Almost as soon as the door chimed a voice called “Enter”. The office was slightly decorated. A shelf containing some physical books on various alien anatomy as well as a few musical theory paperbacks. The desk itself had only the basic computer and a few PaDDs as well as a cup of what looked like tea. The man sitting behind the desk seemed to be in his thirties. His dirty blond hair was short and well-groomed, his eyes a faded blue.

Karina walked in and took in the chief medical officer. “Dr. Grey, it is a pleasure to meet you,” came her steady paced voice. “I am Karina Enger, the new XO. Do you have a moment? If not I am happy to come back later.”
Lt Cmdr Enger, XOJack looked up from his computer and looked at the commander for a few seconds before tapping his console once more “Please have a seat Commander, I have some time” He said in a polite tone, if a little dry.

Karina moved to the chair opposite the CMO, “Thank you doctor.” Of course he could just be saying that because he felt he had to, but her offer to return later had been genuine. “I’ll get right to the point, Doctor. The purpose of your department is obvious: to heal our wounds and cure our illnesses. But often is the case that there are hidden gems within departments, either in people or in the combined skills of the whole. For example you might have an expert on prosthetics in your department that would be better suited to fixing a robotic tool than a member of engineering would. Or perhaps you run your own specific and targeted drills for your teams on what to do if we get boarded, and that practice makes your department a logical fall back to take command. What I want to know, is how do you feel your department is best utilized? I might be responsible for delegating out the captains orders, but you know your people better than I do. I rely on your judgement to make those decisions.”
Lt Cmdr Enger, XOJack stared at the first officer with a neutral emotionless expression as she spoke. After she had finished he took a moment to consider “I’m not aware that any of the Medical staff besides me have any prior experience or knowledge outside their respective fields. I am a former Science department head, outside of my medical doctorate I have one in Xenobiology and another in Quantum physics.” He explained slowly “Regarding if the ship is boarded Sickbay is not a viable place to fall back to, engineering would be a far better location. However, due to the ship class odd design and with the bridge being a deck lower, it may change things. If you want I can schedule some drill with Security Chief Zero, examine how my staff can handle such an attack”.

Karina filed his expertise away and then shook her head, “No Lt. that was merely an example. Now if you want to run such drills outside of the standard you are welcome to, but I do not require that you do so.” Karina took the time to consider her words. Had there been a better way to express her thoughts? That was always the problem. Her people communicated so efficiently and quickly with thoughts formed as intricate images, sounds, smells, feelings. Some times she found finding the words to vocalize her thoughts difficult even having been speaking since she was very young. “Tell me Lt what can I do for you as your XO? You are the expert in your field, your department, I have no desire to micromanage you.”
Lt Cmdr Enger, XOJack blinked three times as he observed the commanders face with more curiosity on his face “As of right now there is nothing I need” His voice maintained its calm neutral tone “Unlike most other departments, Medical doesn’t have a function for the ship, what I mean is Engineering keeps the ship together, Security keeps the ship safe and science keeps the ship informed. We keep the other departments functioning. During emergency situations, I have several teams on standby to respond to medical emergencies whilst leaving sickbay fully operational. However, when it comes to your duties as first officer I don’t believe there is anything specific we or I require” He explained. It was as if he’d just realized there was a communication barrier between the two of them.

Karina contemplated him a moment. “I prefer open and honest communication with the senior staff Doctor. Even a preference for bluntness to those capable of giving it. So I will tell you bluntly, you have impressive performance evaluations and I have no doubt of your ability to take care of your department. If you find you need something or are unable to carry out your orders, no matter the reason,” and here she meant literally no matter the reason, whether it be ethics, supplies, personnel, a lack of knowledge in a given area, what ever it was, “I expect you to tell me, without hesitation.” She stood, “Thank you for taking the time to meet with me, Doctor. I will leave you to your work. My door is always open, as they say.”
Lt Cmdr Enger, XOJack nodded “Thank you, commander, I personally prefer bluntness over niceties. I have never developed what others would call a good bedside manner, I prefer calling things as they are.” he paused for a moment “I would like to speak with you for a moment if you have the time.” He started “I know that the Cairn species in generally unfamiliar or uncomfortable with speaking with words, would it be beneficial to you to speak with me mentally over vocally?” He asked, he seemed to be serious in his question.
Dr. Grey - CMO
“Of course doctor.” Karina resumed her seat as she contemplated his offer. “Though I appreciate your offer I do not think it would be wise. Even other telepaths have…difficulty coping with our method of telepathy, unless trained. It would irresponsible of me to attempt such a thing with a non-telepath. Though I understand that some humans have been known to posses telepathy. For now vocal communication will be just fine. Though I can understand the scientific appeal of investigating the possibility.”
“What would you like to discuss, doctor?” She waved a hand towards him inviting his request.
