Jhalae woke up early around 0515 hours, went to the holodeck, and completed a rock-climbing simulation before going to the lounge for a cup of Orion tea and Uttaberry crêpe.
Afterward, she went back to her quarters, showered, then had a silent debate in her mind on whether she should wear her pant or dress uniform. Since the imagined it was going to be a slow day, she settled on the dress uniform. After whipping her hair in a high neat bun, she hopped on the nearest turbo-lift. Initially, she headed for deck 14 to begin her engineering duties, however, she changed her mind and decided to stop by the Counselor’s office instead. When she reached her suite she, stood there, then turned to leave before she turned back ranged the chime.

From inside the room the sound of a short half yip half bark could be heard followed by a shhhing. “Come in!” A voice called from inside.

As Jhalae walked in she searched for the dog a moment before saying, “Welcome to the memorial.” She rubbed her right hand up and down her left arm. “It’s good to have a counselor onboard, hopefully I haven’t caught you at a bad time. I was hoping to get a chance to speak with you. My transition on this ship hasn’t been ideal and I am struggling with being so far away from my mother. I didn’t think it would be an issue but it is.”

There was no dog, but a small black fox walked along the bookcase and dropped onto a cushion before the counsellors desk. He sat watching. Paige for her part raised her eyebrows. “Thank you, that’s very kind. Not a bad time no…” she listened.

She paused not sure if she was comfortable about sharing her next issue, the real reasonshe was there. “I have also been having reoccurring dreams about…um..I guess an alternate version of myself? I mean she looks like me but I know she is not me even though we share the same visions and thoughts in my dream. It’s like I am her or she is me, in a different time and universe. I think I am, maybe I am being affected by something on the ship. What do you think?”

“Ok. Let’s…sit and we can talk about that.” She indicated the squashy chairs and sofa seating arrangement around the coffee table. “Im Paige. He’s Maddox. He won’t bother us if you’re concerned.” She said nodding her head at the fox.

“Oh a fox!” Said Jhalae surprised. “I have never seen a real one and I don’t much about them, however I will take your word that he is friendly.”
She didn’t ask to pet Maddox even though she wanted to, instead she sat on the sofa on looked at the woman. “I know all this must sound crazy. Just so you know I have no family history of delusions or anything of that sort. Also this other woman only appears in my dreams, I don’t see her in my waking hours so my situation is not interfering with my work.” She quickly shared this information because she was concerned about the possibility of the counselor thinking she may not be fit for duty.

Paige smiled. “You can pay him if you’d like.” She said as if she had read the engineers mind. “I can call him over, and I don’t like to use the word crazy. How about we start with the transition things, tell me about your last post and your time here? Can I get you something to drink while we chat?”

Jhalae nodded and said, “I would like that. Where in the universe did you find a fox?.”

She thought about the transition question and said, “Honestly I haven’t really found my place on the ship. Meaning I haven’t developed any meaningful friendships That bothers me because I am social and connections are important to me. It may be from a lack of trying on my part. I joined right in the middle of a mission and there was no time for formalities. Before I was stationed here I worked on Starbase 199, repairing and doing regular maintenance on starships that stopped through. I had a very solid social network there, so transitioning here where my social life is non-existent has been a challenge for me.”
