Mark stood in the turbolift, fingering the new pip on his collar. He almost - but not quite - felt like he was back reporting for his first ship assignment. After years serving on his first ship, Mark was now reporting for his second ship assignment of his Starfleet career. And not just any new ship assignment - but with a promotion to lieutenant and being assigned as Chief Engineer of his new ship.

He had spent the last few weeks getting caught up to speed on the Memorial’s specs. The ship was large - and Mark was responsible for the entire ship working - but he felt up for the challenge. He was certainly more confident than he was a few years ago, and Mark knew he was ready for the challenge Starfleet had given him. Being in charge of a department of officers was new for him - but he had run his prior engineering department on a few occasions on a temporary basis, and this shouldn’t be too different… other than the entire department would be strangers to him. His sister would probably be laughing at him if she knew what he was thinking about - she always poked fun at him for having his head in his devices without much care for other people. But, clearly he had managed to convince someone somewhere that he was good with other people - otherwise, he wouldn’t have received this assignment.

The turbolift doors opened while he was still grinning at his sister’s thoughts and absent-mindedly touching his new pip. Shaking his head slightly, he regained his composure by straightening his uniform and walking onto the bridge.

Mark walked over to the ready room doors, pushed the chime button, and waited.
