Shara watched as the CMO exited, stepping out of the woman’s way. Everything about Wynter’s demeanour told her everything she needed to know. Shifting her gaze to Pretha, Shara allowed a small fraction of her feelings to show through the mask: concern. “Just… keep an eye on her, alright?

Commander Calloway stepped back again and leaned herself up against the opposite wall. “I’ll just wait for the Captain. He said he’d be down soon enough.”

Inside the brig, Faye moved back and forth across the length of her holding cell. To most it would probably seem like she was pacing, and there was a bit of that. But to the observant eye, her steps were perfectly measured and the focus on the woman’s face seem to be calculating something as she reached one end, spun carefully and walked back the other way.

It was very close: the spacing between this cell and the other one were near dead on. This one just a fraction bigger, but also wider because there was the bench that served as a bed. Her other one had had no such luxury. Her right hand hung down at her side as she moved, the trembling sometimes moving towards tapping against her thigh.

Pretha nodded respectfully at the woman. “Then I’m sure he’ll be here soon. You’ll forgive me, but I need to close the door. It’s certainly nothing personal, ma’am.” She nodded once more and closed the door.

Turning around, she looked at Faye. Watching her only a moment was all she needed to see this wasn’t boredom pacing. It was stalking. The measured pace along with the look she had at the doorway was evident of that. Pretha stepped closer to the cell. “Are you all right? I can’t discuss what occurred, but I need to make sure you’re ok or the Captain will have my head.” She smiled, trying to make light of it and hopefully ease the woman’s tension.

Calloway cast her glare halfway at Oberon as she continued to walk the space. “All right?” Faye laughed bitterly. “Yeah, sure, just peachy! And just to make my life even more interesting, my mother is here. Did you know I haven’t seen her in twenty-five years? As far as I knew, she was possibly dead. Funny that she shows up now, just in time to watch me fall about as far as I can go at the moment.” She had to force herself to breathe, though admittedly, deeper ones were more difficult at the moment.

Pretha glanced at the closed door and frowned. Turning back to Faye, she shook her head. “Don’t think about her right now.” She held her hand up knowing the protest was coming. “I know… I know… easier said than done when she’s mere yards from you. But seriously, you need to calm down. The Captain will be here soon. I can’t discuss what happened, but I can tell you I have heard he is a fair man. I can’t say how he will react to having been ‘shot’ but know that from his reputation, I doubt he’ll let your mother interfere.” She tried to smile in reassurance, “Regardless of her rank. Talk to me to get your mind out of the spiral I can see it’s in. I just arrived on the ship. Are there any good holo programs or desserts in the replicators I should keep an eye out for? I admit I am horribly addicted to chocolate.” She was trying to distract the woman without crossing a professional line. But it seemed more beneficial to risk getting in trouble for talking to her, than to leave her stewing and panic stricken, drowning in her own mind into a panic attack.

Faye mentally counted steps through each pass of the cell , but Pretha’s inquiry slipped through the mental noise and she found her breaths evening. “If you want good food, try the Officer’s Mess. Harv make a mean stew. The proper kind- cooking long and slow so the flavour is rich. It tastes like…” She almost said home. But which homes was that? Her original home didn’t exist and her current one, well, she was hanging on to that b her fingernails at this point.

“I don’t do the holodeck much,” Calloway continued as she paced. The motion helped keep the anxiety at bay actually and she didn’t dare stop for the time being. “But I’m building a garden in the science flex space on Deck Four. That’s what I do with what little downtime I have. It’s pretty much ready for planting too. I started a whole bunch of stuff by seed and it’ll be great to see how it all fills in.” Would she even be around to see that? Regardless, she still felt like the garden was important, even if she was no longer around to see it in all its glory.

Pretha nodded. “I’ll remember the stew. Good food is hard to come by out here.” She laughed slightly before stepping back and settling on the stool. “As to the garden, I’ll see that it’s tended. I don’t think that’s against regulations to offer.” She smiled but it was more in reassurance. “I’m sure you’ll see it again, too.” It wasn’t something she could promise honestly, but she could give the woman something to maybe look forward to.

Her tiny nod carried no confidence. “The seedlings in Bioscience Lab 2 will need watering, though it’s mostly automated,” Faye said, stepping slowly still. Gaze distant, the walls seemed to blur but she knew how many steps it was now and she didn’t need to see where she was going.

Abruptly she stopped and snapped her fingers, her stormy eyes lit up with realization. “A rill! We need a rill. Why didn’t I think of that before?” A deep breath in and a slow exhale. As her mind worked Calloway allowed her to sit on the edge of the bench, hands curled over the edge. She didn’t direct her gaze at Pretha precisely, but her conversational tone certainly didn’t exclude the security officer. “We have the water feature which is basically a small waterfall into a pond, but we could create the rill to extend underneath the first path and though the next large bed. Maybe I can move the larger tree there and then we can plant some marginal plants and trees there.” She could picture it in her mind and it sure was pretty.

Now that her mind was on something else, Pretha hoped to keep it there. “That sounds great. So what would you need and how would you do it?” She settled more comfortably on her stool as Faye sat down. She was nervous with the woman pacing.

Faye’s ability to mentally work through a problem in seconds had annoyed every roommate she had ever had at the Academy. They had seen it as some sort of oneupmanship , but that couldn’t have been farther from the truth. “There are two basic ways to do so in an artificial environment. You can attempt to simulate a natural stream, including the rock bed and the ecology of the bank, or you can create an obviously artificial channel in a decorative way that funnels the water from its source to the destination. Both are perfectly valid, it just depends on what aesthetic you’re going for.”

For the moment she could pretend that this was just a normal everyday conversation between two people, though her mind was all too aware of who might still be outside the doors and the people she expected to come in soon. Again, what some would read as coldness towards her own actions, callousness even, was really just a protective measure to keep herself in the present. Pretha, whether she had fully realized it yet or not, had granted her something Faye rarely expected: mercy.
