“Homework is better.” Truth was, she wasn’t comfortable with coming in and performing like a trained monkey. Bette rto do that on her own time. Especially since she would have to spend a while getting back in drawing shape. It had been a long time, and she’d likely regressed, adn it would take a little bit to get comfortable and back in the neighborhood of where she used to be.

Nodding Paige made a note. Her mismatched eyes looked up at Beckett for a moment “I can imagine that would be better especially if you haven’t drawn in a while, but I want to be clear, if you so choose to share any of your art work it won’t be a judgement thing. I’d more want to hear about the piece itself, why you drew it and picked the medium you did or what you felt about it afterwards. Even if that’s an I dunno. Are you comfortable enough with that?”

She considered for a moment then nodded, though her gaze fell. Not having to worry about critique was good, though knowing the way she was, she’d probably do that all on her own. “Yeah, I’m good with that,” she said quietly, shifting a little and picking at a couple things on the black part of her uniform.

Paige noticed the slight change in body language. “Great. Well as far as that goes, I’ll let you decide when you’re ready to give it a go and when you feel like sharing, if you do, book an appointment and we can chat about it.”

She pondered the PaDD a moment then put it back in the side of her seat and reached out for one of the small rakes to play with the sand in the coffee table come zen garden. “So tell me, what’s the memorial like?”

Maria nodded and crossed right leg over left, bouncing her foot lightl, hands resting in her lap. “Well, it’s a big ship. But it’s a warship. Not as comfortable as the mythology class, though it has a fairly high standard of living, compared to say being on a brazen-class.” She shrugged. “As for the crew it’s pretty quiet. I think most people are focused on the job. It… boring. Which is good, that means everything is going to plan. Until it’s not. At least it’s been quiet since I came on.”

Paige smiled. “Well that sounds both amazing and very frustrating.” She gave a grin then went back to the sand.

“How would you rate your stress levels on a scale of 1-5” she asked.

“Well, if one is ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ and the five is ‘Help there’s an elephant sitting on my chest and I can’t breathe…’ - Professionally, 2. Personal life… 2. Satisfaction? Dunno, probably about the same,” she mused.

Paige nodded. “So here’s the kicker question. What do you need for me to do to?” She asked.

She paused for a moment, considering, turning it over in her head. “That, I do not know. I guess I have some soul-searching to do,” she murmured. That wasn’t great. It didn’t help with the rudderless feeling. There was no particular direction to go. Was there anything worthwhile? Why did she even join Starfleet in the first place and go through four years at the Academy? Why did she even get into this venture in the first place? What did she hope to gain? .... Or was she just running?

Slowly she shook her head, not really looking at anything.

Paige let her sit a moment. “Maybe, but it is possible to do too much soul searching. While being reflective is a great opportunity for growth there are other ways. You mentioned feeling like you hadn’t managed to make many connections, maybe you could take today as an indication that you have made at least one?” She smiled.

Lieutenant Beckett nodded. “I’d like to. But professional obligation is not the same. And I suppose part of that is also the issue on my end.” Realizing how that might sound, she pushed on after a slight pause. “Part of my job is building rapport. Connecting with subordinates. But it’s just manipulation. To get them to perform better. Be better security officers. Then there’s building rapport with suspects. And subjects for developing intelligence. Assets, if you will. Things that get you closer to your objectives, or ones that you can turn to work for you, do what you want. Or get the right people to talk, or to flip.”

“Even in your case. Your job is building trust, building rapport to provide a voice of calm, reason, and insight to guide the actions of others. Which is, well.. manipulation. That word has an in-set negative connotation, of course. But the point is that if that connection is built for work… how real is it?” She shook her head. “And if I go out to try to ‘make friends’ with people, then it’s just satisfying another objective. Is it not?”
