Faye didn’t feel old. For her it was different. But then again when you were effectively orphaned as a teenager and forced to survive on your own, age became a meaningless thing. Her expression had turned pensive, her oft-stormy eyes momentarily distant. “Everyone has a story,” she said softly before she shrugged. “I joined the science stream at the Academy because that’s where the bulk of my skills lay. I’ve been doing that in one form or another ever since.” He had dropped enough personal details that for other people that might spark more conversation. But Faye was cautious, especially with someone she so easily butted heads with. There was no way in hell he was getting her life story just because he wasn’t currently being annoying.

So she didn’t have much of an interesting background, or so she said but Luke knew there was more behind the woman however he wasn’t trying to annoy her again so accepted the small tidbit of information for what it was. “I didn’t think I’d ever join Starfleet,” He said in response to her answer. “I mean I knew I was going to be a Marine, I was active and with the whole dominion war thing it was that or Starfleet anyway but the Marines just felt right.” He shrugged, “And now look at me a security officer in gold.”

In normal conversation, there would be reciprocity. One person would speak, the other would listen to what they were saying and respond to it. The problem for Faye was that these openings he was giving her led down paths she had pretty much already decided were not open to him. Well, she supposed to could give in a bit. Carefully. Selectively.

It figured he was… had been a Marine. It actually made a lot of sense and filled in the gaps. And whether it was his personality or whatever training was drilled into the marine corps, Faye understood it to be perhaps a small part of the reason they butted heads so easily. As least she was unexpectedly consistent in that regard. “I certainly hadn’t planned on joining Starfleet. It was never one of those things as an adolescent that I went, ‘yep, I’m pinning all my hopes and dreams on this one thing’, and if I had…” She actually laughed slightly and shook her head. What a crazy life that would have been. And given the one she had led thus far, that was saying something.

Luke actually enjoyed seeing her laugh, even if it was only slightly. “Well, I can only wonder what you might have gotten up to if you had gone on with your hopes and dreams. Who knows maybe you still will.” He leaned back in his seat. “I suppose I should leave you in peace Lieutenant. I’m glad we had this conversation, the last time we met just didn’t sit well with me.” The security officer offered her a smile readying himself to leave.
