Cochrane looked at Rollo, and his displeasure at the situation was more than evident. He was quiet a moment, but finally inclined his head to the Counselor and said “Fine.” and he looked at Marrov. “Your ship will remain where it is, Mr. Marrov. You can wait on it. Once Commander Rollo has her answer, I will contact you and we will… discuss… the options. Now if you dont mind…” and he motined again for the escort.
Kalig smiled and shrugged, as though accepting defeat “All right Captain, I’ll go back aboard.” His eyes turned to Zef “I do hope it doesn’t take too long.” He turned away without another word, allowing himself to be escorted back to the transporter room, and from there, the Kestra.
Zef watched him go—the hairs on the back of her neck raising with foreboding. “That was too easy.” She said to Cochrane. “I’ve never known him to give in like that.” She turned her gaze from the doors back to the Captain. “Something’s not right. He wouldn’t have come all this way just to claim me with some old law. He’s up to something, I’m sure of it. But I don’t know if it really has anything to do with me, or if this is all just a cover for why he’s really in the Delta quadrant.”
White brows raised as if asking what Cochrane thought.
“I’ll send a message to Ganro immediately. The quicker this is settled, the better off we’ll all be.”
“Agreed.” Cochrane replied. “And when you speak to your contact, I would like to onow immediately, Counselor.” and he paused for a long moment, looking at her. “I know I made a brash assumption in the conversation with your brother-in-law, so I really should ask you. Do you want to return with him, or do you wish to remain on the Manhattan?”
“I want to remain on the Manhattan. Kalig isn’t family and I don’t have any kind feelings for him like I do for some people here on the ship. I honestly don’t know what will happen if the law he mentioned is real. Decisions will have to be made then but I don’t want to entertain the possibilities unless I have to.” She shrugged. “I know that’s not the intelligent way to deal with the situation, but right now I’m experiencing all of this with my heart and not my brain.”
Cochrane looked at her for a long time and finally noddd. “Go send your message, and then get some rest Counselor. You need perspective here, and I get the impression that Mr. Marrov is not only after you, but also any other angle he can get. So we need to be on our toes, as it were.”
She resisted the urge to reach out and squeeze his hand. It would have been for her own good, not his, but still—she didn’t want to cross any boundaries he wasn’t comfortable with. He’d told her in no uncertain terms that he only wanted to be friends and to her, friends were a rare commodity right now. “Thank you, Captain. I’ll go and compose a communique as soon as I get to my quarters.”
She stood and brushed her pale hands down the front of her uniform. “Once again, I’m sorry for this inconvenience.”
Cochrane took a deep breath and said “There will be enough time for apologies once this is over. Until then, let’s just focus on getting it handled, shall we?” and he gestured to the door.
