Having completed her medical evaluation, Karina made her way down the corridor towards the office of the ship’s counselor. She was interested to see if there was an actual department or if Lt s’Tei worked alone. It depended on the ship, and just not size, but the type of assignments the ship was given. She found the office easily enough. Karina did not always understand, right away, clichés. Often having to analyze the literal and move to the abstract. Her years of service with Star Fleet and being around members of the Federation because of her father’s work she didn’t have that problem much anymore. Every once in awhile though one would surprise her. ‘Who counsels the counselor’ was one such axiom that she pondered a lot. After hearing the deepest and most horrible and then the most petty as well, Karina often marveled at the mental fortitude of those who served as ship’s counselors. She pressed the chime on the office and waited.
Lt Cmdr Enger, XO

Katron sat comfortably at her desk reviewing her appointments scheduled for the day on her PADD and suddenly heard the chime inside of the office. It was her first client as the new counselor of the U.S.S. Memorial. They had already arrived, time seemed to be quickly soaring by this morning for Katron. Her sapphire colored eyes scanned the appointment list, the first appointment of the day was with the ship’s Executive Officer, Lieutenant Commander Karina Enger.

She stood up at her desk and walked towards the replicator, “Come in.” As the doors swished open, she looked over Karina and provided her with a polite smile, “Hello Commander Enger, I am Lieutenant s’Tei. It is a pleasure to meet you sir. Before we get started, can I offer you a beverage or a meal? Or both perhaps?” She arched an eyebrow in curiosity in regards to what Karina’s choice might be this morning.

Karina smiled politely. “Hello Lt s’Tei. A dragon fruit slushy.” She grinned it was a bright pink with small black dots in it with lots of crushed ice. It tasted heavenly and was a slightly child like drink, but she loved it. And if she couldn’t be herself with the counselor then who could she be herself with? Hmmm....someone came to mind, but that was a topic for later. “I’ve come to welcome you to Memorial and to get my yearly evaluation complete. I don’t like leaving things till the last minute. But if you need more time to arrange yourself and your own onboardings I am happy to come back at a later time.”
Enger, XO

Katron returned a smile in the direction of her new executive officer. She had no idea what a dragon fruit slushy was but was about to try one for herself, “Computer, two dragon fruit slushy’s .” Katrone glanced at the drinks and it reminded her of when she was a little girl during the warm months on Romulus. Her parents would take her out for drinks similar to this one in appearance, but would it taste similar? She definitely missed her parents ever since they passed away in the destruction of her homeworld. In fact, she is still in therapy recovering from that awful experience and is working through the issue with a colleague who is renowned in the counseling field.

Katron turned, met Karina’s gaze, and gestured to the chair across from her desk, “I am sorry Commander, this is my first day, and have not decorated my office just yet. My desk will have to do for today. However, who says that you just have to come see a counselor yearly?” She raised an eyebrow, “There is nothing wrong with appointments throughout the year to catch up and process your various experiences.”

Karina waved a hand dismissively. “It is of no…matter. I would rather you enjoy the space than rush to…accommodate. I must admit I find your profession fascinating. On Vair we do not have…I do not mean insult, we do not hide our feelings and problems. They are there for all to see and assist with. I admit I do not understand why most of my collogues dislike these sessions. I find them refreshing. As for more appointments I am eager....yes eager to participate. However the last counselor left us before I could complete my yearly review. Star Fleet does love it’s paper work.”

She set Karina’s drink on the desk and then subsequently did the same with her beverage and sat down in her own chair, “So Karina, please tell me about your career in Starfleet thus far. What have you accomplished and what are your aspirations for the future?” She took a sip of her dragon fruit slushy and loved the taste, “Excellent choice in the slushy as well, yum.”

“I discovered this during my academy days. I find it very refreshing.” She picked up the glass and took a long sip. “My career, as you will see in my file, as been much redacted. I enjoy my work and serving the Federation. I was one of the first on my world to enroll in the Academy and join Star Fleet after we became a member world. As for my aspirations I enjoy tactical work. I would not say I ‘enjoy’ command, but I am drawn to it and feel I excel. But there are difficult choices that command officers must make that curb one’s excitement over the postings.”
Enger, XO

Katron continued to quench her thirst as she enjoyed her new type of drink before setting her glass down on the desk. Her emerald green eyes made direct eye contact with Lieutenant Commander Engers while she answered her initial question. She nodded her head from time to time and leaned forward slightly in an effort to indicate that she was both interested in what Engers had to say and also to make an effort to show through her facial expressions that she was genuinely concerned for her client. After Engers finished speaking, Katron smiled at her, “I can only imagine how arduous command can be. As you are not only responsible for the well-being of the entire crew, but your decisions are quite impactful in several different aspects depending on the situation that you find yourself involved with at the time.”

Katron took a swig of her slushy and added, “This is a lovely drink, thank you for the recommendation. I will definitely add this to my hot list on the replicator.” She set her glass back down and leaned back in her chair for comfort feeling her back against the soft cushion, “Now, do you plan on progressing further in your career? Perhaps rising to the rank of Commander? What are your career aspirations from here?” Curiosity was written all over her face and she definitely looked forward to hearing her executive officer’s response.
