Shara has begun to unnerve the two security guards outside the brig after awhile, which of course she noticed. And even when Oberon reappeared and delivered her message, she maintained her stoicism. She was fine about coming back tomorrow because this wasn’t about her. This was about Faye and her worry that this would be ten times worse than anyone expected for reasons they did not fully comprehend. It was a disaster in the making and Faye chose it herself.

Gazing at Pretha, she nodded, but something in her features shifted. What could she say without breaking her daughter’s privacy (never mind that she was in the brig)? “That’s fine. I’ll come back. Just…” A deep inhale steadied her. “keep an eye on her,” she said softly, repeating her earlier warning. If anyone would even see it as that. As her caring.

Pretha nodded, her face going a bit softer on the edges. “I will ma’am. I promise.” The words were meant to be truly comforting rather than mere lip service of yeah, yeah, now go away. She met the Commander’s eyes for a moment longer, nodded once more then headed inside, letting the door shut behind her.

A simple nod was her only reply but it was the only one necessary. Spinning on her heel, Shara left, heading for the guest quarters that were hers until this whole thing was solved and she was sent off to deal with the next part of her assignment.

Stepping back to her desk in the middle of the room, though still facing Faye, she smiled. “She cares, you know.” She wouldn’t pry or even say more, unless Faye asked. She just had the feeling the Commander didn’t do that often. So she wanted to be sure the message was received. Though how Faye received it or reacted, was a completely different story.

Faye had shifted to the floor, sitting cross legged, having gotten tired of pacing and of sitting on the bench. There were only so many things she could do within those twelve paces after all. Looking at Pretha, Calloway snorted. “Does she now,” she said bitterly. “Would have been nice to have known that at some point before now. What exactly did she say?” Sure, she was curious, but only because that woman was a complete unknown to her and she had tossed some cryptic things at Faye in the ready room she was still trying to sort out.

Pretha shook her head. “It’s not so much what she said, as how she said it. She sounded,” she paused thinking of the word, “helpless. Or perhaps lost. She asked me to look out for you. Keep an eye on you were her exact words. But she said it as if pleading with me to watch over you. I can’t comment on the past. Some people aren’t cut out to be mothers. But that doesn’t mean they don’t love you. Or at least care on some level.”

She wasn’t in a position to lecture Faye on parental feelings. But she hoped the woman would at least know that her mom, deep down at least, had feelings.
