Alex reviewed the comments and reviewed the file. It made sense, but it was certainly distressing.

=^= Mr. Wyatt to the Ready Room immediately, please. =^= was all he said.

Cochrane, CO

Luke was eating lunch in the mess when the Captains voice broke the casual ambience that was the lower chatter from the other officers, clattering food carts and music. Finishing the mouthful of food he tapped his communications badge, =^= On my way sir. =^=

Picking up his tray and half finished plate of lasagne and pomegranate juice the security officer placed it all in the recycle and watched it disappear.

The walk to the Captains ready room was short and uneventful, pressing the door chime he checked himself over making sure his uniform was correctly pressed and clean whilst he waited for the acknowledgement to enter.

The door slid open and revealed the office inside.

The place was organized, but had the feel of both authority… and peace. Two bookcases on one wall stood with shelves lined with actual books behind their glass doors with brass fixtures and locks. Pictures had been mounted around the room showing both places and people, many of them featuring the same person. Various odds and ends graced places here and there. Displayed prominently, however, alone on a shelf high up on the wall directly behind the desk that sat opposite the door, was the lone figure of a gold Ox. Lighting had been directed so that it drew the eye of anyone who came through the door almost immediately.

The Captain looked up and said “Mr. Wyatt, thank you for coming so quickly. Please, have a seat.” and he indicated one of the two chairs in front of the desk.

The Security had scanned the room and took in his surrounding, in all honesty it was furnished in a way that Luke could appreciate. “Thankyou Captain.” Luke took the seat indicated by the senior officer and commanding officer.

“I have been reviewing your record. It is unique, to say the least. But that is a positive thing in your case.” He leaned back in his chair and looked at the man. “How have you enjoyed your time on the Manhattan? Are you happy here?” he asked calmly.

His face was distorted into a look of confusion, he wondered why the Captain had been reviewing his file. “Thankyou sir” He replied as he thought about his question. “I have settled in very well sir, the crew is most accommodating you have a good bunch here sir, the counsellor is also extremely helpful.” Luke gathered the Captain also knew about his on going counselling sessions.

Cochrane nodded. “Good. I’m glad to hear it. So I asked you here because I have an assignment for you. I have a short list if candidates, your name is at the top. It will take a great deal of your time and energy, and it will require absolute attention and dedication. Unfortunately, it will also mean that you step down as Assistant Security Chief. Knowing that, are you interested?” Cochrane asked. His voice was flat, serious, and his gaze intense.

The security officer couldn’t gauge what the Captain might have planned, but thinking back to his conversation with Faye and how sometimes you have to take opportunities as they come he finally nodded. “I guess if its something you have thought I would be good at then I would be doing myself and the crew an injustice but not at least giving it a go.” Luke waited eagerly to find out just what that was.

Cochrane looked at him for a long moment… and then grinned. “Good. So you are now the Manhattan’s Security Chief. And these…” and he reached into his desk and pulled out a small black box, “… belong to you now, Lieutenant.” He stressed the last word in such a fashion as to leave no doubt that with the new job came a new level of responsibility.

Luke hadn’t expected that at all, he had served his time for sure but most of that wasn’t on this ship nor was it even when he was within Starfleet as an officer none-the-less he didn’t doubt his own abilities. “Thank you, sir, for entrusting me with the role and I hope not to let you down.” Luke didn’t want to preempt the Captain giving him the box so he waited for the Captian to make a sign or to say for him to pick them up, Luke was a good officer and good officers followed orders.

Cochrane chuckled and said “Well? They aren’t going to leap out of the box on their own, Lieutenant.” and he slid the box closer. “Now… questions. What do you have? I’ll answer what I can.”

Cochrane, CO

He took the box and carefully took out the full gold pip, taking his black indented one from his collar he placed that in the empty slot which had been left behind and then placed the box back on the table for the Captain to as he pleased before putting the full gold one back in the place of his Junior Grade pip. “Well I mean,” Luke started “I suppose I do have questions in regards to Lieutenant Calloway sir. But I suspect that I won’t get them today.” His and her ongoing cat and mouse game hadn’t gone unnoticed and in fact, the Captain himself warned him the first time he came across the data analysis, but now surely as chief of security he would be privy to a little more information, or so he hoped.

Cochrane’s eyes flashed with amusement and he said “Go ahead and ask. That will at least let me know what you have figured out on your own.” and he chuckled.

Cochrane, CO

“Well I know she is a Data Analysis, her lab is never connected to the core and that she used several security measures to stop people going in there. She claims that was she is doing won’t harm the ship or the crew which I am sure you probably know because I doubt she’d still be doing it. So the bottom line upfront and the answer I’d like to know is what is she doing and who is she really working for.”
