Wendell was in his chemistry lab late at night. Officially, this was a General Science on deck 12. At least, that’s what the ships specifications said it was. But Wendell had modified it to be a state the art chemistry lab.

All sorts of equipment was set up here. It was where he brewed his elixirs. He was adjusting the settings of some of the vats.

Karina was wondering the ship, it was late and it was a habit of hers when she couldn’t sleep to walk the ship. Tonight it was because the ship sounded different, it felt different and she hadn’t adjusted to it. It had always been the same for every ship she was on. It took her a few days for the ambient sounds and vibrations of the ship to become common place so that she wasn’t constantly wondering what that ‘sound’ was. She had stopped on Deck 12 and meandered the corridors. An interesting smell caught her attention and she stopped. Ah a chemistry lab. She approached the door, and it was unlocked so she stepped in to see what the science officers were working on. Chemistry, though not her area of knowledge always led to interesting results.

Just one science officer was in the lab. He was busy tinkering with the machine that ran along the back wall. Pipes of glass and copper led to and from glass beakers to copper vats.

He noticed the officer who entered the lab. “Hello,” he said.

“Good evening, Lt. Cmdr. I hope I’m not intruding. I got a hint of an interesting aroma coming from the lab and was curious.” Karina stepped further into the lab to allow the doors to close, but not so far in as to get in the way of the working scientist. “May I inquire as to what it is?”
