Anyway some how our cover was blown and we were taken hostage their demands were way to steep and our Captain never dealt with criminals, he was a hard bloke.”

The security officer sipped his drink, recalling these particular details weren’t hard they were like a story. It’s the ending he couldn’t stomach. “Our captors soon realised this and began closing up shop and then the shooting happened. I’m not sure who shot who first but bodies dropped all around us either injured, dead or just fearing for their lives. We tried to make it to our shuttle but we got separated, by the time I turned around it was already to late, Lillian was suspended in the air and the Orion had his hands…” Luke began choking up, his hands were trying to find something do to either holding his mug or pulling at his collar which now seemed far too tight.

“Im sorry its just…” Luke closed his eyes and took in a deep breath.

“By the time I turned around his hands were around her neck, I won’t forget the sounds.” He blinked away his tears and carried on. “I had to be dragged back to the shuttle with a handful of others and by the time we went back her body was gone, we never even had the chance to say our goodbyes” Luke tears were unable to be blinked away so instead he just didn’t acknowledge them as he continued.

“The worst part was she had two months left before retiring, she was going to move back to Earth, to her family because we had been going through some… Marital issues raising a child in the marines, it want for everyone she was going to take Abbey too. Instead I retired, a single father who knew nothing about raising a child.” He downed the remainder of his tea and set the mug aside only now finally acknowledging his damp face as he wiped the away.

She was quiet while he gathered himself together. A small box of facial towelettes had appeared on the table between them when he wasn’t looking. When she suspected he was ready, Zef spoke. “I’m very sorry you had to experience a loss like that.” There was nothing she could do about it—it was in the past. But she could let him know she understood loss and that it was really, really, difficult for everyone who cared about the dead person.

“Are you alright to continue or do you need a break?” She could easily clear him for duty and reschedule another appointment for the following day.

—Rollo, CNS

He took a tissue and dabbed around his eyes before screwing the paper into a ball and keeping it in his hand. “No I can Continue or if you have enough for now and with my file you could contact me with a schedule I will be one of you easiest patients. Counselling had helped me get to here, I know it’s an ongoing issue but I’m making Improvements. He for the first time since sitting down finally looked to the counselors grey eyes and smiled, his non apparent eye contact wasn’t rudeness but a mannerism when recalling such events. He could never make eye contact, as if he felt guilty he had lived and she had died, survivors guilt they called it.

  • Lieutenant JG Luke Wyatt

She made a quick decision then. Since she’d already gotten him to open up and she wasn’t getting any ‘odd’ vibes from him, Zef decided to let the appointment slide and have him back the next day. Joining a new ship was more difficult for some than for others. You couldn’t measure everyone with the same yardstick. “Alright, why don’t we call it good for today, I’ll clear you for duty so you can get settled in and you can come back tomorrow so we can set up a schedule for future appointments?”

—Rollo, CNS

He nodded happy with the decision, “That sounds fine to me counsellor. Thankyou for seeing me in short notice again. I appreciate it” Luke smiled, probabaly the first genuine smile he had since entering the room. “Is there a particular time that works best for you tomorrow?” Luke knew no matter what time she suggest he would be available to attend.

  • Lieutenant JG Luke Wyatt

Zef stood and headed over to her desk. With the tap of a few buttons on the console, she brought up her calendar for the next day. “It looks like I’m open after 1300 hours. You can come by any time after that.” She turned to look at him again to see if that was agreeable.
