BJ hadn’t had an opportunity to meet the new first officer. “Welcome to the party. We’re still analyzing the data from the probe. And we have our engineers attempting to see what makes it tick.”

Janzen

Karina nodded, “Cmdr Janzen. Perhaps we can step back and get a better view of the message?” “Computer begin interface with UT and see if we can’t find out what the message is.” It was a good chance that message might tell them what this thing was.

OOC: I did edit my previous post to say ‘wasn’t meant’ rather than ‘was’. That was a typo.
IC:
As Sinclair pushed down on the hatch, there was an audible click and it popped open, the hatch lifted above the opening a bit.

Inside, the inner sphere was hollow, though by the interior dimensions, it was clear the shell of the sphere was quite thick. Inside the curved interior, an orange substance of some kind rested. But at the introduction of the refreshed atmosphere, the substance moved slightly, but barely. Enough that Sinclair might think he was imagining things.

Karina was back far enough to not be able to see in but was only slightly relieved to see no ‘dust’ shoot out.

” I doubt that the UT will work on any pre-recorded greeting message,” Wendell remarked. “There simply isn’t any brain pattern for it to lock onto.”

CSO

“Perhaps not Lt., but this did come from the delta quadrant and it is possible that the language is one we have encountered and already have programmed. Cmdr Janzen, you excelled in all of your science courses if I remember correctly and you’ve been to the Delta quadrant. Perhaps you could put your experience and knowledge to helping the computer translate that message.” Karina wasn’t one to normally give orders to a DHs staff, but there were far too many people standing around waiting for something to do.

BJ had been to the Delta Quadrant once. He hadn’t studied any of the languages however. That was one thing he was not good at doing. “I had been once before Cmdr. But, I haven’t studied the languages of the region. I’ll do my best, but I can’t promise you anything.”

Well, that wasn’t quite expected, Mark thought to himself. What is it?

“I have something here, but I have no idea what yet.” Mark said aloud. “I could use a second look.”

Mark scooted over a bit to allow a second person to see the interior of the inner sphere, and pulled out his tricorder again to start scanning the substance. He thought he saw something move for a moment, but it was probably his eye distracted by a light on his tricorder. Was the substance the cargo of the sphere? Some type of unknown mechanism or power source? His curiosity began to increase as he looked at his scans.

-Lt. (j.g.) Mark Sinclair, CE

“Ehh, just a moment there, Lt,” Wendell said. “Let me at it. A probe like this should be in a museum. You know, some of Earth’s original probes had these ‘Golden Records’ in them. They had a wealth of information about Earth.”

CSO

Karina waited for Sinclair and Vaughn to report on their scans of the interior. A record of a planets history and knowledge? Such a find was invaluable, if that’s what it was. And made her request to Jenzen all the more important. If they couldn’t translate the language all that information would be for naught.

While the sphere itself and the language of the message it contained were unfamiliar and not on record, Sinclair’s reading did show something familiar and of interest: the substance inside the sphere contained a morphogenic matrix.

But before anyone could do anything further, the substance shifted again and shot upwards, seemingly of it’s own volition. Before their eyes it turned to steam and flowed through the forcefield, unperturbed by the attempt at containment. Upwards it rose to the shuttlebay ceiling, floating along until it found a ventilation vent and slipped through, disappearing from view.
